As a beauty editor, it's my job to trial and deep dive into every new skin care launch that comes across my desk (it's how we curate the Future of Beauty Awards ). But where most editors get excited over hard-hitting serums and high-tech gadgets, my enthusiasm lies in testing sunscreens .

The Whipped Texture: Dr. Idriss Major Fade Disco Block SPF 50 , $38
Growing up in the warm, tropical climates of Malaysia, SPF is basically a part of the culture. We're conditioned to wear them from a young age, and since we had access to Korean and Japanese beauty well before the Western world, it was easy to find thin, fluid textures that don't feel heavy in the balmy humidity yet still offer high protection. Thankfully, K-beauty has now gone global (and inspired many a Western formula), which means there are even more sunscreens to choose from than ever.
Next to being a shield for your skin, SPF also defends against UVA and UVB rays, which are responsible for premature lines and hyperpigmentation . In short, there's really no point in slathering on fancy serums and investing in skin-boosting injectables or LED masks if you're not protected from the sun. And as someone with oily and acne-prone skin, I understand just how tricky it is to find an SPF that not only feels lightweight through sweaty heatwaves and doesn't cause breakouts but also delivers enough hydration to offset drying, air-conditioned air in the office and wears smoothly under makeup.
Consultant dermatologist and founder of Self London , Dr. Anjali Mahto, recommends looking for non-comedogenic labels, which means the formula has been tested to not clog pores. "You should also actively seek out ultra-lightweight gel or fluid textures rather than heavy, traditional creams, as these absorb rapidly without leaving a greasy, occlusive film that can trap excess sebum," says Mahto, who's a big fan of Heliocare 360 Oil-Free Gel . Formulas with niacinamide will also help to regulate oil production and soothe existing blemishes while providing UV protection. The best SPF will always be the one that you love using, so Dr. Mahto is a fan of oil-free and dry-touch finishes that help control midday shine.
Along with my fellow beauty editors, I've tested more than 40 sunscreens this year—and these are the standout formulas we keep reaching for. It goes without saying, but all of them work well for every skin tone.
EltaMD UV Daily Limited-Edition Bottle Broad-Spectrum SPF 40
Most of us have heard of EltaMD's cult-favorite UV Daily sunscreen, and the rave reviews are well deserved. The lightweight, hydrating formula layers seamlessly under makeup and is infused with hyaluronic acid to plump and moisturize, along with vitamin E to help soften the appearance of fine lines. For Skin Cancer Awareness Month, the brand has released a joyful limited-edition bottle created in collaboration with acclaimed artist Lucy Kirk—making now the perfect time to stock up.
Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, vitamin E
Size: 1.7 fl oz
ELLE editor review: "My sister first introduced me to this sunscreen on vacation after I forgot mine, and it's been a staple in my routine ever since. The ultra-lightweight formula feels virtually undetectable on skin and doubles as a smoothing, protective primer under foundation. But most importantly, I no longer worry about leaving the house with a reddened nose or forehead after a day in the sun."– Laura Tarafa , commerce writer
Beauty of Joseon Day Dew Sunscreen Lightweight SPF 50
If you've been chasing that coveted dewy glow without compromising on sun protection, Beauty of Joseon's non-comedogenic Day Dew Sunscreen deserves a spot on your radar. The lightweight formula melts seamlessly into skin with zero white cast, while skin-care-forward ingredients like panthenol and niacinamide help hydrate and support the skin barrier over time.
Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, panthenol
Size: 1.7 fl oz
Customer review: "So lightweight and perfect for under makeup or on its own. I have sensitive skin, and it did not break me out or cause any irritation. Definitely a new addition to my daily routine."
La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Air Daily Supercharged Serum Sunscreen SPF 50
If it feels like La Roche-Posay now has an SPF for every skin type and concern, you're not wrong. Its 2026 launch is not only lighter than ever, but it's also designed to deliver skin care benefits to even the most sensitive complexions. Niacinamide, vitamin E, and glycerin promise to rebalance and brighten the skin, all while feeling and looking completely invisible. It doesn't interfere with makeup either. This untinted version works for all skin tones, but I'm also partial to the Medium Tint , which helps even out my complexion on makeup-free days.
Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide
Size: 1.7 fl oz
Customer review: "I love that it layers perfectly under makeup and keeps my skin looking smooth and fresh all day. The added skin care ingredients and antioxidants make it feel like I'm doing something extra for my skin while still getting amazing sun protection. Five stars!"

ELLE editor review: "Something about a whipped sunscreen instantly intrigued me, so naturally I had to give it a try. The texture is incredibly soft and buttery, melting seamlessly into the skin. From the first application, I was impressed by the beautifully radiant finish it gave my complexion. Since then, I've worn it on scorching beach days and can safely say my skin stayed protected and completely burn-free."–Laura Tarafa, commerce writer
CeraVe Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
Whether you have a very oily complexion or you're heading somewhere extra hot this summer, CeraVe's Invisible Mineral Sunscreen is a must-have. The texture blends out easily, dries completely matte, and stays shine-free throughout the day. As with all CeraVe products, the formula is loaded with ceramides to help keep your skin strong and healthy.
