内野が土でないと野球はできない
「内野が土でないと野球はできない」と主張する日本中の野球関係者に対して散々反論してきましたがもう反論しません。 この写真を見てそれでも「土が必要」と言うのであれば、どうぞご勝手に。 でも、一言だけ言わせていただきます。この写真の保護者も少年たちが芝生の上で野球やるのが最高と口揃えて言っています。

これって、マジですか？・Is this answer for real?
最近の書き込みにN新聞の記事内容について疑問を投げかけた。記事には校庭芝生の課題として「綱引き、なわとびが出来ないなど利用方法に制約。鉄製スパイクシューズの使用も不可」とあった。 当新聞会社にメールで「地元の芝生化された公園で綱引も縄跳びも問題なく出来ているし、芝生の上でJ-リーグのサッカー、トップリーグラグビーや大リーグが問題なく行われていることを指摘した。 その数日後に編集局 読者センターからこんな回答が来ました。 「お尋ねの「芝生の校庭 じわり定着」の記事に「綱引き、なわとびができないなど利用方法に制約。鉄製スパイクシューズの使用も不可」とあるのは、小中学校の校庭を芝生化する際の課題を記したものです。公園や競技場のことではありません。」 ちょっと待ってください。同じ人間が同じ芝生の上で同じ活動を行う場合は公園ではできて、校庭では出来ないという理屈になります。日本を代表する新聞記者や編集局でお勤めの方々がこの次元の記事を書いて、なんとも思わないですか。 その後、当記事を実際に書いた記者と話をする機会があったが、さすがに彼が上記の解答内容にクビをかしげていました。その後のフォローがどうなるかは知りませんがね。 In a recent post I commented on an article concerning grass in school grounds, reaching the following conclusion: "Constraints arise on use of the field, including no longer able to enjoy tug-of-war or skipping rope. Sports shoes with cleats can not be used on grass" In an e-mail to the paper, I pointed out that tug-of-war and skipping rope posed no problem at a local park converted to grass and that soccer, rugby, and baseball were played on grass in leading competitions. A few days later, I received a mail from the Readers Section of the Editorial Dept, along the following lines: "Our article was focused on school grounds, not on parks or sports grounds". Hold on just a moment, my good fellow! When the same people engage in the same activity on the same grass, how can it be no problem when the grass is in a park but not possible when that grass is in a school ground? Do the employees at this, one of Japan's leading papers, really not mind that their paper has articles of such an astoundingly low level? The journalist who actually wrote the article in question called me yesterday and even he had to cock his head in disbelief at the appallingly bad logic in the Editorial Dept's answer. I am not sure what will happen next.

機械不信・Mistrust of machines
もともと機械に頼るのは人間にとってよくないと思っている自分ですが最近の出来事でますます機械不信になっちまいました。 以前から血圧が少々高くて気になっていたがこれはあくまでもい家庭用の血圧計で測ってのことです。 白衣高血圧症候群とかいう表現があり、お医者さんで測ると血圧が高くなることを言うんだそうです。僕は逆です。お医者さんの水銀で測ると低く表示されて、前々からおかしいと思っていたら先日訪問したときは右腕は水銀で、左腕は血圧計で測定したら、左が158/93、右が138/80だった。 もう家で血圧計で測るのを止めます。3週間に1回お医者さんのところで計って、それに基づいて健康管理をします。 A recent event has made me even more suspicious of machines than I already was. My blood pressure is flirting with dangerous levels, but this isas measured by a home blood pressure kit. Most people find their blood pressure measures higher when at the doctor's clinic, probably out of nerves, but I am the opposite. Thus, my doctor recently measured my blood pressure with a machine on the left arm and the mercury kit on the right arm. Would you believe that pressure was 158/93 with the machine but a mere 138/80 with mercury. I no longer bother with the home kit, having decided to base my health management on my blood pressure as measured by my doctor once every three weeks.

朝日新聞 有難う御座いました・Asahi Newspaper, thank you
先日の書き込みで10月9日の朝日新聞新潟版に掲載された「鳥取方式」が誤解されやすい記事についてコメントをしましたがその後は展開がありましので報告いたします。 新聞社へ抗議し、編集部の方と話をしましたところ、14日付けの朝刊に「鳥取方式」の正しい情報を伝える訂正記事が掲載されました。 確かに最初の記事は朝日新聞にふさわしくなく、内容に間違いがあり、記者の勉強不足ではありましたが、その後の対応は誠意があり、迅速、かつ丁寧でした。感謝致しております。有難う御座いました。 読者の皆様には正しい情報が伝わるよう これからも「鳥取方式」については内容を確認した上での記事をお願い致します。 Several days ago, I complained about a poorly-researched article in the Asahi Newspaper that conveyed false information concerning the Tottori Method. Subsequently, I had several discussions with the Editorial Dept, leading to developments worthy of comment. The 14 October morning paper contained the article posted above, correcting the false information in the earlier article. The initial article was definitely poorly-researched and misleading but the Editorial Dept response was both sincere, prompt, and polite, for which I offer my genuine gratitude. Thank you very much. In order that readers of this and other newspapers, I implore both journalists and editors to ensure that they check the content properly when reporting on the Tottori Method.

冬シバ初芝刈り・First mow of winter grass
先程約束したとおり、切れ味抜群の刃を装備した芝刈り機で今年の9月下旬に種をまいた冬シバを刈りました。 先の写真で半分以上隠れていたテニスボールがほとんど全部見える状態です。少し引いた写真だと全体が良く見えます。草取りせず、芝刈り、施肥と散水の三点セットで冬シバを播いたらこれからも春まで気持ちよく遊べる絨毯が完成しています。

冬シバをいつ芝刈りするか・When to mow the winter grass?
おそらく多くの方が9月末前後に冬シバの種をまかれたと思いますが今はティフとの間から細い葉っぱがぐんぐん伸びてきているでしょう。写真のようになっているではないでしょうか。 問題はいつごろ芝刈りすべきかです。ポイントは下記のとおりです。 １ この長さになっていれば、芝刈りしましょう。ちなみにティフトンが4cmですのでライグラスが8cmぐらいになっていると思います。別に測ったわけではないけど。 ２ 芝刈り機の刃を綺麗に研磨してから芝刈りしましょう。 ３ 刈高を5cmにして刈ってください。 今日の午後刈る予定ですので刈ってからの写真を明日掲載します。 宜しく

背景・Background
最近の訪問者が多分気になっている現象が起きています。少し説明が必要ではないかと思います。妻についてです。 もともと日本の行政の子供に対する姿勢（OECD加盟国の中で教育予算がGDPに比率として最低である、子供にとって芝生がいいと言いながらお金がかかるから予算をなかなか充てない、などなど）が大嫌いな人で、この芝生化運動にはそれ程積極的ではないです。別に反対しているわけではないけど、もし僕が明日の朝「GSTをたたんで、翻訳一本で生活しよう」と言い出したら世界で最も喜ぶ人でしょう。 NPOを立ち上げる前の収入と比べて最低で80％減、今でも半分行くかいかないか、自分と旦那の健康が害され、生活が乱され、それでも文句一つ言わない人ですので、僕から見たら感謝の連続です。 ここに来て、初めてこのブログに訪問したという自称ケンタッキーブルーグラスさんが根拠も証拠もなく僕の心の奥にあるのは「英雄扱いしてくれ」という願望であるというある意味では誹謗中傷的な書き込みをしました。ケンタッキーブルーグラスさん、恥を知れ。 僕のことを妬んだり、恨んだり、批判したかったりするのは別の構わない。正直言って、どうでもいいです。勝手にどうぞが僕の本音でしょう。 但し、その悪意に満ちた、心の狭い、嫌らしい意見を自分の心のなかに閉じ込めてください。聞き苦しいです。迷惑です。妻の耳に届いて欲しくありません。 まともな意見交換や議論をしたいのは大歓迎ですが、自分の歪んだ意見だけ述べて後は隠れるといった卑怯者は訪問しなくて結構です。 Recent visitors will have noticed a phenomenon here that deserves some explanation. It concerns my wife. She has never really liked the Japanese authorities attitude to children (lowest ratio of education spending to GDP among the OECD nations, a reluctance to allocate funds for grass school grounds despite professing to believe that grass is a better environment for children, etc. etc.), so has never been a great fan of my NPO's activities. Make no misunderstanding, she has never opposed it but she would be the happiest person in the world were I to tell her tomorrow morning that I was folding up the NPO and going back to translation as my only work. My feelings toward her are one of undying gratitude for never once complaining despite a fall in my income to less than half the pre-NPO level (down as much as 80% at its nadir), despite the damage to bout our health, and despite the disruption to our intended lifestyle. To add insult to injury, a first-time visitor who calls himself Kentucky Blue Grass has the utter gall to attack me in near-libelous terms, claiming that he can see into my heart and knows that all I really want is to be treated like a hero. Shame on you, Kentucky Blue Grass. If you want to envy me, to hate me, or to criticise me, feel free. Frankly, I couldn't give a damn (apologies to Rhett). Suit yourself But please keep your narrow-minded, petty, spiteful comments to yourself. They are ugly to listen to, they are downright annoying. I particularly do not want my wife to be exposed to them. I welcome wholeheartedly people who genuinely desire an exchange of opinions and true debate. But I equally despise cowards who merely post their twisted, abusive opinions then scurry off to hide who knows where.

朝日新聞、懲りないね・When will they ever learn?
またも朝日新聞！ 2-3日前に掲載された記事でこのような内容が含まれていた。「また、「鳥取方式」の場合、芝生が傷みすぎないよう、児童１人あたり１５平方メートルの面積が確保できることが条件。児童数の多い学校が希望する場合にどうするかが課題になる。」 記者に確認したら、「GSTのホームページで確認したけど隅々まで見る時間はなかった」という返事だったが当HPの「鳥取方式とは」のメニューをクリックすると表示されるページにこの内容がはっきりと表示されている。 大変なんねんながら、記者の確認はここまで及ばなかった。その結果としてこの新聞の読者が「鳥取方式」を正しく理解することが出来ないけどもっと残念なのはその読者たちが新聞記事が正しいだろうという気持ちでいますので自分たちが誤解していることも知らずに一人当たり15m2以下の学校等の場合は「鳥取方式」では対応できないと思ってしまう。 実際にもっと厳しい条件のある東京の数箇所の小学校で一年中利用可能な校庭芝生化を実施しています。 日本中の記者へのメッセージ：記事を書く前に事実を確認してください。仮に周辺に「鳥取方式」を実施している場所があったにせよ、「鳥取方式」を正しく完全に説明できるのはグリーンスポーツ鳥取のみです。我々に連絡しなければ、ちゃんと確認したことにはなりません。 Asahi Newspaper strikes again! A couple of days ago, the article linked here contained the following content:"In addition, we note that the Tottori Method sets a condition of 15m2 per student for a school ground in order to prevent excessive damage to the grass. The problem is what to do at schools with a large number of pupils" When asked, the journalist replied that she had attempted to check the content against GST's home page but that she did not have enough time to check every last page and detail on our home page. The reality is that if you click on the "Tottori Method" menu, the page shown above is displayed, clearly showing the different installation methods GST proposes for varying grass area per pupil. Unfortunately, this journalist did not bother to check this far--one click of the mouse--and as a result, readers not only are not able to gain a full understanding of this method but also they, naturally assuming that the content of the article has been checked and is accurate, remain unaware that their understanding is incomplete. Thus, they are convinced that the Tottori Method is unable to respond to requests from schools with grass area less than 15m2 per pupil. The reality is that we have been responsible for the conversion to grass with unhindered year-round use of several primary schools in Tokyo with far more smaller areas per pupil. My request to journalists throughout Japan is simple: please check the content properly of the articles you are writing. Even if some group near you has implemented the Tottori Method at one or two locations, the only organisation capable of offering a comprehensive explanation in depth of the Tottori Method is Green Sports Tottori. If you haven't spoken to us, you have not checked the content properly.

誤解していない？・Misunderstanding?
2日前のN新聞の朝刊に校庭芝生についての記事が載っていたがその一部を紹介したい。 校庭芝生化の課題の部分でこんなコメントが書いてあった。「綱引き、なわとびが出来ないなど利用方法に制約。鉄製スパイクシューズの使用も不可」 鉄製スパイクシューズについてはJ-リーグのサッカーやトップリーグのラグビー、又は大リーグのベースボールを見ればこれは完全に間違っているのはよく分かります。すべての背景を確認するまでは断言すべきではないと主張する読者には申し訳ないがあえて断言します：これは記者の大きな勘違いです。もう少しきちっと勉強して欲しかったです。 綱引きと縄跳びに関しては2枚の写真を見せます。 いずれも我々が鳥取市と協力して芝生化した公園で開催された近所の町内会の運動会で撮影された写真です。弁論は以上です。 記者に聞きます。それでも利用方法に制約があるというのですか。 I would like to comment on an article concerning grass school grounds that appeared in a leading newspaper a couple of days ago. In a section discussing the merits and problems of grass fields, the journalist wrote the following: "Constraints arise on use of the field, including no longer able to enjoy tug-of-war or skipping rope. Sports shoes with cleats can not be used on grass" With regard to sports shoes with cleats, you only have to watch one J-League soccer match, one Top League rugby match, or one MLB baseball match to realise that the writer is completely incorrect. I state definitively: the journalist has made a huge mistake. I would like her to have checked up a wee bit more thoroughly. As for tug-of-war and skipping rope, I submit two photographs taken at a local residents' association sports day held at a local park we converted to grass with the cooperation of Tottori city. With this I rest my case.

犬も芝生大好き・Dogs too love grass
秋が深まり、芝生の色が一段と濃くなり、ラグビーの練習がすごくもちよくなっているグリーンフィールドにはできるだけ毎日我が家の犬達をつれていくことにしている。 30分～1時間ご近所の友達とたくさん遊び、すき放題走りまわった後、さあ、家に帰ろうとしときはそれぞれの性格がよく現れる。 この写真の手前は末っ子のアリーちゃん。まだ5ヶ月の子犬で1時間走りまわっても元気が有り余っている。その後ろは11歳のおばあちんプリンセスです。グリーンフィールドを作る時からここに通っていて、おそらく自分の為にお父ちゃんがつくってくれた庭だと思っているに違いない。相変わらず口にはテニスボールを加えていて、ボールを投げてくれる人がいれば足が痛くなるのを無視して何時までも追い続けるので今は加減している毎日。 そのずいぶん後ろに付いて来ているのはすっきりお嬢さん気分の次女チカちゃん。この子はとびきりの甘えん坊でいつも愛情確認中で、決して焦ったりしない優しい子で、ゆっくりと歩いてクルマに乗るのが癖になっている。 As we enter autumn, with the grass at Greenfield an even deeper shade of green, and rugby training highly enjoyable, I try to take our three dogs to the park every day. After they have raced around and played with their mates to their little hearts' content, we head for home and this is the moment their respective personalities show clearly. The lead dog in this photo is Ali, our youngest and at only 5 months old still a puppy. She is full of beans even after an hour's exercise. Jogging slowly along behind her is Princess, an old lady at 11 years now. She has spent so much time here since those early days back in 2002 when we started converting the field to grass that at times I am sure she reckons that this is her backyard, prepared for her by her dad. She has the ubiquitous tennis ball in her mouth and will chase it as long as there is someone to throw it for her, regardless of the resulting pain in her joints. Nowadays, we take care that she do not over-exert herself. Trailing far behind is our second lass, Chika, very much the young lady. She is a total softie, always seeking affection, and never in a hurry. She trots along at her own pace then gets in the car.

ティフトンに軍配
今年の5月に我家の庭に生えているいわゆる「雑草」らしき草を取るべきかどうかの議論について書き込みしたが読者の意見もあり結局取らずにほっと置くことにした結論も明記した。 当時の雑草の状態はこんな感じだった。 もし手で取ることにしたら500m2ほどの面積は2人で2日間ぐらい掛かったでしょう。 作業人時間に換算したら15～16時間あたりになる。芝刈り作業は別。 夏場の間は月1回ほどの施肥、毎日2回の散水（朝日新聞の記者は特にご注意を）、及び週2回程度の芝刈りを続けた結果、次の写真のようになっている。芝刈りは1回20分程度で、おそらく40回ぐらい芝刈りしているので作業時間に換算したら15時間です。 最終的に取るかどうかは一人一人が考えることでしょうが少なくても僕は草取りせずにやっても十分の綺麗な芝生になると思っている。

今日はシーズン開始・Season starts today
グリーンフィールドをホームグラウンドとするGST傘下のラグビー、サッカー、ホッケークラブの2010/11年シーズンが今日からスタートします。4月末以来の会員との再会も楽しみですし、しばらく休養できた芝生もすごくいい状態になっていますのでここで練習するもの楽しみです。 ラグビーをやってみたい人がいたら是非参加してくだしい。未経験者でも大歓迎です。第1と3週末は土曜日、第2と4週末は日曜日いずれも午後3時から、毎週の水曜日は午後7時30分から練習します。マウスガード着用は義務付けです。 The 2010/11 season for the soccer, rugby, and hockey clubs affiliated with GST starts today and I look forward to meeting the lads again, some for the first time since our season ended at the end of April. Our home ground, Greenfield, has also had a 5-month rest and the grass is in marvelous condition. I also look forward to playing rugby here again.
