IT'S QUITE POSSIBLE THAT MASCARAhas been the loudest thing on your face for years. And now, there's a new trend that's here to turn down the volume. 'Ghost lashes' refer to an effort to add a little impact to your fringe without the need for coat after coat of makeup. The idea: Curl, add a single whisper of brown mascara, and let your natural lashes take the lead.

It's a decidedly different take—especially for someone like me. I wore lash extensions for more than a decade and mastered the at-home versions during the pandemic and beyond. But now,, I'm coming around to skipping mascara (though I'll keep my tightlining, thank you very much). It's beauty's back-to-basics era, lash edition. Fewer products, less fuss, more of what you already have.

My lash drawer can finally, exhilaratingly, let out a deep exhale. "We've become so used to seeing a full lash that taking it away suddenly feels...interesting," says celebrity makeup artist Benjamin Puckey . It tracks with what he's seeing in the chair: Clients are asking for less mascara and no longer requesting falsies. The payoff reaches well past what's sprouting from your lids. Leaving lashes bare allows the rest of your face finally gets a turn. "You notice the skin, the shape of the eyes or the lip color differently," Puckey says.

Meet the experts: Benjamin Puckey is a celebrity makeup artists based in New York City. Tobi Henney is a celebrity makeup artist based in Los Angeles.

Ahead, how to pull it off at home and what to know before you break up with black mascara.

What are ghost lashes?

Picture the no-makeup makeup look, but for your eyes. Puckey describes ghost lashes as lashes left bare or wearing so little mascara you barely register it. Curling is fine and a light coat of brown is fine. The thickness, the black pigment and, of course, the falsies are out. Makeup artist Tobi Henney keeps her definition refreshingly short: Ghost lashes are when "you don't use mascara on the lashes and they are left natural." She has the red carpet receipts, too. "I did this look in Cannes on Barbara Palvin," she says. Her styling rule: The rest of your face "has to have stand out elements," such as a flush of blush or a statement lip, "to carry the look."

The trend grew out of the no-makeup movement, which started when Pamela Anderson gave up most makeup back in 2019. By 2025, it had trickled down to runways: Valentino's spring/summer 2025 show and Gucci Cruise 2026 in May 2025 featured bare-lash looks. Then, more young Gen Z TikTok creators started posting clean makeup looks with no mascara, framing it as a recession-proof beauty move. The look spread further as Addison Rae, Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber posted bare-lash selfies and became a mainstream summer 2026 trend when Zendaya wore it to The Odyssey premiere.

We love it because it effectively ends the lash arms race. Skip the heavy stuff and your skin, your eye shape and your lip color get to shine. "It allows a little more of the person to come through," Puckey says. It's you, only a little more awake.

Another big part of this is the attempt to get your natural lashes to grown on their own, without the visual help of mascara. These days, there are plenty of options, from those that use analogues of prostaglandins (the active ingredient in prescription Latisse, widely considered to be the gold-standard in lash growth) and those without (prostaglandins can be irritating for some and some research shows they may cause color changes to the iris in rare cases). These products typically take several weeks to months to show results, but many can be extremely effective at boosting the length and volume of your natural lashes.

How to get ghost lashes yourself

Good news: This routine costs you less time and less money than the one you're doing now. The trick is to let your lashes be the last thing you think about. Keep your skin light, dab on concealer where you need it, add blush and brush your brows into place. Then work through the steps below.

  • Start clean.Make sure your lashes are clean and dry, with no mascara or oily residue left behind.

  • Finish the rest of your face first.Henney's order is skincare, base, contour, blush, brows, eyeshadow and maybe liner, then lip liner and lip color. Lashes come last.

  • Curl, and curl smart.Get close to the root without catching your skin and give the lashes a gentle squeeze. Release, move slightly farther along and squeeze again, using lighter pressure toward the tips. Puckey says this gives you a rounded curve instead of one sharp bend. The mistake Henney sees most: "People miss the ends of the lash." Don't skip them.

  • Take a beat.Look at your whole face before you decide whether your lashes need anything at all.

  • Want a little definition? Go brown.Wipe the excess off the wand, apply one light coat from root through the lengths, then brush through with a clean spoolie before it sets. Puckey likes Dior's Diorshow Overvolume Extreme Volume Mascara in Overbrown , a reddish plum-brown, and the Clio Kill Lash Superproof Mascara in Mousse Brown for a more neutral shade. He typically leaves the lower lashes bare.

What else is there to know?

Plenty. A fair warning: Ghost lashes aren't one-size-fits-all. Puckey says contrast matters. On a low-contrast face, where skin, hair, brows and lashes are close in color, black mascara can become the loudest thing you see, while brown feels more balanced. If you have naturally dark lashes against lighter skin, you may already have plenty of definition. Fair or sparse lashes can make the no-mascara look less appealing if you're used to a stronger frame around your eyes.

Age may play a part, too. Puckey finds the fully bare version is often easier to wear under 40, though he wouldn't call it a rule. As lashes get finer or less dense, a little mascara can make a real difference to how defined your eyes look. It's also important to mind your technique. Puckey says the most common curler mistakes are squeezing too hard, curling over dried mascara and using a worn or damaged pad. Never pull the curler through your lashes while it's clamped shut.

Then there's the serum question. Henney is a fan: "I love the Sweed Eyelash Growth Serum , it works wonders," she says. Her timeline for short or sparse lashes: "You need a few weeks or months to see results." Puckey takes a different view. You don't need a serum to try this look, and he wouldn't start an expensive routine just to make a trend work. He leaves ingredient picks and timelines to a dermatologist or eye doctor. On safety, Henney says to "always check if you have contact lenses," and Puckey says to ask an eye doctor, especially if you have sensitive eyes or wear contacts. If a product irritates your eyes, stop using it. If your lashes have suddenly gone sparse or patchy, Puckey says to have a dermatologist take a look.

Your ghost-lash game plan.

Set your expectations before you start. Ghost lashes read softer and less defined than a full, mascara-heavy lash. A curler can make short lashes more visible, but it can't create density that isn't there. If you go the serum route, Henney's advice is brief: "Be consistent."

Here's your homework. Finish your makeup, curl your lashes, then pause before you reach for the mascara. "You might like what you see," Puckey says. And if you miss the definition, add a little brown. Going fully bare is optional. "There's no need to follow the idea so literally that you stop feeling like yourself," Puckey says.

Wear it your way, and you've done it right.
