gettyAs temperatures drop and humidity levels fall, body care deserves the same attention as your facial care . From hydrating cleansers to exfoliating formulas and fragrance-forward washes, today's body wash category offers options that go beyond basic cleansing. But with formulas promising smoother, brighter or firmer-looking skin, knowing what to prioritize as the seasons change is key.
Dermatologists Dr. Ava Shamban and Dr. Jeanine Downie emphasize the importance of adapting body-care routines to seasonal changes, prioritizing hydration, supporting the skin barrier and approaching exfoliation strategically.
In this article we'll explore body cleansers across several categories, with options for different skin concerns, preferences and budgets.
Why Fall Calls for a Body-Care Reset
According to Dr. Shamban, cooler weather and reduced humidity can change how the skin feels and functions.
"As the water molecules are pulled out of the epidermis into the air, our skin becomes more like a dry sponge," Shamban explains, describing the effects of transepidermal water loss, the process through which water evaporates from the skin.
The result can be skin that feels tight, looks dull or becomes more uncomfortable. Shamban also notes that seasonal changes can affect the skin's natural rhythms, particularly when temperature, daylight hours and sleep patterns shift.
"In the fall skin can be tired and dull, dehydrated and sallow," she says. "It can also be tight, with the textural changes or otherwise uncomfortable."
That makes fall a useful time to reassess the products used daily, starting with the cleanser. Rather than defaulting to a heavily fragranced wash or an aggressive exfoliant, the goal is to choose a formula that addresses a particular concern without unnecessarily compromising the skin barrier.
The Hydration Edit: Cleansing Without Stripping
Dr. Downie recommends adapting body care before colder weather takes hold. "Switch to a hydrating body wash that supports the skin barrier," she advises, noting that lower humidity, cold air and indoor heating can strip skin of natural moisture.
Downie suggests swapping harsh physical scrubs for chemical exfoliants, such as mandelic or lactic acid, as skin's natural renewal process slows in cooler months. She also advises keeping showers lukewarm, since prolonged exposure to hot water can increase transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and contribute to dehydration.
The Fall Body Wash Edit
Combining insights from both dermatologists with my own product picks, I've curated this edit around the body-care formulas worth considering as the seasons change.
Body Wash For a Fragrance-Forward Shower
For consumers who want their shower to feel like an elevated daily ritual, these picks bring fragrance and sensorial appeal into the body-care routine. Fragrance remains a personal preference, however heavily fragranced products may not suit everyone with sensitive skin.

BYOMA Brightening Body Wash:An option for those looking to add a brightening-focused cleanser to their body-care lineup.
