Say what you will about cooling bed sheets , but if you ask me, there's nothing better at the end of a long day than slipping into 100% cotton sheets . Made from long-staple fibers, the best percale sheets feel crisp and cool, ideal for hot sleepers. You'll often find these sheets in luxury hotels, but you don't have to pay five-star prices for breathable bedding.

I credit my mom with passing down my discerning eye for cotton percale sheets — she was a stickler for excellent quality, superior softness, and thoughtful details like continuous elastic on fitted sheets and perfect edging on pillow cases. For this story, my colleagues and I tested a dozen percale sheet sets over several months, sleeping on each for multiple nights and then washing and drying them to see how they held up. My top picks range from affordable to splurge-worthy and come in a wide range of colors and patterns to match your bedroom's aesthetic.

Best percale sheets of 2026

Lisa Schweitzer/Yahoo

Sizes:Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King | Color:Light gray (shown), ivory, and white | Max mattress depth:Up to 15" | Care instructions:Machine wash, tumble dry low

Why they're great:An absolute pleasure to sleep on, these sheets from The Linen Company (previously Sweave) felt soft and durable, and even better, they never got too hot. The lightweight and breathable fabric feels almost as buttery as sateen cotton, but without any of the warmth. Of the 60-plus bed sheets Yahoo home editors and I tested, this one took first place for percale.

When I unpacked the set, I noticed that the fitted sheet had an additional elastic strap at each corner. These straps go under the mattress, securing it and thereby easing my job of keeping that corner of the sheet on while getting the rest of the sheet in place. There were also handy tags denoting the short and long sides of the sheet. Thoughtful details like this are a game-changer for solo bed-making.

Minor criticisms:The only change I detected after a couple of wash-and-dry cycles was minor shrinkage. It's also worth noting that these sheets can vary in price, sometimes falling even lower than our best budget option. Different colors, even in the same size, may cost different amounts.

Pros
  • Affordable
  • Soft, yet crisp and lightweight
  • Fitted sheet has extra elastic strap to keep it in place
  • Available on Amazon
Cons
  • Minor shrinkage
  • Limited colors offered

Sizes:Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King | Color:Sand (shown; no longer available), Navy, Dusty Olive, White, Toffee and 12 more | Max mattress depth:Up to 16" | Care instructions:Machine wash cool, tumble dry low

Why they're great:For $100, you can't beat the quality of these percale sheets, which I found to be even more comfortable than an almost-identical Brookinen set (both have a similar thread count and are made in India from long-staple cotton). The Quince sheets feel incredibly cool and crisp, particularly during hot summer nights.

I liked the lightweight feel of this breathable bedding, and when I evaluated it right out of the package and again after washing, the fabric wasn't flimsy or too thin. You can purchase the set with or without a top sheet, which is a bonus for those who prefer to go straight to a duvet and are usually stuck with extra sheets they won't use. It also knocks the price down to just $70.

It's also worth pointing out that these sheets are labeled Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified — meaning they meet strict guidelines for growing practices and production methods. That earned them the award of best affordable organic cotton sheets in our buying guide.

Minor criticisms:I noticed some sloppy stitching at the corners of the sheets, but it did not worsen with washing. It would also be nice to have a few brighter shades in the color range.

Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Cool to the touch
  • Soft, yet crisp
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton
Cons
  • Stitching at corners is a bit sloppy

Jessica Dodell-Feder/Yahoo

Sizes:Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King | Color:Cloud gray, white, ivory, powder blue | Max mattress depth:Up to 15" | Care instructions:Machine wash warm, tumble dry on medium

Why they're great:While I am partial to 100% cotton, our best cooling sheets overall from Molecule take things up a notch for anyone who runs hot. The fabric blends long-staple cotton with Tencel, a semi-synthetic fabric also known as lyocell, which is highly moisture-wicking.

Lead Home Editor Jessica Dodell-Feder can attest that this set offers the best of both worlds: the breathability of cotton and the moisture-wicking of Tencel. "I tend to sweat sleeping under sheets made solely from lyocell, viscose and other semi-synthetic fabrics. I had zero issues with Molecule's bedding and always found a cool spot if I got warm at night."

Made from 52% cotton and 48% Tencel, these sheets look and feel as crisp as traditional percale. Though they're somewhat stiff at first, they became softer after multiple rounds in the washer and dryer, reports Dodell-Feder. The fitted sheet has convenient labels indicating the top/bottom to help with making the bed.

Minor criticisms:You may notice more wrinkles on these sheets. If that is the case, the brand recommends promptly removing them from the dryer and using a warm iron. Dodell-Feder also adds that the fitted sheet was snug on her 12-inch-thick mattress.

Pros
  • Crisp and cool to the touch
  • High-quality fabric is thick yet breezy
  • Labels on the fitted sheet help speed up bed-making
  • Comes in a wide range of sizes
Cons
  • Fitted sheet is a bit snug, so may not work for thick mattresses
  • Prone to wrinkles

Lisa Schweitzer/Yahoo

Sizes:Full, Queen, King, Cal King | Color:Olive (shown), Warm Gray, Ivory, Aegean, White and 5 more | Max mattress depth:Up to 14" | Care instructions:Machine wash warm, tumble dry low

Why they're great:If organic fabrics are important to you, these sheets are the answer. Many brands claim to offer organic sheets, but The Citizenry has a GOTS certification . The brand's cotton percale sheets were also some of the coolest ones I tried over a humid summer.

I don't know if it's the subliminal effect of having "stonewashed" in the name, but these felt airy and light, yet soft and durable. They felt like a favorite well-worn button-down shirt even after going through the washer and dryer. There was ample airflow, and according to my testing, they showed signs of good moisture-wicking abilities.

Minor criticisms:The Citizenry color palette really dovetails with the stonewashed vibe, with muted (but not earthy) tones. I could see decorating a bedroom around its seaside-inspired shades, but the available hues may not be everyone's cup of tea.

Pros
  • Smooth, soft feel
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton
  • Uniform stitching, hemmed flat sheet
Cons
  • Will not fit mattresses taller than 14 inches
  • On the pricier side before sales

Sizes:Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King | Color:Shore (shown), Pewter, Cream, Dusty Rose, Mineral and 18 more | Max mattress depth:Up to 17" | Care instructions:Machine wash cold on gentle cycle, tumble dry medium

Why they're great:Boll & Branch's percale sheets felt different from most in the testing pool — dare I say they're the percale sheets for people who love sateen? I attribute this to their thickness and slight sheen. They have a decadent look and feel that makes sleeping on them truly enjoyable and earned them a top spot in our guide to the best luxury sheets .

Though I am a fan of percale's crispness, I also appreciated this bedding's slightly more substantive weight. The fitted sheet has a 17-inch deep pocket, which means it will easily fit even the loftiest mattresses, and making the bed is a snap. High-end details include an extra-wide 7-inch hem on the pillow cases and the flat sheet.

Like Quince, Boll & Branch also offers the Percale Hemmed Sheet Set without a flat sheet , which brings the price to a smidge under $190. While both brands claim their sheets are made from 100% organic cotton, Boll & Branch takes the extra step with its Fair Trade Certified practices.

Minor criticisms:The sheets are generously sized, which may feel unnecessary at first but accounts for minor shrinkage after a few wash-and-dry cycles. These luxury sheets are also some of the most expensive I tested.

Pros
  • Luxurious feel
  • Saturated colors — and lots of them
  • Fitted sheets accommodate up to a 17" mattress
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton
  • Fair Trade Certified manufacturer
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Minor shrinkage

Factors to consider when choosing percale sheets

Percale sheets are woven from long-staple cotton. This enhances the fabric's breathability and creates its crisp texture and cool feel. Here is what else to look for in percale sheets:

✓ Thread count:Percale sheets tend to feature a 200 to 400 thread count. A higher number does not necessarily mean better , and some brands may even inflate thread count. What matters most is the quality of the long-staple fibers used to create the fabric.

✓ Feel:Percale sheets are considered some of the coolest due to an airy, crisp feel that hot sleepers swear by. Some feel rougher than others at the onset, but the material does get softer with time and repeated washing and drying. If your family prefers cozier bedding, you may want to try sateen sheets or flannel sheets .

✓ Durability:Percale's tight weave makes it quite durable. We found that only one of the 12 sheet sets we tested seemed flimsy in construction. Because most percale sheets are machine washable, you also want a set that can maintain its crisp, airy appearance. Bonus points if there are only a few wrinkles after going through the washer and dryer, but that's generally only possible if you fold them right away.

✓ Price:Percale sheets vary tremendously in price. Our testing pool ranged from under $60 to over $200 for a queen-size set. Our No. 1 pick from The Linen Company falls somewhere in the middle at $80, a sweet spot for quality and affordability.

How we tested percale sheets

Because we tested these sheets at home, using our own washers and dryers and sleeping on them in our own beds, we wanted to get a professional take on how best to gauge quality, durability and more without the benefit of professional equipment or a lab. We consulted three fabric experts: Kim Romine, a fabric care scientist at P&G ; Liz Eggert, a senior textile scientist at P&G Fabric Care ; and Meredith McQuerry, associate professor and director of the ThermaNOLE Comfort Lab and Textile Testing Laboratory at Florida State University . To rank on this list, the sheets had to excel in the following:

  • First impressions:I carefully surveyed each set of percale sheets upon arrival, taking note of design elements, softness and coolness, as well as excessive wrinkling, loose threads, snags and any other imperfections. I also measured the pillow cases from each set and set one aside as a control for post-laundry assessments.

  • Spill test:I used a dropper to apply the same amount of water to a sheet from each set to gauge how well it might handle the occasional spill or moisture. The quicker the water absorbed and spread, the better the indicator of moisture-wicking.

  • Laundry test:I put each set of sheets through one cycle in the washer and dryer after opening it, and again after my sleep test, following the label's care instructions. I then reassessed them for any signs of wear, as well as shrinking or color fading.

  • Sleep test:I made my bed with each set to confirm that its various pieces easily and securely fit my pillows and mattress. I slept on the sheets for three nights straight to see how well they stayed put, keeping notes regarding softness and breathability.

I didn't just sleep on the job, I also checked each sheet's moisture-wicking capabilities.

Other percale sheets we tested

Brooklinen Classic Core Percale Set :I didn't love the feel of these sheets — they were a bit rougher than others I tried, though still very cool and breathable. Like the Quince set, they're made with 100% long-staple cotton and feature a 270 thread count, but they weren't as soft and cost almost twice as much. That said, I appreciate that they come in 20-plus colors and patterns, so you're bound to find something that works with your decor — and they often go on sale with significant discounts.

L.L. Bean Pima Cotton Percale Sheet Set :L.L. Bean has always been synonymous with quality and durability, and its 100% long-staple pima cotton sheets do not disappoint. Available in 11 colors, they're a solid pick for anyone who values function and softness over breathability. I would not recommend these for hot sleepers, though.

Target Threshold Organic Percale Sheet Set :I've owned the Target Threshold Solid Performance Sheets (which are sateen, not percale), for the past five years, and have had an overall pretty positive experience. So I had high hopes for these very reasonably priced Target sheets. They were fairly disappointing in their look and feel. They were rough, scratchy and thin and generally not enjoyable to sleep on. They were also quite wrinkly after washing and drying. Their best feature is the extra elastic band midway down the fitted sheet pocket, which helps keep them from creeping off the mattress.

Parachute Percale Sheet Set :These were a close second to our best percale sheets for hot sleepers. Their cool, lightweight feel comes from 100% long-staple cotton fibers that allow for good airflow on warm nights. The pillowcases are available with either a traditional side opening or a flat back envelope, which completely encases the pillow and gives it a more polished look.

Coyuchi Organic Crinkled Percale Sheets :The Coyuchi sheet set is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and has a rumpled look. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment, not just because it is extremely wrinkly, but also because they were the roughest percale sheets we tried. The sheets are available in 16 colors and patterns, and the fitted sheet can accommodate up to a 16-inch mattress.

Saatva Organic Percale Sheet Set :Saatva's percale sheets are made from 100% long-staple cotton with a 200 thread count. They should tick all your boxes at a little over $200 for a queen-size set, and they do look crisp and polished out of the packaging. But once I washed them, it was nearly impossible to reclaim that look. The sheets are lightweight and breathable, but not particularly soft and quite wrinkly.

I also have a set of percale sheets from The Company Store , which I'll be testing soon.

Percale sheet FAQs

What is the best thread count for percale sheets?

While our best percale sheets have thread counts between 270 and 400, you have to take this number with a grain of salt. "It's worth paying attention when you're buying cotton sheets because it gives you a general idea of density," says Dallas-based interior designer Amy Switzer . "But beyond a certain point, thread count becomes more of a marketing gimmick than a measure of quality."

What's the difference between percale and pima?

Kym Maas, chief creative officer at Lands' End , clears the confusion: "Pima cotton is a type of fiber; percale refers to the way it's woven. Pima makes bedding soft, percale makes it crisp." A percale sheet's fibers are woven one over, one under, which results in a more matte look. Pima cotton's fibers are extra-long and are grown in Peru and other countries where pima cotton seeds are planted.

Which is better: percale vs. sateen sheets?

It comes down to personal preference. "Percale is crisp, smooth, and breathable. It's great for warm sleepers who want to feel cooler. If you want something with a subtle sheen and silky feel, then sateen is for you," explains Maas.

Update, August 11, 2026: We checked all product prices and availability. Our No. 1 pick remains unchanged, but we added a percale sheet set from Molecule for hot sleepers and gave new superlatives to The Citizenry and Boll & Branch bedding. We also incorporated additional expert insight on thread count.

We received complimentary samples of some products and purchased others ourselves, but we reviewed all products using the same objective criteria.
