In line with her makeup-free philosophy, Pamela Anderson makes a strong case for the no-manicure manicure . She was seen sporting a barely-there mani in a recent Instagram video. While we're all for a maximalist nail art moment and adding dramatic lengths to our tips, a minimalist, almost-bare manicure is an excellent way to give our nails a break every so often. It's also ideal for those who prefer a minimalist, low-maintenance approach. Plus, there's no denying that keeping things bare means never clashing your nails with the rest of your outfit.

To ensure your hands still look refined sans color polish, "glass nails" are the answer. "With a color-free manicure, the condition of the natural nail becomes the focus, so good prep makes all the difference," says Susan Carroll, founder of Young LDN, a beauty destination in London. "Start by keeping the nails a consistent length and shape. I personally love a short squoval or softly rounded shape for bare nails because it always looks really well-maintained."

Next comes cuticle care. Carroll recommends gently pushing back the cuticle and using a cuticle oil to keep the surrounding area hydrated. "If the nail surface is slightly uneven, you can very lightly buff it to smooth out any ridges and bring back some natural shine, but you don't want to over-buff as this can weaken the nail over time," suggests Carroll.

Having a smooth nail plate (try a ridge-filling base coat if needed) is key to ensuring your hands look well-manicured, even without color. For something extra shiny, opt for a gently tinted, transparent nail gloss or top coat.

"When you're not relying on color to make a manicure stand out, healthy-looking nails and hydrated skin are what give you that really polished, expensive-looking finish," Carroll adds. Keep a hand cream in your bag and use it throughout the day, especially after washing your hands.

There you have it: an easy, low-maintenance manicure that'll instantly make you look extra polished.
