Quick Read

  • Households directly own 42.1% of U.S. stocks, the highest since Q4 1998, raising concentration risk for SPY and VTI investors.

  • SPY's largest holding is NVDA at 7.58%, so record household stock ownership also means outsized exposure to a few technology giants.

  • Ben Snider blamed "weak consumer sentiment and elevated energy prices" as retail investors' share of U.S. trading volume dropped from 15% to about 9%.

American households directly held $52.12 trillion of U.S. corporate stock on June 30, 2026. The whole market was valued at $123.69 trillion. The latest Federal Reserve data show that households owned a 42.1% direct share, the highest since Q4 1998.

The Fed released those figures on September 11, 2026. They got renewed attention in an October 23 report from Goldman Sachs( NYSE:GS ) strategist Ben Snider, who put the household stake at about 42%.

Index funds barely responded to the renewed attention. On October 27, 2026, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust( NYSEARCA:SPY ) closed at $769.66, up 0.57%. The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF( NYSEARCA:VTI ) closed at $377.92, up 0.61%.

Households now own more of the market but trade it less. That matters if you hold a total-market fund and are close to retirement.

What the Federal Reserve Data Actually Show

The 42.1% reading is higher than every quarter of 1999, when the share ran from 41.7% to 41.9%. The reading exceeds every quarter of 2000 as well, when the share ran from 40.3% to 41.4%. Only Q4 1998 was higher, at 43.0%.

The share rose from 35.7% in Q1 2020 to 40.8% at the end of 2025 and 41.5% in Q1 2026. Direct holdings grew from $44.01 trillion in Q1 2026 to $52.12 trillion in Q2.

Households also held $21.91 trillion in stock indirectly, through pensions, life insurers and similar vehicles. Counting both, their equity holdings came to $74.03 trillion. On that broader measure, stocks made up a record 48.2% of household financial assets. That compares with 38.7% at the Q1 2000 peak and 41.0% in Q4 2021.

Q3 data come next. They are due December 10, 2026.

What It Means for SPY and VTI Holders

SPY has $804.37 billion in assets and a 52-week range of $629.28 to $781.62. As of March 17, 2026, its largest holding was NVIDIA( NASDAQ:NVDA ) at 7.58%. That means a record household stake in stocks is also a heavy stake in a few technology giants.

VTI has $691.08 billion in assets and a 52-week range of $310.40 to $385.12. Unlike SPY, it also holds the small and mid-size companies that the S&P 500 leaves out.

Snider said retail trading volumes have fallen about 20% since mid-summer and more than 40% since late 2025. Retail investors' share of U.S. stock trading volume dropped to about 9% from 15%. He blamed "weak consumer sentiment and elevated energy prices."

Holdings kept rising anyway, because payroll deductions buy stocks no matter how people feel. At one large 401(k) provider, 63% of workers held all their savings in a target-date fund at the end of 2025. Goldman estimates households bought $840 billion of U.S. stocks in the first half of 2026.

Reality Check on Crowding Risk

Goldman sees these flows as support for its S&P 500 targets of 8,000 by year-end and 8,700 over 12 months. But the last time households owned this much stock directly, the dot-com crash followed.

Stocks now make up a record share of household portfolios. A steep drop early in retirement can force you to sell at low prices, which is called sequence-of-returns risk.

The flow data matter for VTI holders. Households are adding to their stock holdings while retail trading declines. That points to automatic retirement saving, and that kind of buying tends to continue through weak markets.

VTI also differs from SPY in its range. Its small and mid-size companies reduce the heavy concentration in the largest stocks that dominate the S&P 500 fund.

Investors whose stock allocation has risen above their plan may want to review whether rebalancing into bonds or cash fits their goals.

The next test is the December 10 release. A direct share above 43.0% with retail volume still near 9% would confirm steady buying through retirement accounts. If retail trading rebounds at the same time, that would signal speculation returning and raise the concentration risk discussed above.
