On a per-share basis, the Silver Spring, Maryland-based company said it had profit of $6.27.
The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $4.01 per share.
The drugmaker posted revenue of $445.5 million in the period, also beating Street forecasts. Six analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $430.9 million.
United Therapeutics shares have fallen 17 percent since the beginning of the year. The stock has risen slightly more than 6 percent in the last 12 months.
