Six weeks ago, betting on a Fed rate hike was the financial equivalent of betting the sun rises in the west, priced under 10% and treated as a novelty contract for people with money to burn. Now Wednesday's specific odds have cooled to somewhere between one in five and just over one in four on the prediction markets, even as the odds of a hike happening at all this year have rocketed to 69%. Confused yet? Good. So is everyone else. The short version is that one hawkish new Fed chair opened his mouth, and one very old shipping lane closed its fist, and together they've turned a boring summer meeting into an actual bet.

Kevin Warsh's first meeting back on June 17-18 held rates steady and gave markets nothing to chew on, no forward guidance, a suspiciously skinny statement, the central-banking equivalent of a poker player refusing to blink. Like any smart diva looking to cement their place in the public psyche, Warsh's silence turned out to be its own provocation. When the minutes leaked a genuinely split committee, hike odds for the year surged from 35% to 57% in two days flat, before settling near 54%, right alongside 76% odds the Fed hands out exactly zero cuts all year.

Then Warsh actually opened his mouth in public, and made things worse for himself. Standing at the ECB's Sintra forum on July 1 next to Lagarde, Bailey, and Macklem, he announced prices are too high and warned that anyone expecting the Fed to tolerate above-target inflation would be disappointed, central-banker for "don't get comfortable." Traders shoved hike-before-2028 odds up to 77% on the spot. May's inflation print, 4.2% year over year, the hottest since 2023, backed him up like a bouncer.

Then oil did the rest of the dirty work. Trump reinstated a blockade on Iranian ports, slapped a 20% toll on cargo through the strait, crude soared back into the triple digits, and July-meeting odds rocketed from under 10% to 36% almost overnight. Fed Governor Waller piled on too, warning the committee not to repeat 2021's mistake of dawdling.

Things have since cooled with that 36% peak fading to 28 cents on Kalshi and closer to 19% on Polymarket. Citadel Securities, though, is betting against everybody, calling for a surprise hike Wednesday to slam the door on forward guidance for good, arguing the market's underestimating just how hawkish this Fed's already gotten.

Take your pick of oddsmakers. Nothing here is settled, and that's the point: 6 weeks ago this wasn't a real conversation, and now it's a genuine two-sided bet, with Wall Street's own biggest market-maker publicly betting the crowd's still asleep.
