So you've finally decided to embrace the bald look with a fresh shave and a new swagger . It's been working out splendidly, but now you're suddenly face to face with your first June as a bald man. What the hell are you supposed to do to make sure your head doesn't burn under the summer sun?
Here's a good rule of thumb for scalp sunscreens in general: If it's good enough for your mug, it's good enough for your dome. It's not too much more complicated than that. Your head skin is just an extension of your face skin, or vice versa depending on how you look at it. Point being, all the sunscreens you already love for your face, the tips of your ears, and the back of your neck will work just fine on your newly bald head. And if what you're already using isn't working on your scalp, well, you've come to the right place. These eight Esquire-favorite sunscreens are all excellent options for bald guys who don't want their scalps to get fried this summer.
1) CeraVe Invisible Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
We are about to go on and list a bunch of sunscreens, each of which brings one or two big things to the table. From moisturizing and high SPF lotions to effective and sensitive skin-friendly mineral sunscreens, everything has its strengths. This one from CeraVe has pretty much all of them, packed into one (extremely affordable) tube.
First off, this is a mineral sunscreen , which means its great for sensitive or acne-prone skin. It's oil-free and moisturizing. And it goes on lightweight and invisible once you rub in, not leaving behind the white cast typical of mineral sunscreens. Unlike most SPF products, this doesn't simply protect; it helps you glow.
2) Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing UV Lock SPF 45
This Korean face sunscreen is a favorite with our editors for its moisturizing qualities. It's light and has been keeping our faces, ears, and necks from burning all spring and summer. No doubt this is the stuff you should be putting on your head.
3) Jaxon Lane Rain Or Shine Daily Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 50+
We all know that SPF 50+ is a pretty meaningless label, but if it makes you feel safe, here's a great sunscreen for your scalp that fits the bill. Jaxon Lane's Rain or Shine was named the best facial sunscreen in our Grooming Awards a few years back and many of us have been using it ever since. It's a great face sunscreen and will work wonders applied to your scalp on a sunny day.
4) EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 Sunscreen
If you have a sensitive scalp prone to breakouts and ingrown hairs, you should forgo the affordable go with the medical-grade stuff. Trust us, it will be worth it. EltaMd is a top dermatologist-recommended brand and this SPF 46 sunscreen is full of calming agents that will help soothe your scalp, while still offering superior protection.
5) Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 30
Here's another great lightweight facial sunscreen that will work just as brilliantly on your scalp. It goes on easy and rubs in clear and comfortable.
6) Neutrogena Ultra Transparent Invisible Gel Face Sunscreen SPF 40
If the lotions aren't quite invisible enough for you, it may be time to try a gel. Ditto that if you just want something that's a bit more water resistant than a cream-based sunscreen. This one from Neutrogena is packed with Vitamin E and is excellent at nourishing and hydrating dry faces (and scalps).
7) Sun Bum Sunscreen Spray SPF 50
For the most part it's hard to trust spray sunscreens, especially when a burnt head is on the line. But, if you're skin is not too sensitive, they are easy and require minimal effort to rub in. If you prefer the ease, we'd have to recommend the OG Sun Bum above all the others. For the scalp, SPF 50 is where you should be with this one.
8) Korres Mineral Milk Fluid Sunscreen SPF 50
Rounding it out is a newer mineral SPF that we think is a top-notch option for sensitive skin. This yogurt-based concoction includes niacinamide and 10 percent zinc oxide, building a barrier that offers complete and immediate mineral protection. It will help keep your scalp safe, moisturized, and burn-free.
