Meet the four-step system that convinced me, a longtime salon regular, to start doing my own nails.

For years, I thought I had two choices when it came to manicures: either splurging on a crisp, long-lasting gel manicure that damaged my nails over time with peeling and poor removal or using regular polish, which was affordable and easy to remove but would visibly chip within a day or two. But after doing some research, I stumbled upon Dazzle Dry , a nail polish system that seemed to combine the best of both worlds.

It's far from rocket science; in fact, it's a simple polish system, but the results are impressive. The at-home regimen consists of a prep treatment, a base coat, a color and a top coat. When used as instructed, you get a hard, glossy, vibrant mani that mimics the look of gel and, in my experience, lasts up to two full weeks with minimal chipping. No UV lamp required.

After testing several shades for this review, I can see why we named Dazzle Dry the best nontoxic nail polish . You can get impressively close to gel in both longevity and appearance without the salon price tag, as long as you follow the protocol to a tee. Let's dive into exactly how to achieve long-lasting results at home.

Dazzle Dry offers vegan and formaldehyde-free lacquers in cream, jelly, shimmer, glitter, holographic, frost, metallic and duochrome shades. The system consists of a prep solution, a colored varnish of your choice, a top coat and a bottle of its Revive solution, which is designed to be mixed into your polishes if the consistency starts to clump or dry up.

Pros
  • Long-lasting with a shiny, gel-like finish
  • Lots of color options
  • Vegan and formaldehyde-free
  • Dries very quickly
Cons

How does Dazzle Dry work?

  1. Remove any old nail polish so that you can start with completely bare nails.

  2. Use the Nail Prep Primer to clean the nail surface and remove any oils.

  3. Apply a layer of the Base Coat. Let it dry completely before applying a second layer.

  4. Apply a layer of the color of your choice. Let it dry completely before applying a second layer.

  5. Finish off with a layer of the Top Coat. Wait 5 minutes for it to completely dry.

  6. Remove with standard acetone nail polish remover when you're ready for your next manicure.

Note: It's important not to skip any steps. I tried a manicure that skipped the base coat and found that the polish chipped within a day or two like any other lacquer would. And skipping the top coat means the final finish will be duller and bumpier, rather than extra-glossy and smooth.

What I loved

My biggest praise is that Dazzle Dry polish looks, well, more polished than your average varnish. The top coat, in particular, is extra shiny and seems to smooth out any lumps and bumps from your polish application. I also tested the Ridge Filler varnish, which fills in any unwanted texture on your nail bed to create a seamless, gel-like base. It's a subtle, sheer shade of pink but it makes a big difference — and even works nicely as a your-nails-but-better neutral shade when you want your manicure to look polished but not overly "done."

The longevity is no joke either. My Dazzle Dry manicures typically lasted one to two weeks, and that's coming from someone who isn't particularly gentle with her hands. Senior Deals Writer Carrie McCabe agrees: "As a mom of an under two-er, I have to wash my hands a lot." She cites "the constant bottle washing, pump scrubbing, stain-busting and so on" as reasons she stopped bothering with nail polish that would chip right off, but explains that since she's started using Dazzle Dry, she can "wear a shade for 2 weeks with minimal chipping" even with "scrubbing my hands a ton more than the typical person."

It's cost-effective as well. I'd rather spend $39 on a Dazzle Dry kit that gives me several manicures than the $60 I typically spend on a single gel manicure that lasts two to three weeks before peeling off. The polish selection is extensive too. The brand offers a wide range of colors, including cream and jelly finishes as well as glitter, metallic, holographic and duochrome sparkle options.

What I'd change

Dazzle Dry is good, but it's only an airtight system if you execute it correctly. Some of my best Dazzle Dry manicures lasted more than three weeks, while the more rushed jobs chipped after a week. I found that I achieved the best results when I followed the protocol step by step without skimping in any area. That means double base coats, two color coats and a top coat with the full drying time between each step. Put on an episode of your favorite TV show while you do your nails, and I promise it'll go quickly.

I also found that thin coats were the way to go. It may be tempting to glob on a thicker coat for instant opacity and less streaking, but the thicker coats seemed to peel off faster and took much longer to dry. Lastly, the base coat tends to get cloudy over time. When you start seeing clouding in the bottle, warm it in a bowl of warm water until the polish clears — then you can go ahead and apply it.

The final verdict: Dazzle Dry is worth it for a long-lasting at-home manicure

If it wasn't clear already, I'm a newly converted Dazzle Dry lover, and I've made it my mission to spread the word to everyone in my life. The polish system lives up to its claims — you can achieve a shiny manicure with minimal chipping that lasts for one to two weeks just by following each step. I've had people mistake my Dazzle Dry nails for gel, which is high praise, considering gel has a distinctly glossy, smooth look that's hard to recreate with non-UV-cured polish. If you're looking for an approachable alternative to pricey salon appointments or risking a DIY gel manicure, I'd wholeheartedly recommend trying out Dazzle Dry. You may just find that it'll convert you too.
