Bank Of China (SEHK:3988) Q3 Earnings Highlight Margin Strength And Credit Risk

Bank of China walked into this Q3 2026 release with its Hong Kong listed shares at HK$6.145, after a solid 7 day run and a stronger 90 day gain. The headline today is earnings power. Net income excluding extra items reached RMB 63,888m on revenue of RMB 141,965m, with profitability still a key support for the investment case.

Short term traders may focus on the recent share price drift. Longer term investors will likely care more about the improving net profit margin story and how that interacts with a valuation that screens cheaply against modeled fair value and its own earnings profile.

Bank of China's Fee And AI Milestones Under Scrutiny

Supporters argue that Bank of China is already turning its global reach and technology push into durable, higher quality earnings streams.

"Bullish analysts expect Bank of China to keep building on its globalization, fee-based businesses and AI-led digital finance so that overseas profit contribution and non-interest income remain key earnings drivers over the coming years."

The latest figures give that view some real anchors. Overseas profit share is about 27%, non interest income is RMB 120.4b and roughly one third of total income, and fee lines like custody and bond underwriting show double digit volume growth. AI Plus deployment already spans thousands of use cases. This coincides with a better cost to income ratio and a higher net profit margin.

Bank of China's Bad Debt Fears Meet Hard Numbers

Bearish investors worry that Bank of China is quietly sitting on a credit clean up that will eat into future earnings quality.

"Although Bank of China highlights a low reported non performing loan ratio and high provision coverage, the sector wide build up of an estimated US$3 trillion in hidden bad debt suggests that any future recognition of these risks could lift credit costs and reduce net margins and earnings."

The latest print does not show that stress yet. The reported non performing loan ratio is 1.22%, newly incurred bad loans declined and provision coverage of about 285% looks robust. Net interest income grew and group net profit rose roughly 5%. The concern is timing. None of these figures proves that system wide hidden losses will stay buried.

Hunt For Quiet Earnings Power

Bank of China just reminded investors how much story can sit within a single quarterly print. The real opportunity could be spotting stocks that look mispriced before the market closes any perceived gap.

  • Company 1 - 34% below our estimate - uses higher yielding consumer and SME loans plus a growing payments ecosystem to shift its funding mix toward cheaper, stickier deposits.

  • Company 2 - 21% below our estimate - turns strong equipment order books in areas like semiconductors into expanding service and aftermarket contracts that can steadily raise recurring revenue.

  • Company 3 - 37% below our estimate - replaces traditional blast furnaces with new electric processes to win higher margin, lower carbon steel contracts from industrial and infrastructure customers.

Those are three of them. See the full list of 194 companies trading below our fair value estimates →
