I've Tested 250+ Mattresses—These Are the 8 I'd Tell My Friends to Buy

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."
I've been testing mattresses for more than a decade, and the biggest challenge shoppers face today isn't finding a good one—it's choosing between all the good ones. There are hundreds of options, many of which perform surprisingly well in our evaluations. That's great, but it also makes the decision more overwhelming than ever.
I'm here to help. I'm a fiber scientist (meaning I have a degree in the chemistry and engineering behind fabrics) and I oversee testing at the Good Housekeeping Institute, where I spent much of my career evaluating mattresses. Along with the experts in our GH Institute Textiles Lab , we've tested more than 250 mattresses and analyzed survey feedback from over 10,000 people. Our top recommendation is the Saatva Classic Mattress , thanks to its durable construction, high comfort scores, and free in-home setup, but here are the eight I most consistently recommend based on results from the work we've done.
Our top picks:
✔️ Best overall: Saatva Classic Mattress
A well-rounded innerspring mattress that works for a wide range of sleepers.
✔️ Best under $1,000: Sealy Posturepedic Spring Mattress
Impressive pressure relief and one of the best values we've tested.
✔️ Best under $500: Allswell Luxe Hybrid
A comfy hybrid model that feels more expensive than it is.
✔️ Best hybrid: Bear Elite Hybrid
With top comfort ratings, testers consistently rave about how well they sleep on it.
✔️ Best memory foam: Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud
A body-conforming feel, delivering exceptional pressure relief and motion isolation.
One quick note:Don't get too caught up in the percentage-off claims. Most mattress brands run promotions year-round, so I pay more attention to the actual selling price than the advertised discount.
1) Saatva Classic Mattress
Choose this for a well-rounded, high-quality bed
This is the mattress I've recommended most often to friends, family members, and colleagues over the years. Saatva's mattress consistently earns some of the highest comfort and support ratings in our testing, and unlike many online mattresses, it comes with free in-home setup and mattress removal. It has a traditional, bouncy innerspring feel that's supportive, breathable, and easy to move around on, making it a great fit for anyone who doesn't want the sink-in sensation of memory foam.
It's pricier than other online mattresses (and to be honest, the price keeps increasing!), but you can expect the coil construction to hold up longer than memory foam.
What you're getting (and what you're giving up)
It uses two layers of coils, which is more than most mattresses we test and helps it create a supportive, responsive feel while allowing for more airflow than an all-foam mattress. It's available in three firmness levels and two heights, so shoppers have more flexibility than with most other models.
The tradeoff is that it runs firmer than some sleepers expect. Side sleepers or smaller body frames who prefer a softer feel may want to consider the Plush Soft version, or potentially opt for a mattress with more memory foam. And while the year-long trial period is generous, Saatva charges a $99 fee if you decide to return the mattress.
Why it stands out from other innerspring mattresses
Most of the innerspring mattresses we see are either super cheap and uncomfortable or super high-end and expensive. This one truly feels like a sweet spot: It's an investment in a quality mattress, but it's not quite as expensive as other luxury innersprings.
The edge support is especially impressive. This makes it easier to get in and out of bed, and also won't sink in under pressure if you accidentally get too close to the end of your mattress while you sleep. The coils make it more breathable and feel noticeably cooler than mattresses with a substantial amount of memory foam.
What our testers said
We have testers try out this mattress on an ongoing basis and have surveyed more than 100 Saatva mattress owners, who consistently gave it high scores for support, comfort, and sleep quality. Our testers liked that it felt firmer and more supportive than memory foam, with standout edge support that made it easier to get in and out of bed. Despite its firmer feel, testers still described it as comfortable and not overly stiff: One called it "just the right amount of plush," while another said it was "not too firm, yet not too squishy." One user even said it led to "the best sleep I've ever had."
Testers also unanimously said they stayed at a comfortable temperature throughout the night, which makes sense given the breathable coil construction. Long-term owners frequently praised the durability and craftsmanship, with one telling us, "It is obvious that a great deal of detail went into making this mattress."
Ordering and in-home setup also went smoothly in our at-home tests, and any issues that came up were quickly resolved by Saatva's customer service.

- High scores for comfort and support from long-term testers
- Excellent edge support makes getting in and out of bed easier
- Coil construction helps it feel breathable and cool, while also increasing durability
- Less pressure relief and motion isolation than memory foam
- May feel too firm for some
2) Sealy Posturepedic Spring Mattress
Choose this for the best value
Mattress prices have been consistently on the rise, and it's become increasingly harder to find a good one under $1,000. But this one from Sealy Posturepedic delivers many of the features I'd expect from a more expensive mattress, including targeted support for your back, pressure relief, and free in-home setup. In fact, I recently featured it on Good Morning America in a segment about our GH Bedding Awards because we think it's one of the strongest values currently available.
What you're getting (and what you're giving up)
This mattress uses an innovative coil design that adapts to different body shapes better than a traditional innerspring. The coils are tightly wound and flexible on top, while more loosely wound and sturdy on the bottom. This means it conforms to how much pressure you're applying to it, giving it a personalized feel. It also comes with free white-glove delivery and mattress removal, which is becoming increasingly rare at this price point.
The main downside is flexibility. Unlike some of our other recommendations, this mattress is only available in one firmness level. While the medium feel will work well for most people, you can also add on a pillow-top for $200, which will make it feel more plush. It's also worth noting that while it does offer free in-home setup, it can take a few weeks (whereas other low-priced online mattresses are often delivered within days of ordering).
Why it's more comfortable than other low-cost innersprings
Many traditional innerspring mattresses feel supportive but don't do much to relieve pressure. What stands out about this model is how well it balances the two. The coil system allows for more contouring than you'd typically expect from an innerspring mattress, helping distribute weight more evenly without losing that classic "sleeping on top of the mattress" feel.
What our testers said
Our testers praised the balance of support and comfort after sleeping on it for months. "I noticed it contoured to the form of my body," one said. "It was firm enough to not sink into it, yet had a lot of cushion to it." She also said it felt better than previous innerspring mattresses: "I don't feel any springs as I did with my last mattress. It also wasn't too bouncy like my last one with the springs."
Our Textiles Lab analysts were impressed by the overall construction and the coil innovation. This is a fairly new model and we're continuing to collect long-term feedback, but our testing so far has us convinced it's a total steal.

3) Allswell Luxe Hybrid Mattress
Choose this for a total steal
Shopping on a tight budget doesn't mean you have to compromise on comfort or support, and that's why this mattress stands out. Despite its surprisingly low price (typically less than $400 for a Queen), it consistently earns high comfort ratings from our testers and praised for its cushy feel.
What's most impressive is how much mattress you're getting for the money. While plenty of budget-friendly options feel basic or stripped down, this one delivers a substantial feel that rivals mattresses at higher price points. If you're looking to stretch your budget as far as possible without ending up with a mattress that feels cheap, this is one of the smartest buys we've tested.
What you're getting (and what you're giving up)
Most mattresses under $500 are either entirely foam or very thin, meanwhile this one is a substantial 12-inch hybrid with memory foam, coils, and a quilted top layer. The foam layers provide cushioning and pressure relief, while the coils add support and airflow underneath. Several testers compared the feel to a plush hotel mattress.
Allswell describes it as Medium, but in our tests it leaned more medium-soft. It also comes in an Extra-Firm level, but its feedback wasn't as strong in our tests.
The main complaint is edge support. Multiple testers noted that the sides compressed when sitting or getting in and out of bed. This can be an issue if you have mobility concerns or if supportive edges are a priority.
Why it's hard to beat at this price
I've watched mattress prices steadily increase over the years, making a standout value harder to find. While many mattresses have become drastically more expensive (even when the construction hasn't changed), this one has remained consistently affordable. It was my top value recommendation years ago, but I feel even more confident recommending it today.
It's also owned by and sold through Walmart, which typically means quick shipping and a straightforward buying process. For first apartments, guest rooms, young adults, or anyone furnishing a space on a budget, it's a practical choice that doesn't feel like settling.
What our testers said
Testers praised the comfort. One described it as "supportive and plush" and said it felt like a "fancy hotel bed." Another shared, "I like the support that it provides without being firm."
Several testers also reported improvements in neck and back pain compared to their previous mattresses. They frequently called out the lack of edge support, but for the price, it impressed both our at-home testers and our mattress experts.

4) Bear Elite Hybrid
Choose this for next-level comfort
I've tried out a lot of mattresses over the years, but this is the one I personally sleep on at home. When our testers first evaluated it, I noticed that the feedback was unusually enthusiastic, with multiple people calling it the most comfortable mattress they'd ever slept on.I knew I had to try it for myself and once I did, I understood why.
Because it's a hybrid model, it uses memory foam and coils so you get the benefits of both—i.e. it feels plush without sacrificing support. And while some boxed hybrids start to sag and feel less comfortable after a year, this one has remained good as new for over three years and counting. In fact, I consistently fall asleep much easier than I used to on other mattresses.
What you're getting (and what you're giving up)
The hybrid mattress combines multiple layers of foam with a coil system underneath. It also incorporates a five-zone design that creates more pressure relief around the shoulders while offering additional support in areas like the hips and lower back. This helps keep your spine aligned, especially if you're a side sleeper.
It also features reinforced edges, which isn't the norm with boxed mattresses and makes it easier to get in and out of bed. Plus, you can choose from three firmness levels—Soft, Medium, and Firm—though I recommend the Medium for most shoppers.
The main callout is the weight for DIY setup. At roughly 110 pounds for a Queen, it's heavier than many boxed mattresses we've tested, which makes sense give how substantial it is. If you prefer full-service setup, Bear offers white-glove delivery for an extra $199 through Ryder, an outside company.
One other note: Bear claims its celliant-infused cover uses natural minerals designed to convert body heat into energy for recovery, but we weren't able to notice those claims in our evaluations. Still we stand behind this one for its comfort.
Why it's more comfortable than other hybrid mattresses
All hybrid mattresses combine foam and coils, but the makeup of those layers can look and feel noticeably different. What stood out to me about the Bear Elite Hybrid specifically is how substantial it is at 14 inches tall. This typically means there are more layers used, which translates to increased comfort, and pressure relief (something we definitely noticed in this model!). After several years of sleeping on it myself, I've also been impressed by how well it's held up over time, aside from pilling on the outer cover.
What our testers said
This mattress earned some of the highest comfort and sleep-quality scores we've ever received. Testers frequently told us they fell asleep faster, slept more soundly, and woke up feeling less sore, with one saying, "I love how supportive this mattress is without being too firm. It has saved me from weeks of hip and back pain."
Another tester told us, "This is undoubtedly the best mattress we've ever owned. We've traveled all over and have never had the sleep experience we now enjoy every night."

5) Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud®
Choose this for a body-hug feel
Tempur-Pedic is your best bet for a true memory foam mattress with that cradling, body-hugging feel. The brand is widely recognized for its foam that slowly adapts to your body, relieving pressure and preventing you from feeling your sleeping partner move. While many of the brand's mattresses cost several thousand dollars, the Tempur-Cloud offers the proprietary foam in a boxed model that's a fraction of the price.
What you're getting (and what you're giving up)
Instead of feeling like you're lying on top of the mattress, the foam gradually molds to your body to relieve pressure around your shoulders and hips, which is especially beneficial for side sleepers. It responds more slowly than other memory foam mattresses, so while it may feel firmer than expected when you first lie down, testers told us that it adapted as they settled in, creating a more personalized fit.
The mattress also excels at motion isolation. Couples repeatedly told us they couldn't feel their partners moving throughout the night, making it a great choice for light sleepers or those on different sleep schedules. And unlike many Tempur-Pedic mattresses, this model ships compressed in a box for easy delivery and DIY setup.
One thing to keep in mind is temperature. Dense memory foam tends to retain more heat than mattresses with coils, and some testers found it slept on the warmer side. If you prefer a mattress with coils, you can upgrade to the hybrid version for an additional cost. That said, our testers generally preferred Tempur-Pedic's all-foam models, which isn't surprising given that the brand built its reputation on foam.
At just 10 inches tall, it's also shorter than many hybrid and luxury mattresses. The lower profile should be fine for most people, but some may find it looks less substantial or makes getting in and out of bed more difficult. It ships in a box for DIY setup, but the lower height and absence of metal coils make it easier than other boxed models.
Why it stands out from other memory foam
Many boxed foam mattresses have an immediate sink-in sensation, but Tempur-Pedic's foam responds more gradually. That slower contouring is what gives the mattress its distinctive body-hugging feel and is a big reason the brand has developed such a loyal following over the years.
The foam is also better quality; testers who previously slept on other foam mattress-in-a-box models called this one a noticeable upgrade for its overall feel and support. And in our survey of mattress owners, long-term users were impressed by how well it hold up, which is a big feat considering that foam tends to sag quicker than coils.
What our testers said
Our testers gave this mattress high praise for comfort and support, telling us they slept well on it. One said, "I feel like my entire body is supported in a very gentle way," while another described it as a "feeling of sinking into a warm hug when you sleep."
Couples also highlighted the motion isolation. As one tester put it, "When my husband gets into bed (always after I go to bed), I feel nothing. I am not disturbed at all and almost never even wake up if I am asleep."

7) Casper Original Mattress
Choose this if convenience matters
Casper helped make the mattress-in-a-box category mainstream, and its "Original" model remains one of the boxed mattresses I recommend most often. Truthfully, I was highly skeptical when I first attended the brand's launch back in 2014, but it has come a long way over the years. Now, it strikes an ideal balance between comfort, support, convenience, and price.
Its Medium-Firm feel is especially well suited for side and back sleepers who like the cradling comfort of foam without sinking in too deeply. It also has a moderate 11-inch height, making it more substantial than thinner budget foam mattresses but easier to maneuver than many tall hybrids. And because you can purchase it on Amazon, you get that "I know exactly when it'll arrive" convenience when ordering.
What you're getting (and what you're giving up)
This model has surprisingly useful features that you don't typically find in an all-foam mattress. Most notably is the zoned foam layer, which is soft under your shoulders while firmer under your hips and lower back. This helps keep your spine aligned when you sleep, ensuring your hips don't dip too far down and creating less pressure on your shoulders.
Beyond that, the fact that it's entirely made of foam means you get motion isolation, a lower cost, and a lighter weight compared to boxed hybrid models. As a result, it's easier to set it up and easier to lift when you're changing your sheets. This might not seem like a big deal, but it makes a noticeable difference when I'm comparing models that are otherwise similar.
That being said, you give up some benefits compared to hybrid mattresses, including the springier feel, breathability, and edge support that you get from having a layer of coils.
Why we prefer the Original over other Casper models
Casper has expanded its mattress lineup over the years, but we find that this model remains the most balanced option in the brand's assortment. The most basic and least expensive model is called the One , and it doesn't include the zoned layer that we like in the Original.
On the higher end, Casper's hybrid and upgraded models can cost several thousand dollars. At that price point, I'd opt for a traditional luxury mattress that includes in-home setup and may wind up being more durable in the long run. But the Original sits in the sweet spot: It's a worthy investment, but it's not overly expensive.
What our testers said
Our testers especially liked the comfort and support. One told us, "it conforms to your body," and another said, "It is extremely comfy—so comfy that we bought two more for other beds." They also liked the motion isolation, with one user on our survey panel pointing out, "It helps with motion transfer much more than the old innerspring mattress I had."
The convenience was also an important factor. We've surveyed more than 250 Casper mattress owners for in-depth feedback, and the majority had great experiences with ordering, setup, and customer service.

- Zoned foam layer keeps shoulders and hips aligned
- Earned high ratings from long-term users; you can expect it to last
- Lighter and easier to setup than hybrid models
- Its all-foam design lacks the bounce and resiliency of coil-based hybrids
8) Stearns & Foster Estate Mattress
Choose this if you want firm support
In today's mattress market, most models are designed to appeal to the broadest possible audience, which often means they lean softer and more cushioned. Many are also compressed into boxes for shipping, which has helped make foam and hybrid mattresses the most prominent options online. If you want a high-end mattress with the classic firm feel you'd expect from a luxury bed, this is the model I'd point you toward.
In fact, it's one of the firmest mattresses we've tested: The brand rates it a 9 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Despite that, it doesn't feel harsh or uncomfortable. The premium construction impressed our Lab's fiber scientists and material engineers, who highlight the attention to details and craftsmanship.
This level of firmness is best suited for stomach sleepers, larger body types, and anyone who prefers sleeping on top of their mattress rather than sinking into it.
What you're getting (and what you're giving up)
It uses a complex coil system that's available in multiple firmness levels, including pillow-top options so you can get a softer surface while maintaining the strong support underneath. It's also handcrafted with quality materials; we find that it's more well-made than other mattresses on the market.
The sturdy coil system also contributes to excellent edge support. Unlike softer foam mattresses that compress significantly around the perimeter, the Estate feels supportive from edge to edge, making it easier to get in and out of bed. Another perk: It's widely available in mattress stores, so it's easy to try in person before committing.
The biggest tradeoff is pressure relief. While many testers loved the support, side sleepers, lighter body weights, and people with back pain may prefer a softer foam or hybrid mattress.
Why it costs more than other mattresses
Stearns & Foster's model is one of the pricier mattresses we recommend, but the cost makes more sense when you consider how it's built. While many online mattresses are made to ship compressed in a box, this is a more substantial, traditional mattress with a complex coil system, high-quality materials and handcrafted construction. Several testers specifically called out the craftsmanship and materials as reasons it felt like an upgrade over previous mattresses they'd owned.
One reason for the higher price is Stearns & Foster's proprietary IntelliCoil system. Unlike a traditional innerspring, each coil contains a smaller coil inside. The outer coil responds to lighter pressure, while the inner coil provides support as weight is applied. In real-world use, that means the mattress adapts to different body types and maintains its support based on the pressure.
Beyond that, this mattress is compatible with adjustable beds, which isn't the case with stiffer innersprings. The price also includes in-home delivery and setup.
What our testers said
We reviewed feedback from more than 150 Stearns & Foster owners, and this mattress was especially popular among those who prefer a firm sleep surface. Users frequently told us they appreciated how stable the mattress felt throughout the night and how well it held up over time
Many told us the support was the biggest improvement compared to previous mattresses. One tester said the mattress felt "thicker and firmer, and seems to have more support," while another told us, "I like how firm this mattress is as well as the quality of the outer material."
RELATED: The Best Firm Mattresses
- Unique coil system is firm, but it adapts to different body types
- Excellent edge support for getting in and out of bed
- Handcrafted and durable for long-term use
- Less pressure relief for side sleepers and people with back pain
9) Avocado Green Mattress
Choose this if you want organic
This mattress is great choice for two reasons: It's made with certified organic materials, and it has a completely different feel than memory foam. Latex is more resilient and responsive, so instead of sinking into the mattress, you'll feel more like you're floating on top of it.
This model in particular combines these features with strong comfort and support scores from our testers, especially compared to other latex mattresses we've tested. It also has coils underneath that give it a more supportive feel. Our testers and people we've surveyed who own this mattress say it distributes their body weight well.
The certifications are from the Global Organic Textile Standard ( GOTS ) and the Global Organic Latex Standard ( GOLS ), which are among the most widely recognized standards for organic bedding and the ones we rely on for validation. It also earned our Good Housekeeping Seal , meaning we stand behind it with our two-year limited warranty.
What you're getting (and what you're giving up)
This is a hybrid mattress with latex on top and coils underneath. In my experience, this is often the perfect combination for latex because an all-latex mattress can be extremely heavy and expensive. The hybrid construction helps balance comfort, support, and practicality.
The feel is noticeably different from a memory foam hybrid. Instead of slowly contouring around your body, the latex provides gentle cushioning while keeping you lifted on the surface. It feels more responsive and easier to move around on.
Latex is also typically more durable than memory foam. My daughter has slept on this mattress for the past six years, and it still looks and feels as good as new. I originally chose it because I preferred having a young child on an organic mattress, but over time I've become just as impressed by its comfort and durability.
The biggest tradeoff is price. Latex is more expensive than memory foam, so most latex mattresses cost more than comparable foam models. Motion isolation also isn't quite as strong because both latex and coils have more bounce. And because latex is denser than memory foam, the mattress itself feels heavy to maneuver.
Why the latex feels different than most mattresses
Most shoppers are familiar with memory foam because it's become the dominant mattress material over the past decade. Latex feels completely different. Instead of creating a deep, body-hugging sensation, it provides a more buoyant, responsive feel while still offering pressure relief.
It's also firmer than many of the boxed mattresses we recommend, with 8 out of 10 rating on the brand's firmness scale. If you prefer a softer feel, you can opt for the Medium or Plush levels (but the softer the firmness level, the pricier it gets!). Beyond comfort, latex is generally considered a higher-quality and longer-lasting material than memory foam, making it a worthwhile investment for shoppers prioritizing durability.
What our testers said
One survey respondent summed it up best: "I like that it's made of organic and natural materials, that it's extremely comfortable, and that it's held up even after years."
Comfort, support, and durability were the themes that came up most often across our testing and survey feedback. Testers appreciated how evenly the mattress distributed their body weight and how supportive it felt. One user told us, "The mattress is very comfortable, conforms to your body, and has bounce," while another said, "It is very firm like a good solid hug, but at the same time conforms to you and embraces you."
The mattress also stood out for its craftsmanship. Because it doesn't rely on synthetic adhesives, the layers are hand-tufted together. Several long-term owners specifically highlighted how well it held up over time.

10) How we test mattresses

I started testing mattresses in 2014, and that work has grown over the years with my team at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab . We evaluate mattresses on an ongoing basis , collecting both initial feedback and long-term insightsto ensure they feel great to sleep on all night, even in the long-term.
We begin with the fiber scientists and engineers in the Lab, who review materials, specs, features, and performance claims from the brands. Our analysts stay up-to-date on what's happening in the mattress industry by visiting showrooms, factories, and events throughout the year. We also research whether there are consistent complaints from consumer and make note of any quality or customer service issues. Brands with red flags are eliminated from consideration.
After that, we test mattresses firsthand, both with our product analysts and our at-home testers. We use a screening survey to match testers to mattresses, ensuring the model they receive is a proper fit for their sleep needs. Our testers are given detailed instructions and complete in-depth surveys with both quantitative ratings and open-ended feedback. We check in after several weeks, then again after a year or even longer, to get a sense of durability and long-term satisfaction.
On top of that, we've surveyed our consumer tester panel about the mattresses they've purchased on their own. We've gathered insights from more than 10,000 mattress users, analyzing responses to over 170,000 questions.
Here's what we evaluate when rating each mattress:
11)

Ordering, delivery, and setup
We review the overall shopping experience, delivery speed, and any issues that arise, including how responsive and helpful customer service is if any problems occur. If it's a DIY setup, testers describe how easy the mattress is to unbox, move, and position. If it's white-glove delivery, they weigh in on the experience with scheduling and in-home setup. We also consider how quickly it expands to its full shape.
12)

Sleep Tester Feedback
Our testers give ratings for comfort and support,as well as how much they enjoyed sleeping on the mattress initially and over time. They also report how well they maintain a comfortable body temperaturewhile sleeping on the mattress. Beyond that, they provide firmness ratingsso we can compare real-world feel to the brand's specification. and they check for edge supportto see if the sides compress under pressure.
13)

Detailed Insights
We measure overall satisfaction, perceived impact on sleep quality, and whether testers wake up feeling sore. They also reveal how the mattress compares with previous beds they've owned. After that, testers share detailed, open-ended responses about what they like, dislike, and any other comments they have to share as part of their comprehensive review.
14) Mattress Shopping Guide

Start with the mattress type
This is the biggest decision you'll make because it determines how the mattress will feel. You can often find different firmness levels available for each type of mattress.
-
Memory foam:This is the most popular type of mattress on the market. It's made of synthetic foams and provides exceptional pressure relief. The foam adapts to your body shape so you feel like you're being cradled, making it great for side sleepers or people with back pain. Just note that memory foam is known to trap heat and isn't as durable as other materials.
-
Innerspring (or coils):Primarily made up of metal springs on the inside, they're usually firmer, have more bounce, and tend to be more durable than other mattress types. Plus, innersprings allow for more breathability so they often sleep cooler. These mattresses are ideal for stomach sleepers and heavier body weights.

Latex:It offers more cushioning than innersprings, but it's more resilient than foam, making you feel more like you're lying on top of the mattress instead of sinking-in. Latex is made from the sap of rubber trees and may be used in organic mattresses, so they're also ideal for eco-conscious shoppers. The downside is latex is typically more expensive, heavier to maneuver, and may be too firm for some.

Hybrid:These combine memory foam or latex and coils for the benefits (and downsides) of both. The surface uses foam for comfort, while the bottom incorporates the coils for support. Hybrids tend to be more expensive than their all-foam counterparts.

Factor in your sleep position and body type
The goal is to keep your spine in neutral alignment, so factoring in how you sleep can help narrow down your search. Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress, side sleepers should opt for a softer surface to avoid stress on the pressure points like your shoulders, hips, and knees, and back sleepers (and anyone who changes positions) would fall somewhere in between at a medium firmness.
Body type matters, too. Heavier bodies need a firmer bed for support, while lightweight frames are better suited with a softer mattress.
16)

Consider the height
Mattress height affects both comfort and convenience, and most models fall between 10 and 15 inches tall. Shorter mattresses (around 10 to 11 inches) are often easier to maneuver (because they're lighter in weight) and may cost less. Taller mattresses (14 inches and higher) tend to feel more luxurious because they can incorporate additional comfort layers, and they may be easier to get in and out of. Just keep in mind that taller mattresses are typically heavier, more expensive and may require deep-pocket sheets.
Don't get too hung up on sales
One thing I've learned after more than a decade of testing mattresses: Most brands are almost always running some sort of promotion. Rather than focusing on the advertised percentage discount, pay attention to the actual selling price. A 40% discount isn't necessarily a better deal than a 15% discount if the final price is higher.
17)

Pay attention to delivery and trial periods
DIY setup typically means you get the mattress faster and set it up at your convenience. Full-service setup (also called white-glove delivery) means you'll schedule an outside company to deliver it, set it up in your desired room, and typically haul away your old mattress if you'd like.
\Opt for a mattress with a lenient return policy that gives you at least 30 nights to get a refund, though 90 or more is ideal. Trials matter more than warranties:You can return a mattress during the trial for almost any reason, while warranties only cover manufacturer defects, which can be difficult to prove. Always check for return fees or pickup requirements before buying.
Understand certifications
If the mattress is made with foam, look for third-party certifications like CertiPUR-US (all of our foam recommendations have it) or GreenGuard to ensure low chemical emissions. If a brand makes organic claims, check for certifications like Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). Keep in mind: memory foam can't be "natural" or "organic," no matter how it's marketed.
18) Why trust Good Housekeeping?

Scientists have been evaluating home products the Good Housekeeping Institute for over 125 years. For the past 12 years (since the online mattress industry took off), the GH Institute Textiles Lab has been testing dozens of new models each year to identify the ones worth recommending.
Lexie Sachs is the executive director of testing strategy and operations at the Good Housekeeping Institute. She has been researching and reviewing mattresses for over a decade. Over the years, she's evaluated dozens of models, met directly with brands, surveyed thousands of mattress owners, and facilitated hands-on consumer testing. She's also personally slept on a wide range of boxed mattresses across different price points, materials, and delivery methods.

Grace Wu , senior textiles analyst, currently oversees mattress testing at the GH Institute. She evaluates mattresses herself, coordinates at-home testing, and analyzes long-term consumer feedback. Before joining Good Housekeeping over four years ago, Wu earned a master of engineering in materials science and engineering and a bachelor of science in fiber science from Cornell University.
Together, we combine technical understanding, hands-on testing results, and large-scale consumer data to determine which mattresses perform best for sleepers of all needs.
