For years, Wikipedia has been the go-to source for quick and detailed knowledge on nearly any topic — from types of fruit to defining moments in history. But a new AI-powered contender is looking to challenge that dominance.
Elon Musk 's xAI has launched Grokipedia, a free, open-source online encyclopedia created by its Grok AI model. The platform went live on Oct. 27, with early users noting a few technical issues.
In a post on X on the same day, Musk said, "Grokipedia.com is fully open source, so anyone can use it for anything at no cost."
How is Grok built
In 2019, Elon Musk criticized his own Wikipedia page on X, then Twitter, saying it was a "war zone with a zillion edits."
Years later, on Sept. 30 this year, the Tesla founder revealed on X that his team at xAI was building something that would be a "massive improvement over Wikipedia."
"Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe," he wrote on Sept. 30.
Similar to Wikipedia, Grokipedia has a landing page that features a search bar on a dark background. On top, it reads "Grokipedia v0.1."
Once a topic is entered, it shows a list of related search queries. Once the desired query is selected, the user lands on a page that looks similar to a Wikipedia page.
In a separate post on X, Musk described the open-source nature of Grokipedia, adding that users will be able to ask Grok to add, modify, or delete articles, and it will either take the action or tell the user it won't and why.

The jury is out
Crypto traders on X are divided. While some highlight that it might be the best tool to research crypto, some are raising concerns about Grok's fact-checking methods, which are deemed incorrect.
"So, where does Grok 'fact check' the data then? With the same woke sources that it was using before?" a user by the name Colin Talks Crypto wrote.
The buzz around Grokipedia began around September when Musk revealed the plans. Since then, unofficial Grokipedia tokens have begun circulating. Many crypto users are raising alarms about potential crypto hacks through some of these tokens.
Billionaire and VC Chamath Palihapitiya called Grokipedia to be "almost equal to Wikipedia already" and added that it will be "obviously better than Wikipedia within a year."
