Last Saturday, I noticed a nymph poking its head above the water, and I thought it would likely emerge soon. However, three days have passed since it fully climbed out of the water, and it still hasn’t emerged. The nymph remains clinging to a branch, unable to return to the water. Having transitioned from gill breathing to lung breathing, it cannot feed and must wait for death unless it successfully emerges. Normally, a nymph that climbs entirely out of the water will emerge the same night, but for some reason this process has stalled. I tried darkening the room to encourage emergence during the day, but it had no effect. Meanwhile, because I held back on feeding the other nymphs, I found today that one more had fallen victim to cannibalism. The number of nymphs in the plastic case has now dropped below ten. I desperately hope to see at least one of them emerge safely, but under the current circumstances, it seems unlikely.
