Carter Cutting Speaks on Hoka Debut, Late-Race Stumble & Returning to BYU | Post-Race Interview
Carter Cutting made his national debut in the Hoka kit, finishing 12th in a wild and tactical Men's 1500m Final. All right, good job.
Take us through that race.
It was a good, kinda crazy race.
I mean, super tactical.
Was in great position with 200 to go and then kind of stumbled up, but that's how these championships go, so I lear- learned a lot.
Yeah, I mean, it was almost anybody's game in that last 200.
What was kinda going through your head?
There wasn't a whole lot going through my head.
I, I think I tripped up with 100 to go, so when I stumbled, lost momentum, it kinda stung, but, yeah.
No, it was, it was a fun race.
Great crowd out here, so.
Your first race as a pro, how does it feel to be representing Hoka and on the national stage?
Yeah, I mean, I still run another year at BYU, so I'm stoked to come back to that, but it was super fun to represent Hoka this weekend.
They're a great company and really treated me well, so it's fun to, fun to represent them and a team that believes in me a lot.
Awesome.
Do you- A lot of- Go ahead.
A lot of people know you for your YouTube channel, New, New Standards Ta- Track Club.
Yeah.
How h- has it been bringing a new perspective to the sport?
Oh, I mean, the whole goal of it is just to keep it light.
I mean, me and Tavan and Isaac just kinda goof around and have fun with it, and kinda show that running's all not that serious.
And so it's fun to kinda, you know, show that side of the sport.
Anything you're gonna take away from this championship back to BYU and just, like, the rest of your career?
I mean, definitely a lot to learn from a race like this.
Positioning is everything, and so everyone was there with 100 to go.
It's just, where you are and, and, how you're moving that last 150 meters.
So definitely gonna go back to the drawing board and kinda see where I made those little mistakes.
But other than that, it was a great season.
Can you talk to me a little bit about this mid-distance, field that's extremely progressing?
I mean, we got Josh Kerr breaking a world record.
This mid-distance field just keeps getting better and better.
What does it mean to you to be a part of that?
It's super, super cool.
I mean, it's, The age of tracklation is real, and these guys come out here and, and show it all the time.
It's fun to even be a part of it and be in the conversation.
So yeah, I, I feel really blessed to be a part of it.
The 1500 is really competitive.
It seems like any given day anybody could win it.
How does it feel just putting yourself in those positions where you could try to go for it?
Yeah, I mean, really special.
I mean, this is kinda capped off the season.
A lot of hard work went into this.
And so even just to be out here competing and, is, is a, is a true blessing.
So yeah, I'm just grateful to be a part of it.
You're probably gonna have a solid break, but what's the importance of looking towards base-building for the summer and going into cross?
Well, as crazy as it sounds, I'm excited to get my butt kicked cross-country.
It's gonna be fun to be back on the grass.
And so, normally cross-country isn't something I look forward to, but I'm excited to have, Tavan and Isaac and all those boys whoop my butt this fall season.
Do you have anything else lined up for the summer, just going into training for cross?
I leave for Hawaii tomorrow, so I'm, gonna take a nice week off.
Well earned.
Congratulations.
Thanks.
Yeah, Carter.
