Lockheed Martin: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Trade LMT on Coinbase

On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Lockheed Martin(NYSE:LMT) raised its full-year sales guidance after sales grew 11% year over year to $20.7 billion. Multiyear government defense commitments provide durable revenue visibility that insulates the business from short-term budget shifts.

Three takeaways from management's remarks explain how this execution secures future growth.

1. Record Backlog Reaches $292 Billion as Demand Scales

The defense contractor expanded its backlog, or the total value of signed contracts waiting to be fulfilled, to $292 billion. Book-to-bill, the ratio of new orders received to products delivered, reached 4x, showing that demand for military hardware is outpacing current factory output.

We ended the quarter with a record backlog of $292 billion, up $113 billion when compared to the third quarter of 2025, and a book-to-bill of 4x.

2. Long-Term F-35 Agreement Guarantees Decade-Long Production Stability

A landmark framework agreement for the F-35, the company's main stealth fighter aircraft, secures delivery schedules for 850 jets to the U.S. military over 10 years. This multiyear arrangement gives suppliers the confidence to invest in automated production without fear of unexpected budget cuts.

This agreement solidifies the path to 850 U.S. aircraft over a 10-year span, which will be further augmented by sales to our allies, achieving a total production at 156 aircraft per year for 10 years.
-- Jim Taiclet, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

3. Munitions Expansion Receives $8 Billion Capital Commitment Through 2030

To meet surging global demand for missile defense, Lockheed Martin is expanding 20 manufacturing facilities and hiring 3,000 workers at Missiles and Fire Control (MFC), its precision weapons unit. Long-term customer contracts protect these capital investments against cash flow risk.

All of this is part of more than the $8 billion investment we are making through 2030 to modernize more than 20 facilities, expand our supply chain, and grow our workforce.
-- Jim Taiclet, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Production momentum across all four business segments is converting unprecedented order volume into steady cash flow. Long-term multiyear contracts, deep supply-chain integration, and specialized missile manufacturing facilities give the company an operational moat that rivals can't easily replicate as management prioritizes execution and pricing discipline.

A backlog of this size and duration gives us substantial visibility into our future performance, with much of next year's work already under contract and in progress.
-- Evan Scott, Chief Financial Officer

Sustained global defense demand positions the business to compound value well into the future.

Our focus remains on execution at Lockheed Martin, delivering advanced, reliable capabilities at the speed and scales needed.
-- Jim Taiclet, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer
