Overwhelmed by the sheer number of options? These totes, backpacks and more offer plenty of expert-recommended picks.
Our experts independently review everything we recommend. If you buy through our links, we may earn commission.
People say things like, "You're only as good as the people around you," but personally, I feel that way about my work bag. Hear me out. I expect my office tote to carry a lot of important stuff — laptop, water bottle, lunch, sneakers, keys, phone, wallet, headphones
... you get the idea. If it's slipping off my shoulder or ripping at the seams? I might as well head home.
So, in the name of service journalism, I've put together the ultimate list of the best work bags of 2026. I started by polling our entire team, most of whom carry a very large and heavy 16-inch MacBook Pro to the office each week, on the purses and totes that make that schlep possible. Then we tested the most intriguing picks for size, durability, structure and style, along the way asking questions like: Were the straps thick enough to be comfortable? Did a tight fit make it impossible to fish your keys out at the end of the day? Was the zipper smooth as butter or did it get stuck? In the end, we narrowed down the picks to 11 options for a range of budgets. So, whether you're an unpaid intern (been there) or someone with cash to spare, you'll find something on the list for you.

Best work bags for women in 2026
Material: Nylon and vegan leather trim | Dimensions: 14"H x 6.5"W x 12"L | Colors: 3 | Closure: Zipper and magnetic | Laptop sleeve: No | Laptop compatibility: Up to 14"
Why we love it:This bag is structured, not too heavy, holds a ton and yet doesn't look gigantic on the shoulder. It comes with a shoulder strap, a crossbody strap and three compartments to conveniently sort your belongings. You can easily fit a laptop and water bottle, of course, but then also perhaps a book, a packed lunch and a pair of sneakers. The world is your oyster!
What our pros say:I had previously tried the Beis Work Tote and was fairly disappointed that it looked a lot cheaper in person and felt awkward on the shoulder due to thin straps. But the brand has 100% redeemed itself in my eyes with the sleek Commuter Tote. It looks chic, can hold everything I need for the work day, the straps are substantial, and the material feels high-quality enough to withstand daily wear and tear.
Keep in mind:The brand says this bag fits up to a 13-inch laptop but I was able to easily zip it up with my 14-inch MacBook. I could even fit my 16-inch laptop comfortably inside, but I wasn't able to zip or magnetically close the bag over it.
- Manageable size that fits a lot
- Trolley sleeve
- Water bottle pocket and key leash
- Structured
- Water-repellant
- Top will not close over a 16" laptop
Material: 100% cotton canvas | Dimensions: 22.5"W x 9.5"D x 17"H | Colors: 16 | Closure: Open top or zip top | Laptop sleeve: No | Laptop compatibility: Up to 16"
Why we love it:If you've spent any time on the East Coast — or the internet — you've probably seen this tote. Don't sleep on it as a work bag. It's durable and reliable, and you can choose between an open or a zipped top, as well as customize your preferred handle length. A built-in ring to help you locate your keys in a snap is a nice bonus.
What our pros say:I own several of these canvas totes in different colors and with various monograms and customizations, and I can confirm that they hold up like a dream. They don't look overly large but, shockingly, hold my gigantic 16-inch laptop nicely!
Keep in mind:There's no internal padding or dedicated laptop sleeve, so I'd recommend getting a case for your laptop before putting it into your bag. Opting for the zip-top version will also help with keeping your devices secure.
- Affordable and durable
- Fits a 16" laptop
- Super customizable
- No dedicated laptop sleeve
Material: Polyamide and Russian leather | Dimensions: 12.2"L x 11.8"H x 7.5"W | Colors: 8 | Closure: Zipper | Laptop sleeve: No | Laptop compatibility: Up to 16"
Why we love it:Ahh, the Le Pliage. The Longchamp bag has been beloved for decades and has recently seen a resurgence in popularity — and for good reason. This chic bag can fold up into a small square, plus it's durable, spacious enough for a large laptop and uber-light at just 0.76 pounds. If your ideal work bag includes a bunch of pockets, this is not that. But, Assistant Editor Isabelle Paquette shared a sneaky tip: "Buy a Longchamp-sized felt pocket insert on Amazon! Mine blends right in and helps my belongings not get jostled around inside my bag."
What our pros say:Step onto any subway in NYC and you'll see a woman, on her way to work, carrying a loaded Le Pliage. That includes Yahoo staffers. Senior Deals Writer Rebecca Carhart , for example, has owned one for five years and says that she's able to fit a 16-inch laptop, an iPad, a water bottle, a change of clothes and other everyday essentials in hers. And I personally love that the leather straps are long enough not to slip off my shoulders!
Keep in mind:My mom gave me a small Longchamp she'd had for over 10 years, and it's starting to show small holes in the corners, which is a known problem with this bag's style. However, the brand has been known to repair them. I also find that the bag is not super structured on its own, so it's easier to dig through when it's filled with stuff.
- Folds up conveniently
- Lightweight yet durable
- Quality leather straps don't slip off shoulders
- Wear starts to show in the corners over time
Material: 100% nylon | Dimensions: 12.5"H x 19"W x 5.5"D | Colors: 12 | Closure: Zipper | Laptop sleeve: Yes | Laptop compatibility: Up to 16"
Why we love it:This bag has no shortage of useful pockets (including a padded laptop compartment) and space to hold everything you might need for a work day and beyond. Senior Style Editor Jessica Teich describes it as "lightweight, roomy and spacious" with the ability to house "far more than it reasonably should without weighing [her] down." Oh, and it comes with a matching mini wristlet that not only holds three cards but also has RFID protection.
What our pros say:"The all-black nylon exterior of this bag is understated and has stayed looking pristine over years of use. It has a nice array of pockets plus a fully zippered closure, which is a must for me as I tend to lose things AND I commute in a busy city," says Teich. "I use it almost daily since it's a perfectly practical, no-nonsense, everyday bag that gets any job done well."
Keep in mind:This isn't the most structured bag. Teich notes that it "crumples into a pile if it's not full, which makes it harder to access different pockets and tricky to find anything you've stowed." Keeping a laptop in the bag actually makes it more usable and easier to maneuver.
- Has a luggage sleeve and laptop pocket
- Fits a ton of things, including a 16" laptop
- Includes matching RFID card case
- Not heavy
- Lacks structure when empty
Material: Polyester | Dimensions: 16"H x 12"W x 7"D | Colors: 18 | Closure: Zipper | Laptop sleeve: Yes | Laptop compatibility: Up to 16"
Why we love it:Did you know that the viral Luka bag actually comes in a backpack version? "I'm a huge fan of Calpak's Luka Duffel , so I figured I'd give the backpack a go. It's made for travel, which also makes it great for my commute to the office," says Gifting Editor Amanda Garrity . Basically, you get all of the best features of the brand's famous duffel (cushy design, multiple pockets, lightweight materials and a shoe compartment), just in a more commute-friendly form.
What our pros say:"There's a pocket for everything — I love the separate laptop compartment, along with the front zippered pocket where I keep my work badge for easy access. It has a designated spot for everything, so I know exactly where everything is at all times," says Garrity. "There's even a secret compartment to hold shoes, if you like to switch out your shoes at the office like I do!"
Keep in mind:The one downside of this bag, Garrity notes, is that the straps eventually dig into her shoulders, especially if she's using it for long periods or carrying something heavy, like a larger laptop.
- Separate shoe compartment
- Lightweight design
- Dedicated, padded laptop sleeve
- 18 color options
- Straps can dig in over time
Material: 80% wool, 20% polyamide | Dimensions: 15.75"H x 12.60"W x 4.33"D | Colors: 1 | Closure: Zipper | Laptop sleeve: Yes | Laptop compatibility: Up to 16"
Why we love it:Is it possible to have a sizable backpack that doesn't wear like a giant protrusion on your back? Wellness Editor Kelli McGrane has been using this backpack for over three years and says it fits everything she needs for work and is still in excellent condition. It has the two typical backpack straps, but can also be carried by the handy top handles.
What our pros say:"Aesthetically, the bag fits my stereotypical Colorado vibe, but it's practical too," says McGrane. "The main zippered compartment features a computer sleeve that's big enough to fit my 16-inch MacBook, computer charger and notebook. I've also used it as a carry-on for travel."
Keep in mind:Because of its slimmer profile, certain items — say, a wide lunch container or a sizeable pair of shoes — may not fit. McGrane also notes that her biggest complaint about this bag is the lack of a water bottle holder.
- Stylish
- Can be worn on your back or held by the top straps
- Four pockets offer decent organization
- No water bottle holder
- Only one color
Material: Vegan leather | Dimensions: 20"L x 12"H x 9"W | Colors: 6 | Closure: Zipper | Laptop sleeve: Yes | Laptop compatibility: Up to 16"
Why we love it:If you're looking for a workhorse bag that does it all — and you aren't afraid of a bigger, bulkier bag — meet the aptly-named Multitasker. It has an impressive number of dedicated pockets for everything from a water bottle to lipstick and keys, making it easy to find what you're looking for.
What our pros say:I've typically found that the larger the bag, the more style you have to sacrifice. But not here! This bag actually looks fairly chic, not to mention how intentionally it was designed. It's ideal for self-proclaimed hoarders like me, since it has enough space for everything you need throughout the day.
Keep in mind:Due to the vegan leather material and sizable dimensions, this bag is on the heavier side — nearly 2 pounds — even before you put anything inside. Add a water bottle, laptop, book and a packed lunch, and you can expect to lug around a decent amount of weight. Also, for a bag with this many pockets and compartments, you'd expect a laptop sleeve, which it sadly doesn't have.
- Removable shoulder strap and luggage sleeve
- Two water bottle holders
- 7 inner pockets
- Feels structured and sturdy
- On the heavier side
- No laptop sleeve
Material: Polyurethane | Dimensions: 16"W x 12.5"H x 5"D | Colors: 9 | Closure: Zippered insert | Laptop sleeve: Yes | Laptop compatibility: Up to 16-17"
Why we love it:Headed on a work trip? Take a bag that pulls double duty as both a personal item for your flight and a chic bag for toting around while on the clock. It comes with a sleek luggage sleeve for easy airport travel, and you can carry it by the top handles or with the adjustable crossbody strap.
What our pros say:I own a 16-inch laptop and can attest that this bag is more than big enough for it. It is so roomy, I probably could have even sized down to a smaller size (the Haven also comes in 14- and 15-inch versions). It has the same sleek look as a briefcase, and I love that it comes with a removable insert to protect and store valuables.
Keep in mind:The Haven bag comes in three sizes. I found that the measurement applies to the insert, but if you plan to store your laptop or tablet outside the insert, you can get away with a smaller size. Note that one downside is that the bag itself doesn't have a zipper — just the insert.
- Super spacious
- Removable insert with storage compartments
- Luggage strap and extra shoulder strap
- Only insert has zipper closure
Material: Knit made from recycled plastic bottles | Dimensions: 12.6"H x 20.9"W x 6.1"D | Colors: 5 | Closure: Zipper | Laptop sleeve: No | Laptop compatibility: Up to 16"
Why we love it:If you've ever owned a pair of Rothy's flats, you'll know that one of the best things about them is the fact that you can just stick them in the washing machine and they come out good as new. The same durable, washable construction applies to this Rothy's zip-top tote bag. It comes in five designer-worthy styles.
What our pros say:"This bag is so comfy to carry. It's lightweight, roomy, durable and washable. I also get compliments, with people even stopping me on the subway all the time," says Senior Commerce Writer Kristin Granero . "I own the Night Song shade, and it never looks dirty."
Keep in mind:Granero wishes the inner pocket had a zipper, a feature that some other Rothy's totes have. Also, some reviewers note that it's not super structured when empty. Other than that? "I can't think of any other downsides other than the price, and while it's an investment, it's more than paid off with how often I use it — almost daily," notes Granero.
- Machine washable
- Elevated style options
- Doesn't get or look dirty easily
- Comfortable straps
- Not super structured when empty
- Pricey
Material: Italian leather | Dimensions: 12.5"H x 20.5"W x 5"D | Colors: 7 | Closure: Zipper | Laptop sleeve: No | Laptop compatibility: Up to 16"
Why we love it:While a splurge, a real leather bag in a timeless silhouette like this one will last you for years. Commerce Initiatives Director Jeanine Edwards owned the OG version of this bag for five years and liked it so much that she purchased this updated model with a zipper. She's been using it for a year and a half and counting. It's customizable, with snap-on accessories that you can purchase to attach to the inside of the bag.
What our pros say:"I love the high-quality look and feel of the pebbled leather. It feels expensive and well-made, but it's not so precious like some designer bags that get scratched so easily," notes Edwards. "It's super spacious and I can fit tons inside. I also find the shoulder strap comfy and I don't have issues with it falling down. I also like the simple, classic design. It's not overly trendy, so it won't ever go out of style, but it does come in nice seasonal colors, so it still feels current and modern."
Keep in mind:Besides the higher price point (on par with other leather bags), note this pick isn't lined. Edwards mentioned that she doesn't particularly mind that, but it's worth noting if you prefer a lining.
- Made of Italian leather
- Durable, designed to last for years
- Additional accessories can customize the inside
- Fun, seasonal color options
- Unlined
- Pricey
Material: Italian leather | Dimensions: 10.5"H x 4"D x 12"L | Colors: 1 | Closure: Drawstring | Laptop sleeve: No | Laptop compatibility: Up to 14"
Why we love it:I grew up watching my mom accessorize with Dooney & Bourke bags, and now, as an adult, I completely get the hype. This bag features beautiful and thoughtful details, from the woven texture and metallic keychain to the thick, reinforced shoulder strap and leather drawstring closure. It instantly elevates any outfit I'm wearing from "ehh" to work-ready and gives me the confidence I need to take on the day! Plus, it doesn't look like a work-only bag, so I find myself reaching for it on the weekends too.
What our pros say:I hate having to dig around in a floppy, slouchy, impossible-to-find-anything bag to find my keys at the end of the day. This bag is amazingly structured thanks to the flat bottom and stiff leather, so I never run into that issue. Plus, there's an interior key hook! It's gorgeous and can fit a decent amount.
Keep in mind:Sadly, there is no zipper closure on this bag. I've never had any issues with anything falling out, but it's something to keep in mind if you're traveling with it. And if I carry around my 16-inch work laptop in this bag, it sticks out slightly at the top.
- Impeccable, thoughtful detailing
- Structured and holds a lot
- Elevated design
- Comes with an internal key hook and zip pocket
- Expensive
- No zipper
- Only one color
How we chose the best work bags for women
What better place to kick off work bag recommendations than with our colleagues, who are both product-testing experts and owners and buyers of said bags? We conducted an initial round of research by surveying fellow editors as well as gathering info from customer reviewers and popular suggestions on Instagram, TikTok and Reddit. Then, we reached out to our vast network of industry contacts and interviewed stylists who really know their stuff to get their takes on the most important factors — both aesthetic and functional — to consider when shopping for the ideal work bag.
Once we had our initial testing pool set, we looked at factors like size, structure, durability and style as well as whether or not each bag had key features like comfortable straps, a dedicated laptop compartment, internal pockets and more. We packed up each bag to see what size computer it could accommodate and how heavy it felt with an average work day's worth of items. When all was said and done, we ended up with this list of 11 work bags that we'd recommend to our friends and use regularly ourselves.
Factors to consider when choosing a work bag
Not all bags are equal. Sure, that free tote bag might do the trick for awhile, but if you're looking for a versatile and durable do-it-all hauler that you'll get years of use out of, here are some features and details to keep in mind.
✓ Material:Depending on your budget and the amount of weight you can tolerate on your shoulder, you'll want to choose wisely between the most commonly used materials for work bags. Those include but are not limited to:
-
Leather:"Leather bags are highly sought-after for their durability and longevity, so they're worth investing in if you're able to," says personal stylist Jackie Condura . Leather tends to get better and softer with time if you take good care of it, making it a great investment option. "However, one thing to watch for with leather is the upkeep and care as sometimes the elements can create wear and tear on the bag," Condura notes. Depending on how it's been treated, leather can handle some water, but moisture eventually damages it, so you'll want to try to keep it out of any downpours.
-
Faux leather:A great vegan alternative to real leather, this synthetic option is generally more cost effective. "Faux leather doesn't require as much care or maintenance while still holding up to heavy-duty use," says Condura. "The downside, though, is that it lacks the same level of longevity of use and can be lower in quality."
-
Nylon:If your primary goal is to find something both lightweight and durable, nylon will be your best friend. "Nylon tends to be water- and stain-resistant, as well as easy to wipe clean," adds Condura. "It's a malleable, flexible, strong material, making it well rounded for everyday use. The one downside is that nylon isn't as structured and could look more casual." She recommends the Longchamp Le Pliage — our pick for the best lightweight work bag for women — as a good nylon option.
-
Canvas:Described by Condura as a "workhorse" material, canvas is a practical fabric that's durable, easily washable and typically more affordable. While canvas bags tend to be less structured, they make up for it in versatility and longevity.
✓ Laptop compatibility:The shape of your work bag will determine whether or not it makes for a good laptop carrier. We tested several rectangular styles, both horizontal and vertical, as well as a couple of traditional backpacks and a drawstring bag that could all accommodate a computer. You'll also want to keep an eye out for a bag that has a dedicated laptop sleeve or compartment, often padded to further protect your device.
-
Editor's note:Typically, a brand will list what size laptop fits inside the bag. However during testing, I found that there was often a little more wiggle room than what was stated. A bag that claims to fit a laptop up to 14 inches may actually be able to fit a larger model, as was the case with both Calpak bags as well as the Longchamp Le Pliage. A better way to get a more accurate view is to compare the dimensions of the bag to your laptop size.
✓ Strap size:"Strap width and length can be a personal choice but, generally, thicker and adjustable straps tend to be more comfortable and take the pressure off the shoulder," explains Condura. Interchangeable straps are also a great option for those who want to be able to switch back and forth between a shoulder bag, a crossbody or an option with a top handle.
✓ Organizational features:When your bag is big enough to fit several devices, a change of shoes and a packed lunch, little (yet crucial!) things like a wallet, phone or keys tend to get lost. Internal compartments can make or break your experience with a bag — thankfully, we found tons of options that are designed with water bottle sleeves, key leashes and even a lip balm pocket to make sure you always know where everything is, even in the biggest bag.
Best work bag FAQs
What work bag silhouettes are classics that will never go out of style?
While style can be a personal preference, Condura says that a standard tote bag shape is typically the most popular pick — and a great all-around option. "Your ideal silhouette depends on how much space you need. What's key is to marry style and function in a bag that's structured and keeps things secure and easily accessible," she says. As far as colors: "It's safe to stick to neutral tones like black, tan or cream which tend to work well with everything in most closets," adds celebrity stylist and author Kim Appelt .
What structural features should you look for in a good work bag?
"An ideal bag holds its shape whether it's full or empty," says Appelt. In our testing process, we found that canvas and nylon bags tended to collapse more when empty unless they had an insert or more structured base, whereas leather bags tended to hold up better. And another thing to look for? Good stitching: According to Condura, "thick stitching and well-made craftsmanship is needed to keep the bag strong, especially if there are lots of weighty items held in it."
What's the best way to keep my work bag organized?
"Internal organization matters, so look for pockets and a proper laptop sleeve to keep chaos contained. A polished exterior means nothing if the inside is a black hole," says Appelt. "A great hack for this is buying a bag organizer. There are tons available on Amazon . An insert will allow you to switch totes without having to reorganize each time too."
Assistant Editor Isabelle Paquette shares that there are structured inserts with pockets designed specifically for the dimensions of her favorite work bag, the Longchamp Le Pliage, that are available on Amazon. Hers is under $25 , so it's a no brainer to maximize the organizational capacity of your bag.
