LumentumLITE shares have surged 135% year to date (YTD), outperforming the broader Zacks Computer and Technology sector's return of 16.5%. The outperformance reflects investor optimism about the company's expanding role in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, accelerating demand for optical connectivity and improving profitability. Strong hyperscaler spending, growing adoption of 1.6T optical transceivers, optical circuit switches (OCS) and next-generation laser technologies are strengthening Lumentum's growth prospects.
These factors have helped LITE shares outperform peers, including Cisco SystemsCSCO, BroadcomAVGO, and CoherentCOHR YTD. Shares of Coherent and Cisco have returned 27.8% and 45.3%, respectively, while Broadcom shares have dropped 1.1%. Despite robust demand, LITE faces challenges in expanding manufacturing capacity sufficiently to meet customer requirements. Apart from stiff competition, LITE's dependence on a limited number of major customers exposes its business to changes in purchasing patterns and capital spending priorities. So, what should investors do with the LITE stock? Let's find out.

LITE Faces Multiple Challenges
Lumentum faces challenges in expanding manufacturing capacity sufficiently to meet customer requirements. Tight availability of laser components and other materials could restrict shipments and delay revenue realization. The company is expanding ultra-high-power laser production across its San Jose, U.K. and Greensboro facilities.
The company suffers from customer concentration. LITE's dependence on a limited number of major customers exposes its business to changes in purchasing patterns and capital spending priorities. Lumentum's two largest end customers accounted for 26.6% and 15% of fiscal 2026 revenues, respectively, representing a combined 41.6%. Moreover, the company's expanding OCS business currently depends heavily on one major customer.
Lumentum faces competition from established optical technology suppliers, including Coherent, Broadcom, InnoLight and Eoptolink. Additionally, the shift toward silicon photonics presents challenges for Lumentum's EML business.
Can Strong AI Opportunity Aid LITE's Prospects?
Lumentum is benefiting from increasing investments in AI data centers, which require high-bandwidth, low-latency optical connectivity. The transition from copper-based connections to optical technologies is creating opportunities across scale-out, scale-across and scale-up networking architectures. Increasing adoption of AI accelerators and larger computing clusters is driving demand for Lumentum's lasers, optical components and transceivers.
The company is benefiting from accelerating adoption of next-generation 800G and 1.6T optical transceivers as hyperscalers upgrade their AI networking infrastructure. Lumentum achieved record 800G shipments and initiated production shipments of 1.6T transceivers during the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. Lumentum expects the adoption of 1.6T transceivers to accelerate through calendar 2027, supported by deployments of custom AI clusters among leading hyperscale customers.
Lumentum's OCS business represents a significant growth opportunity as hyperscalers seek energy-efficient networking solutions. OCS technology enables dynamic traffic routing while reducing power consumption and optical signal losses compared with conventional electrical switching. OCS shipments doubled sequentially in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026, while the company's first-quarter outlook included its first quarter of more than $100 million in OCS revenues.
LITE's 2027 Earnings Estimate Revision Shows Rising Trend
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for fiscal 2027 earnings is pegged at $21.40 per share, up 0.5% over the past 30 days, suggesting 146.8% growth from the fiscal 2026 reported figure.

The consensus mark for first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings is pegged at $4.22 per share, unchanged over the past 30 days and indicating 283.64% growth from the figure reported in the year-ago quarter.
Conclusion
Lumentum's strong exposure to AI infrastructure, accelerating adoption of 1.6T optical transceivers and expanding OCS opportunities bode well for its long-term growth prospects. Upward earnings estimate revisions further reinforce optimism. However, the stock's premium valuation, customer concentration, intense competition and manufacturing capacity constraints warrant caution. Following the sharp YTD rally, much of the growth potential appears priced in, limiting near-term upside. Hence, investors may consider holding LITE shares at current levels rather than chasing the rally, while monitoring execution and profitability improvements.
