Itron (ITRI) Stock Jumps As Q3 Earnings Showcase Margin Strength

Trade Itron on Coinbase

Itron shares came into this print with a flat three month return and just a modest gain over the past month. Then Q3 2026 landed and the stock jumped 7.8% to US$94.55 as traders reacted to a clean earnings beat.

The real story sits in profitability. Management turned US$599.3 million of quarterly revenue into US$71.4 million of net income and record non GAAP earnings power, a step up that matters far more for long term holders than today's pop alone.

Itron bull story: backlog and software mix on trial

Supporters argue that Itron's long term edge rests on deepening its role as the intelligence layer and scaling recurring software and services.

"Ongoing industry wide digitalization and utility interest in grid edge intelligence, seen in expanding deployments of distributed intelligence enabled endpoints and recent launches such as Itron Riva IEC meters and IEE Cloud AI, supports further adoption of Outcomes offerings and can lift recurring software and services revenue as a share of total revenue."

Q3 gives that view real footing. Grid Edge Intelligence endpoints reached more than 19.4 million, ARR hit about US$423 million and Outcomes plus Resiliency Solutions now exceed 25% of backlog. Record 41.3% adjusted gross margin and quarterly high adjusted EBITDA of US$115 million show the higher margin mix is flowing through.

Itron bear story: project timing and margin durability checked

Skeptics worry that slow moving utility programs and mix driven margins could unwind the recent earnings progress.

"Customers and regulators are slowing project deployments and delaying decisions due to increased capital budget pressures, affordability concerns and regulatory scrutiny, and this is visible in Itron reporting that certain large Networked Solutions programs have been spread over longer time frames and that full year 2025 revenue fell 3% versus 2024 after the catch up period ended, which could continue to restrain revenue growth and keep earnings sensitive to deployment timing."

Q3 results soften that concern but do not erase it. Revenue landed at US$599 million, right at the top of outlook, while bookings grew 27% and backlog reached US$4.3b, aided by Networked Solutions. Yet management still flags lumpy bookings and regulatory timing, so the deployment risk remains live even as raised 2026 EPS guidance and a 7.8% share price jump show investors rewarding current execution.

Hunt For Quiet Fundamental Shifts

Itron just showed how a single quarter can reset expectations for a complex business. The real opportunity could be spotting solid companies that look mispriced before the crowd closes the gap.

  • Company 1 - 15% below our estimate - uses specialty contractors to capture hyperscale data center buildouts, while rising working capital and concentrated ownership reshape the risk profile.

  • Company 2 - 27% below our estimate - turns grid modernization, aerospace programs and diagnostic test demand into higher margin engineered systems as a new acquisition gets integrated.

  • Company 3 - 23% below our estimate - expands surgical robotics and Smart Care offerings into more procedures while reworking factories and supply chains to support higher margin medical equipment.
