メコン川の滝の一部↑（ 2008 年 4 月 14 日、チャンパサック、ラオス）

　ラオスが抱える第 2 の問題点は、ラオスには海が無いということです。メコン川が活用できるのではないかと思われるでしょうが、メコン川は、ラオス南部に大きな滝があり、船の航行を妨げています。第２次世界大戦までは、フランスが、滝の下流と上流を結ぶ鉄道を敷いて荷物を運んでいましたが、非効率でした。ラオスから荷物を運び出すためには、陸路でタイまたはベトナムまで運ぶ必要があります。タイも、ベトナムも距離的には近いので、距離そのものが大きなハンデイになることはありませんが、実際には、税関をスムーズに通れない、予期しない手続きや支払いが必要となるなど簡単にはいきません。 ​

Landlocked countries are cut off from sea resources such as fishing, and more importantly, have no access to seaborne trade, which makes up a large percentage of international trade. Thus, coastal regions tend to be wealthier and more heavily populated than inland areas. In the case of Laos, this disadvantage is strikingly apparent, as Laos is the only landlocked country in the whole of Southeast Asia.
