This Grumpy-Looking $13 Cat Plush at IKEA Is So Cute Your Pet Might Steal It

Some cats have mastered the art of looking personally offended by absolutely everything. You could offer them their favorite treat, fluff their favorite blanket or simply exist in the same room, and they'll still give you a look that suggests you've committed an unforgivable crime. It's part of their charm, and apparently, someone at IKEA understands that perfectly.

The retailer's new ALPTALL Pallas's Cat Soft Toy has the same gloriously unimpressed expression, only in an extra-fluffy package that costs $12.99. With its round face, piercing yellow eyes and permanently grumpy appearance, this little wildcat looks ready to judge your entire household. And while it's technically designed for children, don't be surprised if your own cat takes an interest in the new arrival.

IKEA didn't just make another generic stuffed cat. The ALPTALL plush is modeled after a Pallas's cat, a wild feline famous for its exceptionally fluffy appearance and perpetually irritated expression.

The resemblance is pretty impressive. The gray plush has a broad, fluffy head, small ears, intense yellow eyes and a compact body that makes it look like a cat that just learned dinner will be five minutes late.

At slightly over 12 inches long, it's large enough to make a statement on a bed, bookshelf or couch without taking over the entire room.

The toy is made from recycled polyester fabric and filling, and IKEA says it's machine washable. That's particularly convenient for something destined to spend time on the couch, especially in a household where your actual pets already consider every piece of furniture their personal property.

One particularly interesting detail is that the plush's unusual ears aren't simply a design choice. Real Pallas's cats have ears positioned along the sides of their heads rather than prominently on top. According to the product details, this helps them remain concealed while hunting among rocks and ridges.

It's a clever detail that makes the toy feel more like a miniature wildcat than a cartoonish stuffed animal.

And if you're already reorganizing your living room around your pet's belongings, IKEA has a few other finds worth considering. Its KÄLKEN jute basket offers a stylish place to corral pet toys and accessories without making your home look like a pet store exploded.

This Fluffy Little Wildcat Has More Personality Than Most Stuffed Animals

The funniest thing about the Pallas's cat at IKEA is that its expression seems completely at odds with its purpose. Stuffed animals are generally designed to look cheerful, cuddly and eager to become your new best friend.

This one looks like it would prefer you respect its personal space. And somehow, that makes it even more lovable.

It's also part of the larger ALPTALL collection at IKEA, inspired by the wildlife and landscapes of the Himalayas. The collection includes other animals such as red pandas, snow leopards and yaks, giving children an opportunity to learn about species they might not encounter every day.

IKEA developed the collection in collaboration with the Swedish wildlife conservation center Nordens Ark to encourage curiosity about animals and their natural habitats.

That educational connection gives the plush a little more substance than its wonderfully grumpy face might suggest. For cat lovers, though, the real entertainment may come from placing it somewhere your own feline can investigate.

Imagine walking into the living room and discovering your cat sitting beside a stuffed version of its equally judgmental distant relative. That's a photo opportunity practically begging to happen.

Just remember that IKEA markets this as a children's soft toy, recommended for ages 18 months and older, rather than something specifically designed for pets. If your dog or cat tends to chew, tear or swallow pieces of stuffed animals, keep this one as decoration and choose a toy made for pets instead.

For actual pet essentials, the retailer's UTSÅDD pet bowl is another option designed with furry household members in mind. Still, at $12.99, the ALPTALL Pallas's cat is an irresistible addition to a cat lover's home. After all, your real cat can't be the only one judging your every move in the house.
