A Soft Wavy Bob Is the 'Less Is More' Haircut That Suits All Ages

Structured shape and precise lines might have once dominated hairstyles in the past, but the mood now is very much about undone, natural movement. It's why boho hairstyles have cropped back into the conversation, with shorter bob iterations and long, laissez-faire looks taking over sharp haircuts and asymmetric cuts.
Margot Robbie is the latest celebrity opting for the look this summer, and as hairstylist Sam McKnight explains, it's a cut that works favorably for all weather. "I wanted to give Margot an effortless wavy bob. London was in the midst of a heatwave so working to create an undone texture was just what we were after," he shared.
"To create the look, I misted my Modern Hairspray over each section before waving on a medium curling tong. It gives hold, heat, and humidity protection," he added.
What defines a soft wavy bob?
An undone wavy bob will inevitably look and feel different depending on your hair type and texture. "It's very personal, down to your hair type, texture, lifestyle and hairlines," agrees McKnight. "All of this influences how a hairdresser would cut your bob. You can't do a one rule fits all here," he adds.
How to achieve a wavy bob for your hair type
"Start by looking at your natural texture," suggests McKnight. "If your hair is straight you will need to add some waves with a curling tong or a straightener, whichever works for you," he shares.

"If your hair is curly, stretch the curls out with a hairdryer to relax them. A light defining cream is perfect here," he adds.
"When getting a bob with curly or coily hair, it's important to communicate with the stylist about desired length, layering, and whether any specific techniques like texturizing or diffusing are preferred," Blue Tit's afro and textured hair specialist, Pashcan'el Mitchell , previously told ELLE. "Asking for a cut that enhances natural curl patterns and provides movement is key."
When it comes to styling, McKnight says, "don't over think it, or over complicate it." A couple of key styling products for straight hair can include a light sea salt spray or nourishing balm. Meanwhile, wavy and curlier hair types can use a curl cream to define their natural curl pattern.
This is a cut that's all about a "less is more" approach, which is just the type of beauty philosophy we want to emulate come summer.
