Donald Trump Jr.'s venture capital fund, 1789 Capital, has invested in the world's largest prediction market, Polymarket , as per the latest report by Axios.
Launched in 2020, Polymarket lets traders place bets on a number of future events, such as election results, the Fed's decisions, box office results, crypto prices, etc., using cryptocurrency. Peter Thiel's Founders Fund recently valued the prediction market upwards of $1 billion.
1789 Capital, which Trump Jr. joined as a partner last year following his father Donald Trump's re-election as the U.S. president, has invested "double-digit" millions of dollars into Polymarket, Axios reported. Trump Jr. will also join Polymarket's advisory board.
Axios cited a source to report that 1789 Capital founder Omeed Malik and Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan have been discussing the deal for the last 18 months, but the VC fund waited until there was a clear legal path for the prediction market's entry into the U.S. market.
In 2022, the company was charged with offering illegal event-based binary options to U.S. users and operating as an unregistered market maker. It agreed to pay a $1.4 million fine and restrict the platform's access to American users.
As reported earlier , the Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) informed Polymarket in July that federal investigations into the market have been officially shut down. The development, along with its acquisition of the derivatives exchange QCX, could open the U.S. market for Polymarket.
Notably, Trump Jr. joined Kalshi, Polymarket's biggest rival, as a strategic advisor in January.
