Members of the British Antarctic Survey have identified a layer of volcanic ash and glass shards(破片、かけら)frozen within an ice sheet in western Antarctica. They believe that a rare volcanic eruption more than 2,000 years ago punched through the ice sheet(氷床), scattering ash and debris across the icy landscape. This new study is the first to show direct evidence of a relatively recent eruption from under the Antarctic ice sheet.
