Key Takeaways

  • Nuance nails combine layers of cat-eye and jelly polish with hints of chrome for an earthy, watercolor-like effect.

  • The technique rose to popularity in Japan and Korea, and is now making its way to the U.S.

  • Find 15 stunning examples of the trending manicure, below.

When you picture chrome, cat-eye, and jelly polishes mixed together in one manicure, subtle might not be the first word that comes to mind. However, there’s one trend making its way stateside by way of Japan and Korea that combines all of these finishes, and somehow looks airier than ever: nuance nails.

With layers of milky and jelly polishes swirled over glowing, cat-eye bases , then outlined with hints of chrome, nuance nails look like minerals unearthed from deep underground. They’re typically painted in earthy, nature-inspired hues, like forest greens, warm browns, and rich, deep-sea blues. Sometimes they look more like abstract florals, with hints of red and yellow peeking through a wash of creamy neutrals .

Celebrity nail artist and educator Julie Kandalec noted the trend when she attended the Tokyo Nail Expo in late 2025. “The majority, 85 percent of what I saw [in Japan] was nuance,” she previously shared with InStyle . The looks she saw were inspired by "lots of rocks and earthy things like quartz.” Nail artist San Sung Kim also told InStyle that she hoped the “organic, earthy look” would catch on here.
