(Bloomberg) -- SK Hynix Inc. ( SKHY ) plans to return about 80% of the gains from selling down its stake in Japan's Kioxia Holdings Corp. to shareholders through a special dividend of about 16 trillion won ($12 billion), the DongA Ilbo newspaper reported.

The South Korean chipmaker is expected to announce the payout when it reports third-quarter earnings on Oct. 28, the newspaper said Monday, citing unidentified investment banking sources.
SK Hynix is estimated to have generated about 20 trillion won in gains from the sale of its Kioxia investment during the first and second quarters, according to the report.

A spokesperson for SK Hynix declined to comment.
In 2018, a Bain-led group including SK Hynix Inc. bought Toshiba Corp.'s former memory operations for $18 billion. The investment gave SK Hynix indirect exposure to one of its biggest rivals in NAND flash memory and surged in value following Kioxia's Tokyo listing in 2024 and subsequent rally.
Bain Capital told Bloomberg News earlier this year that it sold its entire stake in flash memory chipmaker Kioxia. The South Korean company did not disclose the size of its one-off gain when it exited the investment as part of Bain's disposal.
SK Hynix holds Kioxia bonds that can be converted into substantially all of the voting rights of an investment vehicle that owns 14% of Kioxia.
