ラオスの小学生
2階建の小学校に登校する子供達↑ ラオスの子供はよく働きます。 今日の昼食は、タラート・レーンと呼ばれる市場（別名を中国市場と言います）にある中華料理店で食事をしました。 注文を聞き、食器や料理を運び、集金するのは、子供です。 一般に中国料理店は、一家が協力して働いていますが、ラオス人も同様、全員が労働力です。 そうした中で、小学校に通っている子供達は幸せだと思います。 義務教育であっても、学校に行けない子供もいると聞きます。 また、少し大きくなってから小学校へ入学する子供もいると聞きます。 子供達の笑顔に明るい未来を感じたいものです。【Bon appétit !】 乳児が臓器移植 Elijah Moulton, an 8-month old baby boy, is recovering well following surgery to replace 5 organs of his gastrointestinal (GI) （胃腸の）tract（器官）. ラオスの女子小学生
朝、小学校へ登校途中の女の子↑ 地方に行って目につく建物は小学校です。 各国からの援助もあり、また、教育熱心なラオスの人たちの姿勢もあり、地方に行っても小学校があります。 まだまだ絶対量は足りませんが、熱心に子供達は小学校に通っています。 一方、学校に通わないで家の手伝いをしている子供達もいるようです。 昼間から、市場で物売りをしたり、レストランで給仕をしている子供たちをたくさん目にします。 どの子も、熱心に働いています。 「ありがとう！」と声をかけると、はにかみながらも顔じゅうで笑って嬉しそうにします。 この子たちが小学校へ通えるよう祈りたいと思います 小学生の服装は、女子は白いブラウスにシンと呼ばれる伝統的なスカート、男子は白いシャツに黒のズボンです。 ヴィエンチャンも地方もこの基本は変わりません。【Bon appétit !】 水時計 The clepsydra, or water clock, is an ancient timekeeper that operates by measuring the regulated flow of liquid into or out of a vessel. ラオスの田んぼ
山の斜面に植えられているのは陸稲↑ 日本では、米は水田に作るのが、一般的です。 ごく稀に、千葉県あたりですと、畑に水をためて水田のようにして稲を育てる例を見かけることがあります。 また、陸稲と言って、畑でコメを作る場合もあります。 ここ、ラオスでは、水田で作るお米はもちろん良く見かけますが、地域によっては、山で陸稲を作っています。 一瞬、植林地かと見間違えるような所でも作っています。 ものすごい急斜面に種子を植え米を作っています。 雨季に降る天水頼りの農業です。 刈り取りも、手で穂先を削いで行うような方法を取っています。 当然刈り残しもたくさんあり、効率は良くありません。 でも、そのお陰で、森の動物が刈り残された稲を食べることができます。【Bon appétit !】 地中海 At 965,000 sq mi (2,499,350 sq km), the Mediterranean Sea is the world's largest inland sea. ラオスのお米
カオ・ラームと呼ばれる竹筒おこわ↑ ラオスの主食はお米。 しかももち米を蒸したカオ・ニャオが主食です。 ティップ・カオと呼ばれる竹製のおひつに、蒸したおこわがはいっています。 ティップカオにはいろいろな大きさのものがありますが、レストランでは一人用の小さなものが普通です。 カオ・ニャオは、子供のころ、お餅つきの時のせいろから取り出したばかりのもち米と同じような味で、その頃のことを思い出させてくれます。 麺類も、米粉から作った麺類がたくさんあります。 カオ・ピヤック・センと呼ばれる、とろとろになった麺はもち米から作ります。ラオス北部でよく見るきしめんのような麺カオ・ソイももち米からです。冷や麦のようなカオ・プンは、うるち米から作ります。 竹筒にもち米を入れて蒸したご飯もあります。竹の皮を筋に沿ってむしり取り、中のおこわを食べます。 甘い味付けがしてあり、主食と言うより、おやつ感覚の感じがします。 甘い味付けは砂糖ではなく、ココナッツミルクによるものです。 もち米に赤米のもち米を入れることもあり、そうなると赤飯そのものです。 皆さんも美味しい蒸したもち米を食べにラオスへいらして下さい、お待ちしております。【もち米】 お試し品★熊本県産ヒヨク餅米 1kg（メール便送料込） 0827秋先10

ラオスの交通ルール
ラオスの交通道路上のフランスパンのサンドウイッチ売り↑ ラオスでは、一方通行でも気にしないで逆方向からオートバイが来たりします。 車は右側通行ですが、左側に入ってくることもあります。 道路を渡るときは、絶対に車が来ない方向からも来てしまいます。 常に、右、左、上、下を何回も確認しながら道路を渡らないととんでもないことになります。 信号が赤になっても赤信号の余韻で、そのまま突き進みます。 道路上に人がいたり、道路の真ん中で車を停止して人が乗り降りしていることは日常茶飯事です。 オートバイの多人数乗りもお手のもの。 子供が運転するオートバイも良く見かけます。 速度制限はないに等しく、町から離れると高速道路並みのスピードで走ります。 屋台は一般的には、広場や、歩道上にありますが、何故か道路上に屋台を見かけることもあります。 特に広い道路であればなおさら車道上に屋台が出張ってきます。 こういうときの屋台は、フランスパンのサンドウィッチ屋さんや果物やさんが多いように感じます。 道路が広いので、車道上で店を開いても交通の妨げにならないという考えのようです。 可能な事はどんどん実行するしたたかさが感じられます。【Bon appétit !】 トルココーヒー Turkish coffee is prepared in a special pot called a cezve and is made from finely ground coffee, cold water, and sometimes sugar. ラオスのJAPANバス
車体の横にJAPANの文字が書かれたバス↑ ラオスの公共バスの車体は、耐用年数を過ぎたようなものばかりです。 民間の貸し切りバスは、豪華なものが多く、2階建てバスも走っています。 また、タイから観光客を乗せて来るバスはどれも豪華です。 公共バスは、たいていの場合、ドアを開け放して走っています。 とても危険な感じがします。 バスに乗って分かったことは、ドアを開けているのではなく、閉まらないのです。 スピードをあげたり緩めたりするたびに、ドアがスライドして開いたり閉ったりします。 どのバスも、側面に「JAPAN」の文字が書かれています。 ほとんどすべてのバスに書かれています。 これらのバスは日本からの援助により導入されたものです。 しつこい位JAPANの文字を目にしますが、目に見える援助と言う意味では良いのでしょう。 危険ですので、ドアだけは閉まるようにしてほしいと思います。【Bon appétit !】 電子レンジポップコーンと気管支炎 A number of microwave popcorn producers have announced plans to remove diacetyl, a chemical used in artificial butter flavoring, from their products following reports that the substance may cause Bronchiolitis（細気管支炎）obliterans. ラオスの雨季の通り
ヴィエンチャン最大のショッピングセンター近くの雨後の通り↑ ヴィエンチャンと言えどもまだまだ舗装していない道がたくさんあります。 短時間の豪雨でも、そのあとの道はぬかるみになります。 舗装してあるところも、水はけが悪いところは洪水のようになり、車が水をかきわけて進みます。 私がよく行くヴェジタリアン食堂の前の道は、ちょっと雨が降るとすごいぬかるみになります。 先日も、女性が滑って尻もちをついて、赤土で真っ赤に汚れてしまいました。 気をつけていても靴も真っ赤に汚れ、歩くとズボンの裾に泥が付きます。 このひどさもつかの間で、乾季になると何の問題もなくなります。 季節感の少ないラオスで、道がぬかるむことが唯一の季節感かもしれません。【Bon appétit !】 スーパーマリオブラザーズ Super Mario Bros., one of the first side-scrolling platform games, introduced video-game players to expansive(壮大な)worlds that forever changed the way video games were played, perceived, and designed. ラオスのトウモロコシジュース
黄色い液体がトウモロコシジュース↑ 色のついた飲み物の屋台があちこちにあります。 初めてラオスに来た時、黄色やオレンジ、緑色の飲み物を売っているのを見て大変驚きました。 どう見ても色つき水で、ちゃんとした飲み物とは思えなかったからです。 今日初めて、黄色い色のついた液体を飲んでみました。 これがとても美味しいトウモロコシジュースでした。 スイートコーンの液体を絞り出したようです。 砂糖水を混ぜていますので甘くはなっていますが、なかなかすぐれものの飲み物でした。 緑色の液体には、緑色の寒天のようなものが入っていて、薬草から作っているようです。 黒色の液体には、黒色の寒天のようなものが入っています。 オレンジ色の液体は液体自体がオレンジ色ですが、何かの木から採れる汁のようです。 色つき水と思ったのは私の偏見で、どれも自然の植物からとられた体に良い飲み物のようです。 早く正体をつかみたいものです。【Bon appétit !】 ドライブスルー The drive-through system, developed in the US in the 1940s, has revolutionized business practices worldwide. ラオスの象の背中のかご
象の背中にくくりつけられる乗客用のかご↑ ラオスには昔は百万頭の象王国と呼ばれていたほど、国中に象がいたようです。 今の人口が５５０万人位ですので、昔は人口に匹敵するくらいの象がいたのかもしれません。 写真は、象に乗る時に使われたかごです。 象をタクシー代わりに使っていたのでしょうね。【Bon appétit !】 北朝鮮の設立 During the Soviet occupation of North Korea, a Korean Communist named Kim Il Sung was selected to lead the new state. ラオスの有機野菜
毎週日曜日、黄金の塔の前で開催される有機野菜市場↑ 初めてラオスの有機野菜という言葉を聞いた時の私の反応は、「ラオスの野菜はみんな有機野菜なのに、どうして？」でした。 農薬や化学肥料を買うお金はありませんので、当然全て有機栽培と思っていました。 ところが、私の考えは違っているようです。 ヴィエンチャン近辺では、やはり農薬や化学肥料がかなり普及しているそうです。 有機野菜の朝市が毎週行われるということは、有機栽培ではない野菜がかなりあるということを示しています。 まだ始まったばかりで、6月頃までは月に一回の開催でしたが、この一か月くらいは、毎週開催されるようになっています。 農薬の使用は無制限でしょうから、これから、農家の所得が増えて農薬を買えるようになると恐ろしいことになるかもしれません。 このような時期に、有機野菜の考え方が浸透し始めているということは素晴しいことだと思います。【Bon appétit !】 9.11テロリスト攻撃 On September 11, 2001, 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger airplanes. ラオスの豆乳
街のあちこちで見かける屋台の豆乳↑ 29年前、台湾で飲んだ豆乳はとてもおいしく今でも思い出します。 揚げパンや白いパンを食べながら飲む豆乳のファンの方も多いのではないでしょうか？ ラオスにきて、豆乳を売っている屋台を見つけた時はとても嬉しかったです。 かなり多くの人が豆乳を買っては、歩道上のテーブルで飲んでいます。 揚げパンの屋台も近くにありますので、揚げパンを食べながら豆乳を飲むこともできます。 ラオスの豆乳は、味はいいのですが、望みが二つあります。 一つは、もう少し濃くしてもらいたいということです。 少々水っぽい感じがします。 もう一つは、甘さを控えめにしてもらいたいということです。 ちょっと甘すぎるので、砂糖水のような感じになってしまいます。 注文の時に甘さを控えめにしてもらうことができるとの話ですので、今度試みてみたいと思います。【Bon appétit !】 オリーヴ油 Traditionally, olive oil, a yellow to greenish vegetable oil, was produced by crushing olives in mortars or beam presses. ラオスのピザ
私のお気に入りのイタリア料理店のピザ・マルゲリータ↑ ラオスにもピザを出してくれるレストランがあります。 その中でも私のお気に入りの店が4件あります。 アメリカ風のボリューム感のあるピザを出すフレンチレストラン。 パリパリの薄手の生地にチーズたっぷりのフレンチレストラン。 スウェーデン風とうたっている大衆受けするピザ。 そして私のお気に入りは、素朴かつヘルシーな感じがするイタリア料理店のピザ。 やはり、ピザと言えばマルガリータ。テキーラベースのマルガリータ？？ まだ区別がつきません。マルゲリータですね。 薄手の生地にチーズとトマトとバジルがのっていて、味はシンプル、色はトリコロール。 「基本は大切に」のお手本見たいなピザです。 イタリア語でマルゲリータはヒナギクのことですが、マルゲリータもマルガリータも語源は真珠だとか。 ピザを食べたことのあるラオス人はまだ少ない感じがします。 食べたことのない人がたくさんいます。 それでも少しづつ浸透してきているようで、スウェーデン風ピザの店では、地元の人を見かけます。【Bon appétit !】 ベートーヴェンの死因は医者の治療？ Prior to his death in 1827, composer Ludwig van Beethoven suffered from edemas（浮腫）of the abdomen（腹部）. His doctor treated this condition by puncturing Beethoven's abdominal cavity（腔）and then sealing the wound with a lead（鉛）-laced poultice（湿布）. Forensic（犯罪学の）analysis of Beethoven's hair has shown that lead concentrations in his body spiked after each visit to his doctor, and these medical treatments may have contributed to his untimely death. ラオス語は「レストラン「テチャングム」」と書いてあります↑ 「チャングムの誓い」面白かったですね。 と思っていたら、先日訪問した中国市場にある食堂のテレビで「チャングムの誓い」を放映していました。 ビデオ放映かテレビ放送かは確認できませんでしたが、その後また食べに行った時も「チャングムの誓い」を放映していました。 ここ、ラオスでも人気のようです。 チャングム食堂という名前の食堂もあります。 ラオスのテレビの普及率よくわかりませんが、ビエンチャンで3割位のような気がします。 基本的にテレビがない家が多いので、夜は、家の前に椅子を出してぼんやりと座っていたり、人と話をしたり、ギターを弾いたりする人がたくさんいます。 日本でも、テレビがない頃の夏の夜は、こうして地域の人が夜風に当たりながらそぞろ歩きをしたり、隣の人と話をしたりしていたのでしょう。【Bon appétit !】 卵巣摘出とパーキンソン氏病 A study reviewing the health of thousands of women decades after undergoing surgical ovary（卵巣）removal, or oophorectomy（卵巣摘出術）, indicates that ovary excision（摘出）prior to menopause（閉経）is linked to increased risk of dementia（痴呆）and Parkinson's disease. ラオスのぶっかけごはん
カオ・ラートナーと呼ばれるぶっかけご飯↑ ラオスではカオニャオ（おこわ）とおかず、スープというのが料理の基本ですが、ぶっかけご飯もあります。 体裁よくいえばラオス風中華丼。 ご飯に、肉や野菜のおかずをぶっかけたものです。 ご飯は、もち米ではなくうるち米です。 私は、カオニャオが好きですが、カオ・ラートナーの時は、仕方ありませんが、うるち米のご飯で楽しむことにしています。 米粒が長く、粘り気がなく、日本では外米と呼ばれるお米を炊いたものです。 店先のウインドウの中に、数種類から十数種類のおかずが入っているので、自分の食べたいものを伝えます。 3種類位のおかずをご飯にかける例が一般的です。 犬のご飯だという人もいますが、どうしてどうしてそんなことはありません。 手軽に栄養が取れるすぐれものの料理です。【Bon appétit !】 自転車 The first bicycle, probably created by the German Baron Karl de Drais de Sauerbrun in the early 1800s, was a form of hobby-horse（木馬）that was propelled（推進する）by the rider's feet pushing against the ground. ラオスの鉄道その２
タイ国鉄の線路から左に分岐すると、その先はラオス↑ タイからビエンチャンへ続く鉄道線路は今工事が進められています。 タイ側は、ほとんど完成したというので見に行ってきました。 バンコクから来る列車の終着駅はノンカイ駅です。 ここから、さらに２ｋｍほど先まで線路は続いています。 そこに廃駅のような駅があり、駅名は同じノンカイ駅です。 終着駅から、廃駅のような本当に最後の駅に向かって暫く行くと、左に分岐する線路が見えてきます。 この線路が、ラオスへつながっているのです。 転轍機はまだついていませんので、列車が間違ってラオス方面に入り込むことは今のところはありません。 この線路は、この先、ラオスとタイを結ぶ橋に続きます。 単線です。 橋は、友好橋と呼ばれ、現在は車が走っています。 この道路は、片側1車線になっています。 この道路の真中に線路が走っています。 どう見ても、列車通過中は車を通行止めにしないと危険です。 おそらく一日2～3往復位の列車本数を考えているのでしょう。【Bon appétit !】 肥満の手術は安全か？ With rising obesity rates, bariatric（肥満の）surgery, an obesity reduction method that utilizes surgical intervention（治療措置）, has become a popular treatment method. ラオスの鉄道
タイのノンカイ駅の駅名標。次の駅はラオス↑ ラオスには鉄道がありません。 でも、実は60年以上前に、鉄道がありました。 ラオスの最南部カンボジアに続くメコン川の中には無数の島があります。 島の数は4,000を超すと言われています。 その中のコーン島とデット島との間に、フランスが植民地時代に鉄道を敷設しました。 線路の総延長は6.5ｋｍ。 この線路は、第2次世界大戦の時に、日本軍の進駐で廃止され、その後ラオスには鉄道は敷設されていません。 現在、いくつか鉄道の計画があります。 コーン島の鉄道を復活させようという動きがその一つ。 また、ベトナムとラオスを鉄道で結ぶ計画もあります。 ビエンチャンとバンコクを結ぶ計画もあります。 これは計画というより、既に工事が始まっています。 バンコクから来た鉄道は、タイのノンカイが終点です。 そこからビエンチャンまで線路を延長します。 ノンカイ駅の駅名標は既に、次の駅名がラオスの駅名になっています。【Bon appétit !】 ビタミンCと風邪 A recent review of the data collected in 30 studies of Vitamin C indicates that the supplement does not provide any significant benefit to the general population. ラオスの紗
絹織物の店内に展示されているうすぎぬ↑ ラオスの民族数は、公式には４９ということになっています。 言語で分類すると１００以上になるという人もいます。 それぞれの民族は固有の神話や宗教観を有していて、独自の民族衣装を伝えています。 衣装に使う織物の分類で民族を分ければどのくらいになるのか見当がつかないくらいです。 織物の糸や染料、機の構造や模様の装飾技法には、たくさんのバリエーションがあります。 まだ、それぞれのバリエーションが伝統として残っていますので、今のうちに分類しておくことが人類の財産になるのではないかと思います。 それだけラオスには固有の織物文化があると言われています。ラオスの布を楽しむ【Bon appétit !】 曼荼羅 The mandala, meaning circle or completion(完成), is a ritualistic（儀式の）diagram that has spiritual significance in Hinduism and Buddhism.
