Lego’s Best Free GWP Set Of 2026 Is Here, But Not For Long

The Lego Build, Paint and Play! (40889) gift-with-purchase is a little stunner.

The Lego Group

The most impressive Lego gift-with-purchase (GWP) set is finally available in-store and online for paying customers. Build, Paint and Play! (40889), which was only revealed last week, is now thrown in for free with basket values of over $130 (£115; €130) from today – but it's gone after November 8.

The set, which won 2025's Build Your Hobby competition , is clever and remarkably meta, combining plastic injection-molded models with, well, the world's leading plastic injection-molded construction toy. MOC maker Topi "Doomslizer" Kari 's vision has barely changed since inception, but it's easy to see why.

Kari created the original idea, which had 235 pieces, because "[b]uilding miniature model kits lets me express myself and unwind."

He continued: "My build features all the essentials to make a model come to life. A sprue, a cutting tool, glue, paint and brushes. Also it features a cutting board to work on and a decal sheet to add fine details. Finally my build features a finished miniature model."

The final version, as a display piece, is absolutely spectacular. While Lego's master builders lowered the build's brick count by nearly a third, it's still a brilliant ode to anyone who's dabbled with Airfix, Revell, or Tamiya. What's more, Lego honored Kari by putting his first name on the glue — a real class act.

It's a bit weird to build something that you should technically take apart, but it works.

Admittedly, one of the set's few rankles is how many stickers there are — a whopping eight — which is further complicated by the fact that three of them are for the edge measurements. I can see plenty of builders lining up real-life rulers to make sure they're as close to accurate as possible. Still, for such a small-run GWP, Lego would never fire up the brick printers, nor should it.

A few Lego fans might feel a bit put out by the fact that the included astronaut minifigure is in a teal color that's already been released before — the collector community lusts after new hues for that specific minifig, as is their right — but other buyers have probably already identified the super-rare grey astronaut elements on the build frame, which you can expect to hit eBay in the near future.

I'll always go out to bat for the MOC community , but as Lego increasingly includes GWPs with purchases, perhaps the time is now to mobilize its most brilliant fan asset for future collaborations. What could be better for, say, the Lego Daft Punk collab than a real devotee making a diorama based on the "Around the World video", or a Triforce to go with a future Legend of Zelda piece?
