Robinhood (NASDAQ: HOOD) is steadily expanding its fintech reach despite market hiccups.

Bloomberg reported last week that the U.S. federal government is considering Robinhood for a key role in managing the proposed " Trump accounts, " savings programs for millions of children.

Separately, Robinhood is reportedly pursuing participation in the upcoming SpaceX IPO, exploring ways to offer retail investors access through its IPO Access platform.

But despite these developments, analysts are warning that short-term challenges could weigh on its stock.

Analysts warn of new risks for Robinhood

Piper Sandler has warned that Robinhood could face several near-term challenges, even as it remains bullish on the company's long-term prospects.

In a note to clients, the brokerage reiterated its Overweight rating and $155 price target but cautioned about new risks.

This included:

  • Slowing cryptocurrency trading volumes,

  • The end of the football season weighing on prediction market revenue, and

  • uncertainty around retail trading momentum.

Piper Sandler also cited Robinhood's high beta of 2.45, making the stock more volatile than the broader market.

A beta measures how much a stock's price moves compared to the broader market (usually the S&P 500). A beta of 1.0 means the stock moves in line with the market.

A beta above 1.0 means it's more volatile; it tends to rise more when the market goes up and fall more when the market drops. A beta below 1.0 means it's less volatile and moves less than the market.

Stock slides 40% from October highs

Robinhood shares have fallen about 40% since peaking at $152.46 in October, including a 20% drop in January.

At press time, it was down at $89.43, having dropped 10.09% lower overnight.

The decline has been amplified by broader market weakness and a roughly 10% year-to-date slide in Bitcoin prices, which tends to impact Robinhood's crypto trading revenue.

Despite the pullback, Piper Sandler said Robinhood remains one of the strongest long-term plays on the growth of retail investing, describing it as the fintech platform "closest to achieving super app status."
