A Gartner warning that most neoclouds, the AI providers that rent out graphics processing unit (GPU) capacity, won't survive as independent companies is pulling the group lower, and IREN Limited( NASDAQ:IREN ) stock is among the hardest hit. IREN stock is down 5% to $28.94 this morning. Similarly, CoreWeave( NASDAQ:CRWV ) stock is falling 5% to $62.26, matching the drop in IREN shares.
Nebius Group( NASDAQ:NBIS ) stock is down 4% to $177.68, a slightly smaller decline than IREN and CoreWeave shares are posting. Broader cloud and technology funds are falling by less than that. The First Trust Cloud Computing ETF( NASDAQ:SKYY ) is down 3% to $159.92, even though CoreWeave stock ranks among its larger holdings.
Meanwhile, the Invesco QQQ Trust( NASDAQ:QQQ ) is decline 1% to $719.84, a far softer loss for large-cap tech. That gap between the two funds and IREN, CoreWeave and Nebius shares marks a repricing of the neocloud business model as a whole. Shares of IREN, CoreWeave and Nebius are trading as a single block built on the same funding assumptions.

Gartner Sees Most Neoclouds Losing Independence
Gartner's report, published yesterday, predicts that 80% of neocloud providers will cease to operate independently by the end of the decade if AI infrastructure spending keeps running at its current pace. The research firm argues that revenue from AI data centers will fall well short of what the expansion costs, and large, diversified cloud operators are better placed to absorb that shortfall than asset-light neoclouds, according to the report.
Company risk disclosures line up with that thesis, since IREN has flagged significant customer concentration and GPU and hardware supply constraints among its key risks. Nebius leans on a small group of large customers for much of its revenue, while CoreWeave carries a heavy debt load relative to its equity.
One Business Model Behind Three Selloffs
IREN builds and operates data centers and rents computing capacity to AI customers. Originally a cryptocurrency miner, IREN is converting its sites to AI cloud work and has already delivered liquid-cooled capacity to a major hyperscale customer. It also earned top-tier partner status from its main GPU supplier on that chipmaker's newest rack-scale systems.
CoreWeave rents that capacity at larger scale as a pure cloud provider, serving leading AI labs and some of the biggest names in technology. Nebius runs a comparable full-stack AI cloud platform, backed by a strategic equity investment from a leading chipmaker and long-term agreements with a large social media company.
Supporters of the group point to AI compute demand that still exceeds supply, and IREN has stated that its capacity for this year is largely sold out. Skeptics focus on the gap Gartner describes, where expansion spending runs ahead of what AI data centers bring in. The companies quietly supplying the picks and shovels for that expansion, from power to cooling to networking, are the ones we profiled in a free report on seven AI infrastructure plays that aren't chipmakers.
Contracted Capacity Is IREN's Next Test
IREN's next test is whether its contracted capacity converts to revenue fast enough to make the financing question academic, since every delivered deployment reduces the period in which IREN carries heavy spending without matching income, and each delay extends it. Steady delivery at IREN would also ease concerns about how the company pays for its next phase of growth.
Investors drawn to the long-term demand story should keep their position sizes modest, which leaves room for further swings. Anyone leaning bearish may prefer to trim their exposure until IREN shows that new capacity is turning into steady revenue.
