While some people might embrace having smaller hands , there are also those with fingers on the shorter side who might be looking for ways to elongate their digits. Fortunately for people in the latter camp, there are a few nail shapes that can give the illusion of lengthening short and stubby fingers.

To learn more, we spoke with Marlisse Murguido , a professional nail technician at the Paul Labrecque Salon and Skincare Spa in Palm Beach, Fla., where she specializes in gel manicures and pedicures, intricate nail art and custom press-on nails.

According to Murguido, there are three nail shapes that do a particularly great job at elongating short fingers and making small hands appear more slender and elegant.

One of these three shapes can work for nails of any length, while the other two shapes work best on longer nails. Below, check out Murguido's picks for nail shapes that can elongate short fingers, as well as her instructions for achieving each shape at home, her suggestions for polish colors to complement each shape and her recommendations for what at-home manicure products you need.

These three nail shapes are especially flattering for hands with short fingers, according to Murguido.

1. Almond

Almond nails are shaped similar to the shape of actual almonds, with the sides of the nails coming to a softened pointed end.

"Almond nail shapes can make short fingers appear longer because [the] tapered sides create a smooth, elongated appearance," Murguido explains.

"The rounded tip draws the eye toward the end of the nail, making the fingers look slender," she continues. "Its narrow shape helps balance wider or shorter-looking fingers without making them appear bulky. Almond nails also create a graceful, feminine silhouette that visually adds length to the hands."

"For almond nails, file both sides inward toward the center, then gently round the tip to create the characteristic almond shape," advises Murguido. "Make sure both sides are even and the tip is centered for a balanced look."

As for polish, Murguido's favorite colors for an almond nail shape are soft nudes, blush pink , beige and light neutral shades.

These "work especially well because they enhance the elongated appearance of the nails," she says. "French tips can also look beautiful on almond nails because they emphasize the tapered shape."

2. Stiletto

Inspired by stiletto high heels, stiletto nails , which work best on longer nails, involve the sides of the nails coming to a sharp pointed edge.

"Although a bit of a controversial shape, the stiletto nail shape is especially effective at elongating short fingers because of its long, sharply tapered design," Murguido says.

"The pointed tip directs attention outward and creates the illusion of extra length," she explains. "Its narrow sides make the fingers appear slimmer and more elongated. Because the shape extends the visual line of the finger, it can make the entire hand look longer and more dramatic."

"For stiletto nails, file both sides diagonally toward the center until they form a sharp, pointed tip, checking frequently to keep the shape symmetrical," Murguido advises. "Use a fine-grit nail file to smooth the edges and carefully refine the point."

When it comes to choosing a color for stiletto-shaped nails, Murguido's recommendation is on the other end of the spectrum from her picks for almond nails: black, deep red, burgundy and dark purple.

Bold nail colors like these "complement stiletto nails and make the dramatic shape stand out," she says. "Metallics and glitter can also add an eye-catching finish."

3. Tapered square

Tapered square nails start with a classic square shape, but then the sides of the nails are filed gently at an angle, softening the square a bit.

"Tapered square nails can elongate short fingers by combining a narrow, tapered design with a straighter tip," says Murguido.

"The sides gradually become narrower toward the free edge, creating a lengthening effect without being as pointed as a stiletto," she adds. "The structured shape draws the eye vertically along the finger, making it appear longer. It is also a great option for creating a balanced, polished look while adding the appearance of length to shorter fingers."

Something great about tapered square nails is that they work on nails of any length, whereas for almond and stiletto nails, you need your nails to be on the longer side.

"For tapered square nails, file the sides slightly inward toward the tip," explains Murguido. "Keep the free edge straight across rather than rounding it, creating the square tip while maintaining a gentle taper on the sides. Check each nail from different angles to make sure the sides are even and the tips are straight."

Similarly to almond nails, for tapered square nails, Murguido recommends opting for soft pinks, nudes, milky white and classic French tips . These options "look particularly good with tapered square nails because they create a clean and polished appearance," she clarifies. "For a bolder look, bright colors can also highlight the structured shape."
