　　「道を以〔もっ〕て人主〔じんしゅ〕を佐〔たす〕くる者は、
　　兵〔へい〕を以て天下を強くせず。其の事〔こと〕好〔よ〕く還〔かえ〕る。
　　師〔し〕（※軍隊）の處〔お〕る所〔ところ〕には、
　　荊棘〔けいきょく〕（※いばら）生〔しょう〕ず。
　　大軍〔たいぐん〕の後〔のち〕、必ず凶年〔きょうねん〕有り。
　　善〔ぜん〕なる者は果〔か〕なるのみ。敢〔あえ〕て以て強〔きょう〕を取らず。
　　果にして矜〔ほこ〕る勿〔な〕かれ、果にして伐〔ほこ〕る勿〔な〕かれ、
　　果にして驕〔おご〕る勿かれ、果にして已〔や〕むを得ざれ、
　　果にして強〔きょう〕なる勿かれ。

　　是〔これ〕不道〔ふどう〕と謂〔い〕う。
　　不道〔ふどう〕なれば早く已〔や〕む。」

　　　以道佐人主者、不以兵強天下。其事好還。
　　　師之所處、荊棘生焉。大軍之後、必有凶年。
　　　善者果而已。不敢以取強。
　　　果而勿矜、果而勿伐、果而勿驕、果而不得已、果而勿強。
　　　物壯則老。是謂不道。不道早已。

　　　(A caveat against war)
　　　He who would assist a lord of men in harmony with the Dao will not assert his
　　mastery in the kingdom by force of arms.
　　Such a course is sure to meet with its proper return.

　　In the sequence of great armies there are sure to be bad years.
　　A skilful (commander) strikes a decisive blow, and stops.
　　He does not dare (by continuing his operations) to assert and complete his mastery.
　　He will strike the blow, but will be on his guard against being vain or boastful or
　　arrogant in consequence of it.
　　He strikes it as a matter of necessity; he strikes it, but not from a wish for mastery.
　　When things have attained their strong maturity they become old.
　　This may be said to be not in accordance with the Dao: and what is not in accordance
　　with it soon comes to an end.

　「『道』によって君主を助けるということは、武力を優勢にすることではない。
　武力を優勢にすれば尊大さが生まれる。
　武力のあるところはどこでも無秩序が生まれる。
　大きな戦いのあとには喪失（そうしつ）の年が来る。
　勝利はただ競争の結果にすぎない。
　力の優勢をあえて求むべきではない。
　勝利は結果にすぎないから、そのために見せびらかすべきではない。
　結果にすぎないから、誇（ほこ）るべきではない。
　結果にすぎないから、獲得しただけにすぎない。
　結果にすぎないから、力の優勢を求むべきではない。
　強いことを求めると衰退（すいたい）に行きつく。
　これは『道』に反することである。
　『道』に反することは長く続かない。

　※果ということばの説明は今まで混乱してきた。ここでは結果と訳す。
　だから戦争の勝利は戦いの結果にすぎない。
　結果が終わる前には、戦いがどのように終るかはどちら側も確かでない。
　王准は完成と訳す。そして、墨子（ぼくし）と淮南子（えなんじ）の解釈を示している。」
