MicroStrategy director buys MSTR dip after years of selling

Trade MSTR on Coinbase

Strategy (Nasdaq: MSTR), earlier known as MicroStrategy, director Carl Rickertsen has purchased 5,000 MSTR shares, a Jan. 12 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed.

Rickertsen acquired $779,395 worth of MSTR shares at a price of $155.879 a share. Code P in the filing indicates he made an actual purchase on an open or private market.

As per Insider Screener , it is Rickertsen's first purchase of MSTR shares after July 13, 2022, when he had bought 4,000 shares worth $608,000.

Since then, he had only sold MSTR shares over the last few years except for the latest transaction.

Rickertsen dip buys MSTR shares after MSCI escape

Insider buying is a standard market practice in which a company executive or a major shareholder legally purchases shares of their own company in the open market.

These transactions are required to be disclosed to the SEC, which publicly reports the stock purchase price, number of shares, and time when the executive made the sale.

Rickertsen's latest purchase of MSTR shares comes only days after the world's leading Bitcoin (BTC) treasury company escaped getting delisted from its indices by MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International) for some time.

Since the company presents itself as the ultimate financial instrument to gain BTC exposure, its stock performance is tied to that of the cryptocurrency.

Michael Saylor, co-founder and executive chairman of MicroStrategy Inc., during The White House Digital Assets Summit in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington, DC, US, on Friday, March 7, 2025.

When BTC rallied, the MSTR stock rallied. But when BTC dipped, the MSTR stock crashed.

While BTC is down 15% over the last three months, MSTR is down more than 40% during the same period.

This got traditional players like MSCI worried and it began to consider excluding crypto treasuries with more than 50% of their balance sheet allocated to cryptocurrencies from its indices.

Though MSCI has delayed the delisting for now, the 50% criterion still holds when it considers the proposal next.

Recently, Clear Street analyst Brian Dobson also  slashed the price target on MSTR from $443 to $268.

However, he reiterated a "Buy" rating and maintained that Strategy continues to remain "a differentiated and compelling vehicle for leveraged Bitcoin exposure on a per-share basis, net of dilution."

The Michael Saylor-led firm holds 687,410 BTC as of Jan. 11.

The MSTR stock was trading at $172.40 at press time, up more than 6% in a day.
