Tesla ( TSLA , Financials ) and Syrah Resources have agreed to extend the deadline to address an alleged default tied to their graphite supply contract, pushing the date to Jan. 16, 2026. It marks the second extension since September as the parties work through disagreements over material qualification from Syrah's Vidalia plant in Louisiana.

Syrah said Tesla issued a default notice in July after the automaker claimed the miner failed to deliver conforming active anode material samples for electric-vehicle battery production. Syrah maintains it is not in default but agreed to the new deadline while continuing to stabilize its U.S. operations.

The 2021 supply agreement calls for 8,000 metric tons of graphite anode material over four years. Vidalia remains the only large-scale, vertically integrated anode material facility outside China, making the qualification process important for U.S. supply chain diversification efforts.

Syrah said Tesla may terminate the offtake agreement if the plant does not achieve final qualification by Feb. 9, 2026. Tesla has not commented publicly on the extension.

Separately, Syrah said a subsidiary received $8.5 million under its $150 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation to support its Balama operations in Mozambique, which faced disruptions last year during nationwide protests.
