How's this for a hot take: The flavor of fall isn't pumpkin spice — it's Buffalo sauce. After all, you can't have chicken wings without this delectable orange-red condiment, and now that football season has officially kicked off, what else would you even put on the menu? Many brands claim to make the best store-bought Buffalo sauce, so I decided to put eight options to the test. I loaded up on plain wings and celery, then I gathered a dozen staffers at Yahoo's New York City headquarters for a brand-concealed tasting. And I've got to be, ahem, frank with you: The results really surprised me.
In this story
As a longtime fan of a certain iconic hot sauce brand, I fully expected it to take top honors. While it had a very strong showing, our panel's pick for the best bottled Buffalo sauce of 2026 edged it out on texture. The winner is dippable yet thin enough to cling beautifully to wings … or whatever else you want to eat it with ( pizza, anyone?).
Best Buffalo sauce for 2026
Heat level:Medium | Sodium per serving:300mg | Key ingredients:Water, organic distilled white vinegar, organic red jalapeno pepper puree, organic butter
This sauce earned the top spot in our taste test, thanks to its “dippable” texture, an accolade given by four of our panelists. "Thick enough to cling, but not too thick," noted one. As for the flavor, it performed solidly (though not as well as Frank's). People liked its vinegary tang and the fact that it has a discernible kick. Most also thought it looked tasty, with visible flecks of spice. It's worth noting that this Buffalo sauce is USDA-certified organic and lower in sodium than many of the others we tried.
Score: 13.5/20
Heat level:Mild | Sodium per serving:420mg | Key ingredients:Distilled vinegar, aged cayenne red peppers, salt, water, canola oil
It doesn't get more classic than Frank's, and this bottle recieved top marks for flavor. It tastes noticeably like vinegar with just a hint of heat, ideal if you have a low spice tolerance. "This is a classic," raved one tester; another wrote, "This flavor is very nostalgic for me — buttery, vinegary and not very spicy at all." Frank's also beat out the competition for overall enjoyment, with commenters noting its versatility. "If your wings are coated in sauce, this is a good option," wrote one. Others said they’d eat it with eggs, sandwiches, chili or fries or mix it with ranch dressing . Where it struggled was consistency: The majority of testers thought it was too runny (it's similar in texture to Frank's original hot sauce ).
Score: 13.2/20
Heat level:Mild/medium | Sodium per serving:1,070mg | Key ingredients:Water, cayenne red pepper, soybean oil, salt, egg yolk
Is it any surprise that our top pick for wings comes from a restaurant chain that's named after the very dish? This vibrant orange sauce won over testers for its not-too-thick, not-too-thin consistency and mouth-puckering taste. Most testers also agreed it had a pleasant level of spice. "Once I got used to it, I liked it. It has a vinegary tang that would hold up to wings," wrote one. Several others also said they'd use the sauce specifically on wings, but wished it packed more flavor. This comment probably sums it up best: "This feels like a classic Buffalo sauce, perfect for wings or a salad. But it's one-note."
Score: 13.1/20
Heat level:Medium | Sodium per serving:520mg | Key ingredients:Cayenne pepper puree, water, distilled vinegar, butter, Worcestershire sauce
This sauce from a small Southern barbecue restaurant chain was one of the pricier options we tested, but it has a thick, creamy texture and tastes faintly of ranch or blue cheese dressing. That might sound odd, but it makes it an ideal ingredient in a Buffalo chicken dip. A few testers said they liked the sauce more the more they ate it: "It has a slow burn that builds and packs a punch," one proclaimed. Speaking of spice, this was one of the spiciest Buffalo sauces we tried, falling at the high end of the "medium" range. "The flavor is solid — out of all the hot sauces I tried, this is the one with the most kick to it, which helps elevate the overall taste," added another tester.
Score: 13/20
Heat level:Mild | Sodium per serving:400mg | Key ingredients:Cayenne pepper sauce, avocado oil, organic vinegar
I also don’t typically associate “healthy” with Buffalo sauce, but among the options we tested, this is the way to go if you’re looking for one lower in sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol. Instead of butter — a key ingredient in many recipes — Primal Kitchen's sauce uses avocado oil. The result was somewhat polarizing (some testers described it as having a classic Buffalo sauce flavor, whereas others thought it lacked depth). Most, however, agreed it had a more natural orange color, and many testers said they'd gladly put it on wings. "I would eat this with wings, but I would not dip my pizza in it," one panelist specified.

How we tested Buffalo sauce
I started by researching the most popular Buffalo sauces, focusing on options sold nationally in grocery stores or online. The final lineup included a mix of butter- and oil-based sauces in a range of spice levels. Then came the fun part: gathering a dozen of my colleagues at Yahoo's New York City office for a taste test. Most participants were self-proclaimed Buffalo or hot sauce lovers, but we also included a few people who weren't big fans of either.

We labeled each sample with a letter so no one knew what brand they were tasting.
(Jessica Dodell-Feder/Yahoo)I ordered several dozen plain wings and bags of celery sticks and completely masked each bottle with painter's tape, labeling them only with a letter. The testers tasted the samples and scored them from 1 to 5 (with 5 being the best) for flavor, appearance, texture and consistency, and overall enjoyment, for a total of 20 points. They also weighed in on how spicy they thought each sauce was and added general comments. I averaged the scores in each category, added them up and took into account everyone's comments, as well as the sauces' nutrition info and ingredients to come up with this list of the best Buffalo sauces.
Other Buffalo sauces we tested
Truff Buffalo Sauce :"Something sinister is going on with this flavor," wrote one tester of this mild sauce from the truffle-focused condiment brand. All could detect the truffle right away, and most did not enjoy it, though one fan proclaimed, "I could tell there was truffle in there right away, and I am obsessed!"
Sweet Baby Ray's Buffalo Wing Sauce :Another mild option — from the famous barbecue sauce purveyors — scored poorly on taste and overall enjoyment. Most testers thought the sauce had a slightly artificial flavor and looked too bright orange.
Kinder's Buttery Buffalo Wing Sauce & Dip :Our testers could not agree on how this one tasted: Some thought it was fruity, some thought it was cheesy, and still others considered it smoky. The clingy consistency was mostly a win, but this sauce still scored the lowest of the bunch.
Buffalo wing must-haves
This clever gadget makes dousing your wings in Buffalo sauce as easy as squeezing a bottle. Simply fill 'er up using the included funnel, then twist on the silicone basting brush cap. The built-in spout ensures the sauce will continuously flow as you cover every nook and cranny of your wings.
One of our top picks for the best kitchen tongs , this set from Hotec features a nonslip grip and hanging loop. For less than $10, they're a no-brainer, says our tester, especially because they won't scratch nonstick or other coated cookware the way stainless steel utensils can.
There's a place and time for a football-themed platter — and it's now, at your house. At nearly 17 inches long and 10.6 inches wide, the board has enough room for at least a dozen wings, plus a small bowl of your favorite Buffalo sauce for dipping. It also comes with a clear, lockable lid, so you can easily haul your spread to a party or tailgate.
The best air fryer we've ever tested, this stainless steel model boasts substantial cooking room, minimal maintenance and an easy-to-master learning curve, all while looking awfully sleek. It can hold up to three pounds of wings at a time, and there's even a preset, so you don't have to guess how long to cook them. We especially appreciate the toss reminder which helps keep everything crisp.
We received complimentary samples of some products and purchased others ourselves, but we reviewed all products using the same objective criteria.
