If you're traveling for just two to three days at a time, a weekender bag is all you need to pack a couple of outfits, toiletries and tech. But any old tote or gym bag won't do — not when you can find a weekender bag that features organized compartments, fits where you need it to (under an airplane seat or in the overhead bin as a carry-on ) and is made of materials that won't give out mid-trip.

According to travel blogger Rilee Smith , versatility is key when it comes to weekender bags. "A weekend trip can mean many things," she says. "It can be a road trip, a plane journey or a quick overnight stay. Rather than purchasing multiple different bags that work for all of these different trips, I want one great weekender bag that can work for them all."

We agree, which is why we considered her recommendations and did some of our own digging to find the best weekender bags for every traveler. We found travel duffels that have dedicated shoe compartments, slimmer tote-like styles with luggage sleeves to play nice with your rolling luggage and even wheeled options that'll help you take the load off (literally).

Best weekender bags of 2026

Materials: Canvas | Capacity: 60 L | Size (exterior): 23.6" x 11" x 12.2" | Weight: 1 lb. | Carry options:Handles, crossbody, luggage sleeve | Colors: 6

Why we love it:It's uncommon to find a weekender duffel bag under $100 (and a decent one at that). This duffel is spacious, has handles and a crossbody strap, is made of sturdy canvas and boasts a timeless, rugged style.

What experts say:We like that the bag is made from canvas, a material known for its durability and ability to shrug off heavier loads. Several reviewers called the bag tough, and a majority raved about how it was a good deal for the price. It can expand nearly 3 inches, and according to the brand, the main compartment can hold a 17-inch laptop. We also love that you get tons of exterior zippered pockets, including two side pockets, two front and one back pocket.

Keep in mind:An Amazon reviewer shared that the bag had "no structure, which made filling it difficult" and wished for a stiff bottom to prevent it from caving in.

Pros
  • Affordable
  • Also comes in a 50 L version
  • Available with or without a shoe compartment
  • Has a removable crossbody strap
Cons
  • Won't hold its shape when empty

Materials: Polyester | Capacity: 25 L | Size (exterior): 12" x 16" x 8" | Weight: 2.1 lbs. | Carry options:Handles, crossbody, luggage sleeve | Colors: 12

Why we love it:The Calpak Luka has been recommended to us a few times, by one of our own staffers, a travel expert and thousands of online reviewers (it came up multiple times in our research). The popular pick is lightweight, has a luggage sleeve (a panel of fabric that slides over a suitcase handle for easier transport), nine pockets and a dedicated shoe compartment.

What experts say:Smith calls the Calpak Luka Duffel her tried-and-true travel bag. "I love this bag because it can fit a ton inside thanks to its boxy, rectangular shape; it really allows you to fit as much as possible into all of the deep corners of the bag," she says. "It's also super personal-item friendly, fitting snugly in the airport size bins without any wasted space. You can use it as your under-the-seat bag on many airlines — even budget carriers."

Initiatives Editor Julia Webb is also a fan, and agreed that it can fit all the essentials. She describes it as "thoughtfully designed" and says it also "has an exterior shoe compartment so germ-conscious packers (me!) don't have to worry about dirty kicks touching any clean clothes or accessories." The duffel comes in a bunch of different colors, so it shouldn't be hard to find one that suits your style, and it weighs just over 2 pounds, so it won't burden you as you dash through crowded travel hubs.

Keep in mind:At 25 liters, this bag is a decent size for the essentials, and both Smith and Webb rave about how much they can fit in it. However, if you're someone who likes to overpack (for those just-in-case occasions), you might want to consider a bigger bag.

Pros
  • Can be used as a personal item
  • Popular pick among staffers, experts, and online reviewers
  • Includes shoe compartment
  • Has 9 pockets
Cons
  • On the smaller side

Materials: Nylon or vegan leather | Capacity: 47.5 L | Size (exterior): 19.25" x 10.25" x 14.75" | Weight: 5.18 lbs. (nylon); 5.34 lbs. (vegan leather) | Carry options:Handles, crossbody, luggage sleeve | Colors: 7

Why we love it:If staying organized on the go is important to you, travel influencer Catarina Mello recommends this Monos that has thoughtful organizational features and a shoe compartment at the base that's coated in TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) that's durable, weather-resistant and easy to wipe clean.

What experts say:"It's spacious, with interior pockets for organization, a separate [16-inch] laptop sleeve and a special water-resistant compartment for shoes or wet items," says Mello. Its main compartment features a zippered pocket and a magnetic-close end pocket, along with two side pockets for extra items and a matching drawstring laundry bag. "The best feature? A built-in sleeve that fits over a suitcase handle," says Mello — and it converts into an extra pocket when it's not in use. The sleek bag comes in nylon and vegan leather, and we found both versions are durable and water-resistant.

Keep in mind:"It's about the size of a small carry-on, ideal for when a rolling suitcase is not ideal," says Mello. At over 5 pounds, it may feel heavy and bulky when filled. It's also pricey compared with other options.

Pros
  • Great organizational pockets
  • Durable, weather-resistant exterior
  • Large capacity
  • Available in nylon or vegan leather
  • Separate shoe compartment
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Heavy

Materials: Neoprene | Capacity: 29 L | Size (exterior): 16½" x 11" x 9" | Weight: 3.6 lbs. | Carry options:Handles, crossbody, luggage sleeve | Colors: 6

Why we love it:Senior Style Editor Jessica Teich called this Dagne Dover bag her "weekend warrior." She finds it extremely versatile and likes that it holds a lot and sits nicely beneath airplane seats. It's made of neoprene, which is a type of synthetic rubber that's extremely flexible. Dagne Dover is known for its distinct aesthetic, and it's a popular choice for those who want to travel in style.

What experts say:Katy Nastro, a travel expert at Going , says the bag "definitely fits more than a few things and fits under most seats." She continues: "Cleans fairly easily, and comes with a ton of pockets for organizing. There's a small pocket on the outside to keep your phone handy, and an interior pocket with a clip for keeping money and other valuables safe." It includes a trolley sleeve, and its expandable sides can be unbuttoned to give you extra packing room.

Teich agrees and adds, "There's an interior water bottle sleeve, a removable matching mesh pouch and a stretchy key leash that eliminates digging for my keys at my front door after a trip away. There's a 16-inch padded laptop compartment and a crossbody strap, and I love that it zips shut completely."

Keep in mind:This is an expensive bag, and Teich shares that the fabric stains easily. "It requires a slightly fussy hand-washing routine (no spot-treating, no machine-washing)," she says. She adds that her own bag suffered a small tear within the first year of use, but she still reaches for it for every trip.

Pros
  • Has a two-way zipper
  • Has top handles and removable crossbody strap
  • Comes with mesh pouch for tech and a small laundry bag
  • Includes luggage sleeve
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Shows wear and tear; stains easily

Materials: Polyester canvas, vegan leather trim | Capacity: 49 L | Size (exterior): 18.5" x 16" x 9.5" | Weight: 3.7 lbs. | Carry options:Handles, crossbody, luggage sleeve | Colors: 5

Why we love it:Both Teich and I own and love this bag. Teich says, "I've owned this Beis Weekender for over two years now and am shocked anew by how much it holds every time I use it." I agree — it can hold enough items for two to three days (arguably, even more). Not to mention, it's a stylish option and I find it easier to carry around than a wider duffel bag. I've personally received tons of compliments on it, with multiple people saying it looked cute and spacious.

What experts say:My favorite part about the Béis weekender is its ability to stand upright, thanks to metal feet and a zippered, structured bottom, which I find perfect for storing shoes. I also love that while spacious, the bag takes up less floor space (when not used for travel, I use it as an everyday dance bag and don't mind leaving it around my apartment since it's slim).

Teich adds, "I've been able to stuff 4-5 days' worth of clothes into it. I love that it has side pockets for stuff I need to grab often because, in truth, it can be hard to find stuff once inside the capacious main compartment." She also called it her go-to bag for weekend getaways via train or car.

Keep in mind:This bag is too large to stow under an airplane seat (the brand has a mini version that's $10 less and made to be a personal item). Also, I find this bag a little heavy; it's nearly 4 pounds when empty.

Pros
  • Stands upright
  • Stylish
  • Zippered bottom compartment
  • Slim profile
Cons
  • Can feel heavy when full
  • Doesn't fit under airplane seats

Materials: Polyester | Capacity: 45 L | Size (exterior): 22" x 12" x 12" | Weight: 2.3 lbs. | Carry options:Handles, crossbody, luggage sleeve | Colors: 9

Why we love it:When fully opened, this innovative weekender looks like a regular hanging garment bag with a roomy interior that stores your suits and dresses wrinkle-free. But what sets it apart is the addition of two fold-out compartments that are attached to both sides. When you fold them up and zip them together, they transform into the shape of a duffel bag. Cool, huh?

What experts say:Managing Editor Scott Simone has owned this bag for over two years and can’t get over how much stuff it holds. "It offers enough room as a duffel (even with the suit in the garment section) to fit a week's worth of clothes." Made from a durable, weather-resistant polyester, it also comes with a shoulder strap, top handles and a trolley sleeve on the back that makes it easy to piggy-back onto your spinner. Plus, it folds flat when not in use for easy storage.

Keep in mind:Some reviewers shared that they wished the bag had more pockets overall, especially to stow smaller items. We can see that additional pockets might get in the way of garments, but it's something to keep in mind.

Pros
  • Great option for multiple outfits (or a single tux!)
  • Lightweight
  • Carry-on friendly
Cons
  • Few pockets

Materials: Leather | Capacity: 30-40 L (estimated) | Size (exterior): 19" x 9.5" x 13" | Weight: 4 lbs. | Carry options:Handles, crossbody, luggage sleeve | Colors: 3

Why we love it:First of all, this bag is stunning. It looks timeless, classy and professional. It's made from leather, which is known for its durability and potential to look even better with wear. We also love that it has handles, a crossbody strap and a luggage sleeve for easy transport.

What experts say:This pick has metal feet, allowing it to stand upright. We love that the leather feels strong and helps keep the bag's shape, making it easier to pack and transport. It features three inner slip pockets and one zippered pocket, plus two side pockets and three exterior slip pockets for smaller items.

Keep in mind:Several reviewers complained about the bag's weight. "Well designed and gorgeous bag, but… HEAVY!" one reviewer wrote. However, the weight may be one reason reviewers say it can hold heavier loads.

Pros
  • Stylish
  • Has triple compartments
  • Leather feels durable
  • Stands upright
Cons
  • Pricey
  • Heavy

Materials: Ripstop polyester | Capacity: 40 L | Size (exterior): 21.75" x 14.5" x 11" | Weight: 7 lbs. | Carry options:Handles, wheels | Colors: 5

Why we love it:If you want a bag with wheels, this Patagonia is a strong contender. Multiple reviewers called the wheels "incredibly smooth," and several said they appreciate that the bag has zippered pockets.

What experts say:If you look at the material, you'll notice a grid-like pattern. You're looking at ripstop, which is a weaving technique designed to help prevent tears.

While the bag features only two wheels, they're large and make for a smoother run. You also get top and side handles, so you have a variety of options for transport. We also like that it collapses for easy storage.

Keep in mind:Some reviewers complained about the handle length. "I'm 6 feet tall and the bag hits my feet when pulling it through the airport. The handle is too short for tall people I guess," one said.

Patagonia offers a non-wheeled version of this duffel that offers pretty much the same features. It costs $160, a steal compared to this pricier version.

Pros
  • Includes compression straps
  • Doubles as a duffel and wheeled luggage
  • Users find the wheels smooth
  • Great for outdoor adventures
Cons
  • Expensive
  • Handle may be too short for some

Materials: Nylon | Capacity: 24 L | Size (exterior): 17" x 10" x 8" | Weight: 4.7 lbs. | Carry options:Handles, crossbody, luggage sleeve | Colors: 3

Why we love it:Thanks to its structured silhouette and simple design, we think this bag can be used for anything from work trips to road trips with friends. We like that it sits perfectly on top of luggage and has a trolley sleeve to keep it secure. According to several reviewers , the bag fits perfectly under an airplane seat and can be used as a personal item.

What experts say:Jeannie Mak, managing editor at Travel Fashion Girl , says this smart little number "ticks off many boxes for an avid traveler and entrepreneur. It has many organizational pockets for the business traveler, can fit a weekend's worth of clothes and has a laptop and trolley sleeve. It's terrific for work trips, a weekend jaunt or short road trips." Made from a weather-resistant, lightweight ballistic nylon (per the brand), the compact bag opens down the middle like a suitcase, making it easy to find your stuff quickly. Plus, it has a front compartment with several different pockets to store everything you need easy access to, like your phone, passport and charger.

Keep in mind:Unlike most bags on our list, this pick doesn't have a handle wrap to keep the handles together, providing more comfort and grip.

Pros
  • Multiple pockets
  • Includes laptop sleeve
  • Opens like a suitcase
  • Fits under an airplane seat
Cons
  • Pricey
  • No handle wrap to keep handles together

Materials: Nylon | Capacity: 25 L | Size (exterior): 13.75" x 16.5" x 6.75" | Weight: 2.6 lbs. | Carry options:Handles, luggage sleeve | Colors: 10

Why we love it:Slim and structured, this bag is chic enough to use for work. We especially like that it can fit a 13-inch laptop in its dedicated laptop sleeve, but the brand also says it can fit up to 15-inch laptops in the main compartment. The bag has multiple pockets and a dedicated shoe compartment.

What experts say:Katy Nastro, a travel expert at Going , told us she reaches for this stylish carryall for weekend or overnight trips. "I mostly love it for the compartment on the bottom that keeps your shoes separate from everything else," she says. "It's for the chic and cleanliness factor." In addition to the compartments that keep everything organized, she also loves its retro canvas look and the fact that it comes in 10 different styles. The bag has a slot for your water bottle, so you can stay hydrated on the go.

Keep in mind:This bag is missing a crossbody strap. However, we like that the handles are long, so it wears comfortably, like a tote.

Pros
  • Looks sleek
  • Long handles make it easy to carry
  • Has a dedicated laptop pocket
Cons
  • Pricey
  • No crossbody strap

How we chose the best weekender bags

We take recommendations seriously here at Yahoo, so we scoured travel blogs, product sites and Reddit forums, sought out travel experts to ask for their guidance and personal recommendations, and dug through ratings and reviews.

Of course, we also drew from our own experience. Between traveling back home often and regularly taking roadtrips in California (the ultimate road-trip playground), weekender bags and duffels are all I really use. Senior Style Editor Jessica Teich is also an avid traveler who nets over 100 travel days per year and has had lived out of backpacks for months on end.

For each bag, we considered material (because the fabric of your weekender doesn't just affect how it looks — it can also make or break your trip). We also factored in capacity and size, because while some folks like to travel light and prefer using their bag as a personal item, others like to pack extras beyond their essentials. Weight, carrying options and organizational features played a huge role too, since these affect your experience while running through the airport or hopping on a train.

After gathering a bigger list of weekender bag recommendations, we narrowed it down to our 10 favorites.

What to consider when shopping for weekender bags

Material

Certain materials perform better than others when it comes to things like durability and weather resistance. Let's break it down:

  • Nylonis a popular choice for weekender bags because it's durable yet lightweight. It's great at holding its shape, water-resistant, affordable and easy to clean.

  • Polyesteris another common fabric that's affordable, lightweight, holds color well, resists water and can withstand everyday wear and tear.

  • Canvasis tough and rugged, perfect for heavier loads. It also looks great and has a timeless style. Just note that standard canvas can stain easily and absorbs moisture. When possible, look for waxed canvas if you want water resistance and more protection. Canvas is generally pricier than nylon and polyester.

  • Leatheroffers a more polished look, and with age develops a beautiful patina. It's also durable, sturdy and known for being soft and flexible. But leather, especially high-quality grain leather, will come with a higher price tag and requires gentle cleaning products when stained.

Capacity

This depends on your packing style: Do you like to travel light or do you like to overpack for those just-in-case scenarios? Our list includes weekenders ranging from 24 liters to 60 liters, but from our experience, 30 to 40 is the sweet spot for two to three days.

Size

First and foremost, "the size should align with your travel needs and airline restrictions," says Ritesh Raj, COO of travel website CuddlyNest . And you'll want to make your selection based on the length of your most common trips, suggests Mello.

  • "Carry-onsare perfect for quick weekend trips," Mello says. To be safe, we recommend a carry-on size of 22" x 14" x 9"; some airlines allow for larger, but just in case, that size will get you furthest with the least headache. "If you're planning robust international travel, particularly in Europe or on smaller airplanes, you want to consider a smaller carry-on than you may be used to in the U.S.," say Jack and Sharon Benoff, owners of boutique travel agency Vacationeeze .

  • Personal itemsfit directly underly the airplane seat in front of you. According to Smith, this typically means 18" x 14" x 8" or less for U.S. carriers. "This is the perfect small size for a quick weekend getaway, but keeping it within personal item size limits also means I can pair it with my carry-on suitcase when traveling for longer, making it even more versatile in my overall travels."

Weight

Whether you want a lighter or heavier bag is subjective, as both options have their pros and cons. For one, a lighter bag (like the 2-pound Calpak), will feel easier on your back and shoulders even when full — plus, it'll be easier to stow when not in use. However, a heavier bag (like the 5-pound Monos), will often prove its durability and strength. A luggage sleeve comes in handy with these bags so you can set them atop your rolling suitcase.

Carrying options

The three common carrying options for weekender bags include:

  • Handles. Every weekender bag is going to feature handles; usually there are two at the top, but sometimes you'll get one or two on the sides too. Handles are usually shorter so that they're easier to grip, but some bags (like the Lo & Sons pick) feature longer handles for a tote-like style that goes over your shoulder. Also, look for a handle wrap to keep them fastened for easier carrying. While a small touch, it helps provide more grip and comfort.

  • A crossbody strap. This is a great option if you'd prefer to distribute the weight between your shoulder and opposite hip. A crossbody also provides more security since your bag is close and keeps your hands free to dig for your passport, use your phone or hold a cup of coffee.

  • A luggage sleeve. Also named a trolley sleeve, a luggage sleeve is a panel of fabric that slides over your rolling suitcase handle so that you can stabilize your weekender on top. Every pick on our list except for the Patagonia has a luggage sleeve (but the Patagonia has wheels instead).

Compartments/features/organization

Smith stresses that great storage features help you quickly find your items. She suggests looking for basic organization features, like:

  • An exterior pocket. "This way, I can quickly stash things like my passport, cell phone or wallet without having to dive deep into the interior of my bag," Smith says.

  • An internal zipper pocket. "It's for an added layer of protection when packing valuables like your wallet or jewelry," Smith explains.

  • A shoe compartment. A dedicated space for your shoes helps protect the shape of your shoes and keeps the rest of your items clean.

  • Padded laptop sleeves. "Bonus points if the sleeve is removable so it's not taking up valuable space when it's not needed," Smith adds.

  • Key leashes. Some weekenders offer a short strap to securely fasten your keys to your bag.

  • Water bottle pockets. Water bottle pockets help prevent spills and offer easy access, so you don't have to dig through your bag when you need a quick sip.
