Audi Targets 600,000 China Deliveries As Dual-Brand Strategy Expands

Audi AG ( AUDVF ) is pressing ahead with its China reset, doubling down on a dual-brand strategy while holding firm to its target of delivering more than 600,000 vehicles this year. The shift comes as the German automaker navigates a market where its historical dominance has softened, prompting a more segmented approach to demand. By launching the separate AUDI brand with SAIC Motor Corp. roughly three years ago, management is attempting to broaden its reach, and Chief Executive Officer Gernot Dollner indicated he is very happy with the early performance of the E5 sportback. The initial rollout could suggest limited overlap between legacy Audi buyers and the newer, younger customer base the company is targeting.

That positioning reflects a deliberate effort to rebuild relevance in the world's largest auto market, where Audi once accounted for more than two-thirds of cars used by Chinese bureaucrats. The dual-track strategy keeps the traditional four-ring brand intact while introducing a parallel lineup aimed at tech-focused consumers, with the E7X unveiled at the Beijing auto show and a third model planned within a year. Even so, Dollner signaled that the outcome of this approach may take two to three years to fully assess, particularly as the electric-vehicle segment has seen softer growth following the phaseout of some incentives.

At the same time, Audi is continuing to invest in its internal-combustion portfolio, integrating features such as driver-assistance systems from Huawei Technologies Co. into higher-end A6L variants while keeping entry-level trims more basic. That tiered approach contrasts with local competitors that often bundle similar technology as standard, but Audi appears to be betting that pricing pressure in the EV market could stabilize and that a portion of buyers may remain with gasoline-powered vehicles. Looking further out, management is aiming to bring the core Audi brand deeper into the new energy vehicle segment, a transition that could shape its longer-term positioning in China.
