Maker’s Mark’s New Limited-Edition Whisky Brings Together Oak From 3 Continents
The inaugural release in a brand-new series.

If you've ever browsed an airport duty-free shop and spotted an unfamiliar whisky , there's a reason for that. Brands sometimes release bottles exclusively for travelers, making them difficult to find at distilleries or retailers in the United States. If you're traveling internationally, a duty-free shop can be a chance to pick up something you can't easily buy at home.
Maker's Mark announced today that it released Expedition 01, the first limited-edition whisky in its new World Wood Collection. The whisky is finished with oak staves from three continents: Japanese Mizunara, American white oak, and French oak. According to the brand, each contributes a distinct flavor:
-
Japanese Mizunaraoak contributes delicate floral notes and subtle umami complexity.
-
American white oakdelivers sweet vanilla notes, brightness, and a rounded character.
-
French oakintroduces warm baking spice, caramel richness, and an elegant, lingering finish.

"At Maker's Mark, we celebrate bourbon as an agricultural product and the universe of flavor that can be unlocked through nature—water, wheat, oak and time," said Rob Samuels, managing director and eighth-generation whisky maker, in a release shared with Southern Living . "That belief has long guided our commitment to sustainable forestry and to protecting the future of American white oak. Through intentional wood finishing, The World Wood Collection explores exceptional oak from around the world to create a whisky that expands the boundaries of flavor while staying true to our craft."
Wood finishing has long been part of Maker's Mark's approach to whisky, including its use of oak staves in Maker's Mark 46. The brand has also invested in the future of American white oak through regenerative farming at its Star Hill Farm .
Expedition 01 is bottled at 95 proof and comes in a one-liter bottle with a suggested retail price of $84.99. Beginning today, it will be sold exclusively at Avolta airport outlets through Maker's Mark's Global Travel Retail program.
