We've made our preference for briefcases and messenger bags over backpacks known, and we've done our fair share of ragging on backpacks for looking childish. Wearing a backpack to work instead of holding a leather briefcase will make you look like a college student on the way to class instead of like a grown man on the way to work. That said, we can't deny ergonomics, and we can't deny that backpacks are just the more popular contemporary choice, especially when it comes to travel .

Plus, if you have back or shoulder issues, carrying a shoulder bag on one side of your body is certainly not ideal—whereas a backpack spreads out the weight evenly across your back, making it quite a bit more comfortable. And hey, despite how we make fun of them on occasion, there are definitely some great backpacks out there that blend style and substance and can make for solid work bags. Some backpacks are even so luxurious they can elevate your whole outfit. Here are the ones we'd genuinely recommend.

Rains Backpack

Rainproof, because real adults actually dress for the weather (and guard their electronics from certain ruin in the process). This business-ready backpack is all about bringing the elevated energy of a briefcase right to your back, with comfort all the way. Its simple hook closure keeps things sleek, and you can rest easy knowing your gadgets and papers are safe inside.

Pros
  • Looks understated enough to pass for something more expensive—especially in black
  • Weather-proof
Cons
  • Plastic hardware doesn't feel great, flimsy over time

Apex Backpack 4.0 EPX

There are many reasons we named Troubadour's Apex Backpack our favorite work backpack, but to sum it up, it basically has everything you could ever want in one. Its waterproof exterior, two expandable side pockets, hidden AirTag pocket, ergonomic padding, and heavily cushioned laptop sleeve truly make this bag stand out from the rest.

Pros
  • If you want something techy and optimized for public transit commuting, this is it
Cons
  • Funny price point, not too far off a jump to something like TUMI

Lululemon Everywhere Backpack

Life may get crazy, but this backpack will help keep you sane. With dedicated compartments for your laptop, workout gear, and water bottle, it will put you in an organized state of mind. Lululemon's deep, zippered spaces are great for everything from airport travel to a trip to the gym, and the sleek exterior is nothing to sneeze at either.

Pros
  • No nonsense, gets the job done
  • Newer versions have monochromatic logos, makes it a touch more classy
Cons
  • Will kind of look like a gym bag no matter what

Bennett Winch The Backpack

If you're looking for luxury, something you won't be embarrassed to bring to a business meeting, we'll always send you to Bennett Winch. The weather-resistant canvas only looks better over time; same goes for the leather accents and brass hardware. The interior is well laid out, and the whole thing will elevate any work or airport outfit.

Pros
  • Canvas body is just as beautiful as the leather detailing
  • Unmatched build quality; nothing else on this list will last as long and look this good
  • Durable enough for real travel
Cons
  • Well, it's an investment

Herschel Pop Quiz Backpack

Herschel has been doing its thing (and by "its thing" we mean putting up numbers in the backpack game) for a minute now, and the brand's hard-earned industry credibility is nothing to scoff at. It should be one of the first places you check any time you're in the market for an upgrade. This classic style is an editor favorite, since it goes easily with any outfit and any taste—and it's surprisingly good-looking for costing under $100.

Pros
  • Looks a lot more grown up than you would expect
  • Leather bottom helps it from a durability standpoint
Cons
  • That Herschel logo is just so damn big

Arc'teryx Mantis 26 Backpack

Arc'teryx has a backpack that looks damn good and performs even better. With plenty of zippered compartments and a deep main compartment with storage for a laptop, water bottle, and more, this is how you squeeze all your essentials easily down into one. It's great for everything from a day hike to a long airport layover. And if you need more convincing, we've already written an entire review on this model.

Pros
  • Made for serious travel, so it can hold up to your little commute
  • We've always loved the Arc'teryx turbo outdoors look
Cons
  • Looks a bit turbo
  • Waist straps can cause knitwear (sweaters) to degrade faster at the waist hem

Eastpak Padded Double Backpack

This cool camo backpack from Eastpak is definitely more streetwear than officewear. It's fun and funky, and all its pockets (on the front and back) make it a great option for traveling. It has a substantially padded laptop sleeve, which will keep your tech safe.

Pros
  • The most fun option on this list
Cons
  • Looks a little kiddie when done in camo

Tumi Alpha Brief Pack

Tumi is the brand to go to if you're a traditionalist—when it comes to luggage, nothing is more traditional than Tumi. The iconic brand keeps things simple, subtle, and sleek, with an all-black backpack that works great for any environment but especially for business travel. Because when you're flying across the country, you'll appreciate all those extra pockets and special features this bag has to offer.

Pros
  • This is the business traveller pick; everything is optimized
Cons
  • Ballistic nylon body is a specific look, not for every guy
