Dark brunette hair has the added advantage of looking glossy by nature, as it reflects light, but giving it a color refresh can be tricky due to its pigmented strands. Thankfully, this season's most elegant hair trends are kind to dark, chocolatey hues, offering a way to bring light and dimension without extensive lightening. Ahead, the four easiest ways to embrace your brunette for spring.

Sunny Bronze

Keep it bright, not brassy, with a light bronze tone. “It's a beautifully rich, dimensional shade that sits between copper and chocolate brown,” says Hershesons ' colorist James Samuel, who recommends it for warmer complexions looking to enhance depth and warmth. Make sure the color stays extra glossy. “Like a sun-warmed brunette that catches the light in a really natural, flattering way.”

Flecked Brunette

Not all cocoa tones have to be warm, as a cooler hue can be softer and more complementary on those with cool undertones. “I’m really into cooler brunettes with what I call ‘flecks’ - tiny, almost imperceptible pieces of deep, mink-toned blonde running through the hair,” shares Samuel. “It’s not about traditional highlights or anything stripy; it’s much softer and more diffused. I use ultra-fine, scattered highlights and finish with an ash-blonde gloss to create that seamless, light-catching effect.”

Caramel Delight

A sunkissed shade will always feel right for brighter weather, and adds dimension to brunette hair without having to commit to a full-on transformation. “I love introducing soft, sun-kissed ribbons of caramel, honey, or toffee through the mid-lengths and ends. It lifts the color and reflects the light beautifully, giving brunettes that fresh, effortless glow,” says hairstylist Hadley Yates of Hadley Yates salon . Experimenting with natural-looking extensions is also a great way to refresh your color. Yates' Curated range looks like your hair, but better, and is available in a myriad of hues.

We've seen various iterations of this trend in the past, but for this season, the red hue is significantly more understated. “It sits right between a deep chocolate brown and near-black, with just a hint of red running through it,” says Samuel. “The red isn’t obvious, but it gives the hair this incredible richness and dimension, especially in natural light.” Consider this the grown-up take on last year's cherry red trend.
