Should You Be Adding Suncorp Group (ASX:SUN) To Your Watchlist Today?

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Suncorp Group( ASX:SUN ), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

Suncorp Group's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so you'd expect share price to follow earnings per share (EPS) outcomes eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Shareholders will be happy to know that Suncorp Group's EPS has grown 32% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be beaming.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Our analysis has highlighted that Suncorp Group's revenue from operations did not account for all of their revenue in the previous 12 months, so our analysis of its margins might not accurately reflect the underlying business. The good news is that Suncorp Group is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 4.3 percentage points to 15%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Suncorp Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Investors are always searching for a vote of confidence in the companies they hold and insider buying is one of the key indicators for optimism on the market. Any way you look at it Suncorp Group shareholders can gain quiet confidence from the fact that insiders shelled out AU$529k to buy stock, over the last year. And when you consider that there was no insider selling, you can understand why shareholders might believe that there are brighter days ahead. We also note that it was the Independent Non Executive Director, Ian Hammond, who made the biggest single acquisition, paying AU$200k for shares at about AU$19.07 each.

Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Suncorp Group is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. To be specific, they have AU$33m worth of shares. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard.
