Sny's Chelsea Janes confirming reports that David Stearns is calling up outfielder AJ Ewing from Triple-A.
Ewing is the club's best position player prospect in the minors, and is hitting 326 for Syracuse.
The only problem is he's only been in Triple-A for 12 games.
All right, Harp, is this a smart move- or a desperate move?
What a loaded question, Amik, yeah.
Hey, this is the Hot Spot, baby.
No, listen, it's a desperate move.
There's no doubt about it, and they, they have to, they had to make a move just to t- to, to, kind of stop the booing before it begins on Tuesday night at Citi Field.
But this kid, I talked to scouts tonight about him.
Scouts love the kid, love his game, and they think if you're gonna take a chance on a guy, this is the right guy.
He doesn't have much Triple-A, experience.
He, he hit at every level.
He's got a really good approach at the plate.
He's fast.
He'll steal bases, a really good outfielder.
Does a lot of things that'll bring energy to a team, so there's a lot in, in that sense.
And, and then, the other part of it is he's just, he plays the game with an instinct that scouts talk about, that maybe he can make the jump and hit big league pitching.
He's got a short, compact swing, so a lot of reasons to think he's the right move.
He'll probably go slide right into the leadoff spot, and they'll move Soho, Soto back into the, two or three spot.
Okay.
It's obvious it's a desperate move because AJ Ewing has little to no experience playing in Triple-A.
It also happens, Amik, to be a smart move because the Mets are searching for offensive answers.
And let's be perfectly frank.
W- what we saw in Arizona, this is a team in dire need of a spark.
So AJ Ewing is red hot.
He's played really well in the minor leagues.
You hope you catch a little lightning in a bottle, and I think the Mets are hoping they can have their version of Chin-Ming Wang and Robinson Cano when the Yankees were 11 and 19 and looked cooked in 2005.
Brian Cashman's looking for a spark.
They moved Bernie Williams to DH.
They b- put Tony Womack out in the center field and said, "Hey, we have to try something because it's not working."
It's clearly not working for the Mets.
I'll take it.
