PUMA (XTRA:PUM) Q3 Results Contrast A Lingering Profit Squeeze

PUMA closed at €26.62 on Friday, capping a 30‑day gain of about 20% just as it dropped Q3 2026 earnings that still show the group in the red. The stock has been trading as if a clean earnings recovery is around the corner. The report instead highlights a company working through a profit squeeze.

Revenue for the quarter came in at €1,776.2m with a basic loss per share of €0.37 and net income excluding extra items also in loss territory. For anyone looking beyond today's price move, the main focus is how long this margin pressure can persist before the multi‑year reset has a material impact on results.

Puma's reset starts to show through margins

The bullish argument is that PUMA's channel mix and DTC push can eventually translate into better quality earnings, not just cleaner shelves.

"The reset away from mass merchants, tighter wholesale segmentation and a higher mix of direct to consumer sales point to a shift toward higher quality revenue, which can support gross margin and EBIT once the clean up phase is complete."

Q3 shows pieces of that thesis working. DTC share moved above 33%, e commerce rose 7.8%, and gross margin reached 49.5%, helped by mix and lower sourcing. Yet EBIT was still a small adjusted profit and a reported loss, with higher OpEx offsetting product and channel gains.

Execution risk and China concerns stay on the table

The bear case focuses on whether PUMA's heavy transformation load and China exposure drag out the recovery and keep earnings weak.

"The business is in the middle of a 3 year transformation, including a new operating model, a European restructuring, range reductions that will only fully show by spring or summer 2027 and continued OpEx close to €3.5b. Execution risk around organizational changes, leadership additions and DTC expansion could delay the shift to higher quality revenue and keep net margins and EBIT under pressure."

Latest numbers lean toward that caution. Q3 OpEx rose 6.7% and the OpEx ratio climbed above 50%. Reported EBIT stayed in loss territory and full year 2026 guidance still points to an €80m to €130m operating loss, even as inventories and net debt improve.

Hunt For Mispriced Earnings Power

PUMA's Q3 earnings story shows sentiment can shift faster than reported performance. The real opportunity is identifying stocks that appear undervalued before improving fundamentals are fully reflected in valuations.

  • Company 1 - 35% below our estimate - sells high margin AI computing racks to data center customers scaling power hungry workloads.

  • Company 2 - 42% below our estimate - advances a late stage pipeline replacing expiring drugs with cardiometabolic and rare disease treatments.

  • Company 3 - 44% below our estimate - builds higher acuity hospitals and clinics that support an AI enabled operating model targeting stronger margins.
