Mlb debut last night for Yankees top prospect George Lombard Jr., the son of George Lombard, 'cause that's how names work.
Former big leaguer, current coach for the Detroit Tigers.
Dad got the day off.
AJ Hinch said, "We traded Scubal.
We're not trying.
Season's over.
Go see your kid make his big league debut."
So he did, and George Jr.
Went yard in his second at bat, turned a sick double play.
It was quite a debut for the next great hope at shortstop to fill the mammoth shoes of one Mr. Derek Jeter.
To add to the coolness of this all, George's younger brother, Jacob, who was a first-round pick earlier this year, 14th overall to the Marlins, made his pro debut last night in Low-A.
His parents, the Lombards, were planning on going to that game.
They quickly- changed course and flew up to New York instead.
But Jacob homered, in Low-A for the Jupiter Hammerheads.
So two dongs on the same night for the Lombard family.
Very similar home runs aesthetically.
Oh, yeah.
Like, both on breaking balls, both against the Cardinals, the, the Palm Beach Cardinals and the St. Louis Cardinals.
So Jacob is this whole other s- conversation, but let's focus on George Jr. You were there pregame, I believe, to kind of take in the first introductions- Yeah for this guy.
And the, I mean, there's a lot of different things with this.
Of course, you mentioned Jeter, but I think Volpe is the one a lot of people are thinking about, especially with him going back to Triple-A.
So how did Aaron Boone talk about that, and what is your sense, especially having experienced a lot of the Volpe hype and- Yeah opposite of hype over the last few years?
I mean, George Jr. Coming up as Volpe and Dominguez go down- Mm-hmm speaks for itself.
Prospects are volatile.
They are not sure things.
Your hope is only as real as the next great hope.
