Quick Read

  • GLDM pulled in $500M in new inflows versus $182M for GLD, as investors chase the same gold exposure at one-quarter the cost.

  • GLD's 0.40% fee versus GLDM's 0.10% costs an extra $5,700 on a $100,000 position over 20 years with zero dividend to offset it.

  • Switching from GLD to GLDM outside a retirement account can trigger a 28% collectibles tax on gains that may take a decade of fee savings to recover.

  • Building a portfolio and living off one are two completely different skills, and almost nobody teaches the second. This problem is what The Definitive Guide to Retirement Income helps, and it is free today. Read more here. (Sponsor)

SPDR Gold Shares( NYSEARCA:GLD ) is the gold ETF most investors know first. GLD launched in November 2004, holds physical bullion, and trades with deep liquidity. Those strengths explain its scale, and GLD still drew $181.5 million in net inflows as of October 14, 2026, equal to 0.10% of its $139.59 billion in assets. Its smaller sister, SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust( NYSEARCA:GLDM ), took in $499.8 million in net inflows over the same period, or 1.60% of its $31.08 billion base.

Same metal, same SPDR family. New money preferred the smaller fund by a wide margin, and the reason comes down to what each charges to hold your gold.

Same Bullion, Different Wrappers

Both funds are grantor trusts whose sole assets are physical gold and occasionally cash. The plumbing differs slightly. According to each fund's fact sheet dated September 30, 2026, GLD's sponsor is World Gold Trust Services, with HSBC and JPMorgan Chase as custodians. GLDM's sponsor is WGC USA Asset Management, with JPMorgan Chase as sole custodian (fact sheet as of 09/30/2026).

Share price is the visible difference. GLD traded near $381.01 this afternoon, while GLDM sat near $82.20. Each GLDM share represents a smaller piece of an ounce, which makes small, regular purchases cleaner for investors whose brokers do not offer fractional shares.

Many successful investors eventually reach the same moment. The saving is done, the portfolio is built, and the question quietly changes from how much can I grow this to how much can I take out? Get that second question wrong and decades of good investing can come apart in a handful of years.

That is exactly what The Definitive Guide to Retirement Income helps answer. It covers what your retirement could actually cost, which income sources are worth using, and the withdrawal math that decides whether the money lasts. It is free today from Fisher Investments. Read More Here ›

Liquidity is where GLD stands apart. By mid-afternoon Thursday, GLD had traded 4,367,223 shares, roughly $1.66 billion in value. GLDM had traded 2,243,741 shares, about $184 million. For a retirement saver buying a few thousand dollars at a time, both are plenty liquid.

Why a Small Fee Gap Costs Gold Holders More Than They Think

GLD charges 0.40% a year. GLDM charges 0.10%, per its September 2026 fact sheet. That 0.30 percentage point gap means $40 a year per $10,000 in GLD versus $10 in GLDM.

The fee matters more for gold than for a stock fund. Gold pays no dividend, so nothing offsets the expense. Each trust sells bullion to cover its costs, which means every share slowly represents less metal. If gold went nowhere for 20 years, a $100,000 GLD position would trail an identical GLDM stake by about $5,722 from fees alone.

Through September 30, 2026, GLDM's five-year annualized NAV return was 18.96% against GLD's 18.62%, a 0.34 point annual edge that lines up with the fee difference. On price, GLDM returned 133.92% over the five years ending today, versus 130.45% for GLD. The edge builds up gradually and compounds steadily.

Where GLD Still Holds an Edge

GLD earns its higher fee for a specific crowd. Active traders, options writers, and institutions moving large blocks benefit from GLD's heavy trading volume and established options market. Someone holding gold for a few weeks around a Fed decision pays a little piece of the 0.40% annual fee, and execution quality may matter more than the fee. Investors who run covered calls on gold also tend to use GLD's options market.

Switching Without a Tax Surprise

Taxes are the biggest hurdle. Both trusts hold physical gold, so the IRS treats long-term gains as collectibles, taxed at up to 28% rather than the standard long-term capital gains rate. Switching does not change that treatment, but selling GLD held outside a tax-sheltered account realizes whatever gain you have builds up. With GLD up 219.21% over 10 years, long-time holders may face a large bill.

A practical sequence:

  • Retirement accounts first. In an IRA or 401(k), switching triggers no tax, so the fee savings start right away.

  • Redirect new money. Some investors direct future contributions to GLDM and leave appreciated GLD lots in place.

  • Harvest underwater lots.GLD is down 3.86% year to date, so shares bought in 2026 may carry unrealized losses. Whether the wash-sale rule treats two gold trusts as substantially identical is a gray area, so document the trade carefully.

  • Run the break-even.The savings come to $30 a year per $10,000. If the tax on a highly appreciated lot would take a decade of savings to recover, the case for switching that lot weakens.

Verdict for the Buy-and-Hold Gold Saver

For a retirement investor holding gold as a long-term hedge, GLDM does the same job for a quarter of the cost, and its returns show the gap. That gives it a structural cost advantage for new money and for GLD exposure held in a tax-sheltered account. Appreciated GLD held outside a tax-sheltered account merits a lot-by-lot review before you sell. GLD's liquidity advantage remains most relevant for traders and options users. The assessment would change only if State Street cut GLD's fee or GLDM's liquidity weakened, and neither has happened.
