Usually found in places with thin or nutrient-poor soil, carnivorous plants(食虫植物)derive some or most of their sustenance(食物)by attracting, trapping, and digesting insects, small animals, and protozoans(原生動物). Though there are hundreds of species of carnivorous plants, they all attract and trap prey using any of 5 basic mechanisms: pitfall(落とし穴、わな)traps, flypaper(ハエ取り紙)traps, snap(素早くつかむ、速射する)traps, bladder(袋状組織)traps, and lobster-pot(エビ取りかご)traps. Just two species are classified as “active” snap traps; one is the Venus flytrap(ハエトリソウ、ハエジゴク).
