Quick Read

  • Visa CFO Chris Suh reported U.S. payments volume grew 10%, with credit up 11% and no signs of lower-income consumers weakening.

  • Mastercard reports October 29 as an independent consumer check; U.S. volume slowing there would weaken the bullish case for Visa stock.

  • Visa raised its quarterly dividend 16% to $0.78 and holds $24.4 billion in remaining buyback authorization to support the share price.

"We did not see signs of the lower spend consumer weakening in our volumes." Chief financial officer Chris Suh said that on the fiscal fourth-quarter call after the close on October 27, 2026, and the comment offered the clearest read on the U.S. consumer from the call.

Visa( NYSE:V ) sees a very large share of U.S. card spending. Suh said U.S. payments volume grew 10% in the quarter ended September 30, about the same rate as the prior quarter.

Investors sold Visa stock anyway, as Visa shares closed at $401.86 and fell to $397.25 after hours, down 1.15%. Meanwhile, Mastercard( NYSE:MA ) rose 0.35% to $612.00. For investors who own Visa for steady compounding, the selloff likely reflects a market that had already priced in a steady consumer.

What Visa's Network Shows About U.S. Shoppers

Suh said "both U.S. discretionary and non-discretionary spend growth remained strong," and that growth across spend bands stayed consistent, "with the highest spend band continuing to grow the fastest."

Suh put U.S. credit growth at 11%, while debit grew 9%. Credit growing faster than debit can point to confidence, since people put bigger purchases on cards when they feel secure. It can also mean households are borrowing more, and the volume figures can't tell those two apart.

Chief executive Ryan McInerney credited jobs: "Anyone in this country who wants a job, for the most part, has a job." The Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index rose 7.5 points to 91.7 in October.

October Spending Is Holding, With Limits

Suh said U.S. payments volume through October 21 rose 10%, with credit up 11% and debit up 9%. Suh also said cross-border volume outside Europe grew 15%.

That covers only three weeks. Some of the summer gain came from the World Cup, as host cities kept seeing an "influx of FIFA fans." Management expects fiscal first-quarter revenue growth to come in just under a point below the fourth quarter, mostly because that FIFA revenue goes away.

McInerney said uncertainty remains high. On how long the strength will last, he said: "it's just too hard to tell."

Why Visa Shares Fell After a Beat

Adjusted EPS of $3.48 beat the Wall Street analyst consensus of $3.44 by only about 1%. Net revenue rose 13% to $12.1 billion, close to the Wall Street analyst consensus of roughly $12.09 billion.

Guidance came only as ranges in words. Visa expects fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS growth "in the low double digits to low teens," and that assumes the economy stays about where it is today. Visa stock had gained 9.39% over the past month and was trading near its $414.60 52-week high, so a narrow beat left little room for upside.

Buybacks and a Dividend Raise Support the Price

Visa raised its quarterly dividend 16% to $0.78, payable December 1, 2026. It bought back about 11 million shares in the quarter at an average price of $369.12, and $24.4 billion of its buyback authorization remains.

What Visa's Results Signal for Investors Before Mastercard Reports

McInerney cited record net revenue of $46 billion, and the October data shows that strength continuing into the new fiscal year. The after-hours drop reflects high expectations going in. The core business remained steady because spending held up across income levels, and the company paid more back to shareholders.

Mastercard, the closest peer, is up 7.51% year to date, against Visa's 15.27%. Visa has already published its October data and put its dividend raise in place, while Mastercard has yet to report.

Mastercard reports before the open on October 29, 2026, and that report will be a separate check on the consumer. If Mastercard shows U.S. volume slowing, or Visa falls below its $369.12 average buyback price, the bullish case for Visa gets weaker.
