What Investors Overlooked Before Afya Slid

Trade Afya on Coinbase

If the Afya and Yduqs merger agreement grabbed your attention this year, you were not alone in wondering what it might mean for long term holders. Investors who held Afya from the start of the year are down 25.7%, including dividends. That result reflects every twist between January optimism and October merger headlines, not just one announcement. The real question is whether the clues available at the start made this outcome a surprise worth learning from.

The Two Afya Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$15.41 at the start, and Afya investors were essentially choosing between a powerful health education boom and a slower, technology disrupted future.

On the upbeat side, the bull Narrative pointed to a Fair Value of US$25.04, a price implied by expectations of strong demand from Brazil's physician shortage and demographic trends supporting sustained tuition and margin strength.

The bear Narrative instead suggested a Fair Value of US$14.09 and warned that rapid growth of AI powered and online medical education could erode Afya's traditional campus based demand.

What The Afya Evidence Actually Tested

The binding Afya and Yduqs merger agreement, with Afya set to fold into Yduqs and list only on B3, gave more weight to the cautious case that consolidation might matter more than pure growth. Revenue and net income both rose between Q2 2025 and Q2 2026, and net margin moved from 18.7% to 20.3%, so the evidence cut both ways.

The key assumption was whether Afya could compound as a standalone medical education platform. For any similar stock, check whether later corporate actions align with that original independence story or quietly replace it.

What Afya's Drop Now Asks You To Believe

Afya trades at US$10.64 today, after a 25.7% loss from the start of the year. The selected Narrative argues that its Fair Value sits above the current price. The future may hinge more on merger scale and pricing power than on Afya as a standalone growth story.

The central issue is execution. For the decline to look like an opportunity rather than a warning, a buyer now would need to believe Afya and Yduqs can actually deliver the planned cost synergies without losing pricing power in premium medical education.

"The planned merger between Afya and Yduqs, with an expected BRL 2.0b to 2.2b in cost synergies and a combined revenue base of about BRL 9.5b, could materially increase scale and operating efficiency, which would support higher net margins and earnings over time."
