Investing.com -- Alcoa Corp (NYSE:AA) shares slid more than 5% on Thursday after Wall Street research firm Argus downgraded the aluminum producer, citing mounting pricing pressures and expanding global supply that threaten near-term profit margins.

Argus lowered its rating on the Pittsburgh-based metals giant to Hold from Buy, pointing to recent underperformance against broader equity benchmarks. Over the past three months, Alcoa stock has dropped 8%, trailing the S&P MidCap 400 Index's 3% decline as aluminum prices remain pinned near multimonth lows.

While acknowledging Alcoa's operational pedigree, Argus equity analyst Alexandra Yates emphasized that improving supply dynamics outside the Middle East are capping commodity prices. Unfavorable tariff conditions and expanding capacity from international competitors continue to create headwinds that impede sustainable market recovery.

The downgrade comes despite Alcoa posting solid third-quarter financial results earlier this month that topped Wall Street expectations. The company reported adjusted earnings of $1.82 per share on net sales of $3.7 billion, driven by operational improvements at key facilities such as its Pinjarra refinery in Australia.

Sequentially, however, third-quarter revenue slipped 7% as lower realized aluminum prices and reduced shipment volumes squeezed margins. Adjusted EBITDA margin narrowed by 140 basis points quarter-over-quarter to 21.3%, reflecting a softening pricing environment that management expects will carry into late 2026.

Alcoa reaffirmed its full-year operational guidance, projecting alumina shipments of 11.5 million to 11.6 million metric tons and aluminum shipments between 2.6 million and 2.8 million metric tons. Management expects higher output in the fourth quarter to be partially offset by elevated raw material costs and scheduled facility maintenance.

Despite near-term industry challenges, Argus raised its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings estimate for Alcoa to $6.80 per share from $6.55, while maintaining its 2027 forecast at $6.70 per share. The firm noted that the stock appears fairly valued near recent prices around $41, trading at 6 times forward earnings projections.

Ultimately, Argus analysts view the current valuation as balanced against broader global market volatility and competitive supply expansions. Wall Street appears content to remain on the sidelines until clear catalysts emerge to drive long-term, sustainable demand growth.
